“More than just great Italian (though, the italian is pretty great!)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 13, 2013

This place is great. The ambience is nice (with rooftop dining and nice decor), the staff are high quality. The manager is also a really nice guy--we're sort of "regulars," and he always greets us enthusiastically, checks on how our meal is, etc.. The prices are very, very reasonable (~8-10USD for an entree) by Zanzibar standards. Closed Sunday. They are now offering delivery around the Stone Town area.

House of Spices is probably my favorite restaurant in Stone Town for the array of food options it offers: it is much more than just an italian joint. Now, onto the food...

The starters and salads draw on fresh local products, particularly seafood and fruits, and the presentation is grand. They offer an eggplant, mango, seafood salad that is fantastic (picture 1). Pizzas are great (as a pork lover who has spent a long while in Zanzibar, bacon pizza is my favorite; capricisoso is really good too) and the pasta dishes--especially the ones with house made pasta--are awesome. As other folks have noted, they have a proper wood-burning pizza oven.

I've sampled some of the seafood grills friends have ordered and they've been great. But for the grill, I usually go for the meat. They offer lamb chops, steaks, pork chops and ribs, and mixed platters, along with an array of sauces to pair with the grills. The second picture is one of their grilled beef dishes.

Not a sweet tooth, but the deserts are also very good. The spiced ice cream is a nice way to follow a delicious meal.

Took an old friend here a few weeks ago who had never been. We had a great dinner, and she took friends back the next night! Seriously, go get some House of Spices!

“Loved It”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2013

Great locally run restaurant. Went there based on reviews and were not disappointed. Nice ambience and views. Really good food. A bit smoky when the wind blows the fumes from the pizza oven your way buts that the only small negative. It's the best of all the many Stone Town restaurants with "Spice" in their name.

“great rooftop dining”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 2, 2013

After reading the reviews we decided to go to House of Spices for dinner on our only night in Stone Town. It was a good decision - both the food and service were very good and the rooftop terrace was comfortable and relaxing. Although we didn't order pizza we were impressed that they have a proper woodburning pizza oven. We had fish and pasta dishes and to our surprise they offered a complimentary appetizer which was a nice touch. When we left we took advantage of their offer of an escort back to our hotel which was definitely appreciated since the way back was dark, quiet and confusing.

“Good Italian but we thought it was Indian”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 29, 2013

Funnily, we were looking for Indian and thought House of Spices was going to be the place to get it! But it turned out to be Italian. We weren't disappointed though - the pizza was pretty good - probably better than the pasta. Cinamon icecream was also delish!
