This place is great. The ambience is nice (with rooftop dining and nice decor), the staff are high quality. The manager is also a really nice guy--we're sort of "regulars," and he always greets us enthusiastically, checks on how our meal is, etc.. The prices are very, very reasonable (~8-10USD for an entree) by Zanzibar standards. Closed Sunday. They are now offering delivery around the Stone Town area.
House of Spices is probably my favorite restaurant in Stone Town for the array of food options it offers: it is much more than just an italian joint. Now, onto the food...
The starters and salads draw on fresh local products, particularly seafood and fruits, and the presentation is grand. They offer an eggplant, mango, seafood salad that is fantastic (picture 1). Pizzas are great (as a pork lover who has spent a long while in Zanzibar, bacon pizza is my favorite; capricisoso is really good too) and the pasta dishes--especially the ones with house made pasta--are awesome. As other folks have noted, they have a proper wood-burning pizza oven.
I've sampled some of the seafood grills friends have ordered and they've been great. But for the grill, I usually go for the meat. They offer lamb chops, steaks, pork chops and ribs, and mixed platters, along with an array of sauces to pair with the grills. The second picture is one of their grilled beef dishes.
Not a sweet tooth, but the deserts are also very good. The spiced ice cream is a nice way to follow a delicious meal.
Took an old friend here a few weeks ago who had never been. We had a great dinner, and she took friends back the next night! Seriously, go get some House of Spices!
