This is one of the most tastefully beautiful hotels I've ever seen. Set in the heart of historic Stone Town, this building has been completely renovated with grace and modern Italian style while still being true to the Arab and African influences that make Zanzibar such a fascinating place. Amazing. Rashana and Renaulto, the Italian couple who manage the hotel, are always present, always have a recommendation for a restaurant or outing, and are attentive to the smallest details. We arrived in the middle of the night to find a warm welcome from the front desk attendant and a welcome fruit plate waiting for us in our room. The staff are courteous, helpful and kind, even helping to make arrangements for travel to other hotels. There can't be many places to better enjoy breakfast or a cocktail while enjoying watching ships sail in and out of port and the sunrise or set over the Indian Ocean than the romantic rooftop restaurant. The dinner menu didn't seem to take true advantage of the local culinary abundance, but the dishes they make are good, and there are plenty of other options within an easy walk of the hotel.

Wow, this hotel is one of the best hotels ever seen in my entire life of travelling. My wife and I stayed couple of days. It was like a palace: vast, light and airy, and furnished with impeccable taste. Renato the general manager was helpful, friendly and made the difference. We had a huge room with a fantastic sea view and the breakfast on the terrace overlooking stone town. I cannot recommend this hotel enough. Stunning.

We spent only one night at Mashakiri, on the way to Coastal resorts. If we went back we would definitely send more night. Rooms and common spaces with a 'soul', each space is individually designed and has a mixture of Italian and middle-eastern touch that makes it unique. The Italian management is always present and extremely helpful. Unfortunately we had a delicate health emergency and the managers made themselves available both in the late evening and the following day to find an appropriate referral health centre. They were genuinly worried for us and that made us feel in good hands through our stay. Breakfast is delicious, on top of the terrace with a wonderful view of the sea and the Clock tower. The Italian/Tuscan touch in the cuisine (Olive oil, handmade focaccia, etc) is top quality. Thanks again to the management for their helpfulnees and for looking after us in a very delicate moment. We will definitely come back!

Beautiful place and welcoming memorable.
This is one of the few hotels we stayed where kindness, class and attention to detail are a set harmonious and pleasant.
The rooms are very nice and spacious( stayed in # 15) and the staff is incredibly attentive and discrete.
We dined by candlelights on the silent and romantic terrace, food was delicious.
Everything was perfect, the scent of jasmine in the rooms, the smile of every member of staff we met, fresh fruit upon our arrival.....Merci for the unforgettable stay!

From the moment we walked in the front doors, until we departed, 3 days later, every detail was perfect. The entire staff were extremely friendly and accommodating, our rooms (3) were all different and beautiful, with everything provided. We had amazing meals and they catered to our dietary preferences. The location worked very well for access to anywhere in Stone Town. The architecture is truly beautiful and the history of the hotel, as was explained by Farooq, manager, during our guided tour, helped us to appreciate it even more. We couldn't have been happier as we began a 2 week odyssey in Tanzania. Our dates were March 21-24, 2013.

Room Tip: All rooms are different, so suggest your preferences. Perhaps request to face the ocean.

We stayed for two nights at Mashariki at the end of March. The pictures online are spot on in depicting the understated elegance and timeless grace of this property. The Arab-influenced architecture is unique and makes for a truly one of a kind hotel stay.

I debated between staying at Mashariki and Emerson, especially as Emerson is more affordable (and also highly rated on TripAdvisor). I'm quite happy we decided to stay at Mashariki. We did have dinner at Emerson one evening, which I would very highly recommend, and looked around in many rooms. While Emerson is also beautiful, I think Mashariki's beauty translates into a more comfortable stay. Emerson is graced with a beautiful internal wooden staircase that creaks at every step; colors and hues of Zanzibar abound at every turn. By contrast, Mashariki's levels are interlocked with MC Escher-like maze of staircases, all made of the same beautiful white-washed concrete. You will never stay in another place like Mashariki.

The food on the rooftop restaurant is delicious. The food is more simply prepared than at Emerson's. Both are truly worthwhile.

The location of the hotel can't be beat. It is across the street from the nightly Forodhani Gardens outdoor market. Mashariki is an excellent point from which to explore the seemingly endless narrow alleyways of Stone Town.

We booked a Darajani room, but were upgraded to a Forodhani room (# 17). The room had immensely high ceilings, and loads of architectural details that one hopes to incorporate into one's own home. The staff also did a nice job of making sure the room was chilled each time we entered, which was a small, but unforgettable, luxury.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Stone Town, Zanzibar, exotic, magic and still evokes its incredible past of sultans, missionaries, traders, adventurers and explorers. These magical islands off the Swahili East African Coast have been a real magnet since time immemorial and all those who passed by left their marks. Stone Town, on the Unguja Island, for a certain period of time was even the capital of the Omani Empire. Everywhere you can still see and feel the cultural and architectural fusions echoing Persian, Arabian, Indian, Colonial and African influences. Stone Town today is home to the "new" Mashariki Palace Hotel. Mashariki, which means "east" in Kiswahili, according to the old documents seems to derive its name from its position, in fact of all the sultan's palaces it was the one located more to the east (the Sultan residence was in the near-by palace known as Beit-al-Sahel). Constructed by the first sultan of Zanzibar approximately 200 years ago, Mashariki Palace served as the residence of the Imam, the Sultan's first religious counselor. The building hosting the boutique hotel has now been carefully restored as per the original plan in order to reflect the antique glory and magnificence. The Mashariki Palace Hotel is a privileged residence for those travelers favoring refined hospitality in a charming setting. When you wander through the ancient corridors, your thoughts naturally drift to the past splendors of a lost era and to the secret memories of a bygone time ... all jealously preserved by its thick walls. Relaxing on the spacious terrace while overlooking the tropical seafront gardens, the sparkling blue waters of the Indian Ocean, and the Old Town; mosques, churches, temples, palaces and simple homes all around you. You cannot help wondering about the many generations of sailors who have come and gone with the Kusi and the Kaskazi; the monsoon winds allowing all journeys across the ocean. As the sound of the muezzin calling to prayer mingles with the laughter of children at play, and as the red sun sets over the sea while the starry African night advances, the live pulse of this vibrant town becomes so strong that past and present become but one. The legend of One Thousand and One nights - is alive in Mashariki Palace Hotel, Zanzibar ... more   less
