“Great staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2013

By boyfriend accidentally left his laptop there - oops! And the staff contacted us (we had booked to come back for a night on our way home) and kept it safe for us until we came back. We were very impressed. The front desk staff were always very friendly and helpful too. The room was nice, the location was very convenient and the breakfast was great on the rooftop patio. Definitely recommend this hotel!

Room Tip: We stayed one night in the room with a separate bathroom - you didn't have to share with any oth...

My husband and I had a good experience here. The staff was very friendly, the location was very central - walking distance to everything, the breakfast was really nice on the rooftop patio, beds and rooms were comfortable and clean. We would stay again.

Everyone at the Zenji in Stone Town go the extra mile to make their customers feel right at home. Affordable, clean, lovely rooftop breakfast and extremely obliging staff. A little cool haven amidst the hustle and bustle of a vibrant place. Try it - you won't be disappointed.

Friends of ours recommended we stay at Hotel Zenji and we are glad we took their advice. We were looking for a relaxing end to a 3 week holiday in Zanzibar after climbing Kilimanjaro and going on a low budget camping safari and our stay at Hotel Zenji delivered.

The front desk staff of Chris, Sara and Ivy went out of their way to be helpful and always had a smile on their face. We stayed in the “Spirits of Nature” room, which while small, had plenty of closet and shelf space and a huge, comfortable bed. They say it is a double bed on the website, but I think it is actually a queen size and the pillows were comfortable (a nice thing after sleeping on the ground in tents for the previous 2 weeks). I’ll take a bigger bed over a bigger room every time.

The high heat and humidity kept us off our personal balcony except for the early morning but I still enjoyed reading there before breakfast on the padded bench and watching the activity on the narrow street below. Note: this room does not face the main road and we didn’t have any problem with noise keeping us awake – just the 3:30am call to prayers at the mosque but I’m used to that having travelled in Turkey. Their roof top covered patio is ideal for breakfast (and the breakfast staff were incredibly friendly too). The patio was nice later in the day for relaxing under a fan and watching the ferry passengers and port traffic. They even have a few games available for guests to play. My husband really, really, really appreciated the reliable air conditioning for a good nights’ rest, especially as it was so hot and humid during the beginning of the rainy season.

The location may be a concern to some as it is about 5 minutes from the main park in Stone Town but I felt safe walking in the narrow back streets or on the main street past the ferry terminal. We did always made sure we had our money belt stowed. Not everyone will feel comfortable away from the tourist areas so keep this in mind when you are looking for a hotel in Stone Town.

We booked a spice tour and snorkel trip through the hotel (which we never do on other vacations being so independent) and know we paid a bit more than by booking it ourselves but the convenience was a relief and both were great experiences.

Room Tip: book a room away from the main street for a quieter nights sleep

We have stayed at Zenj hotel every year since it opened 2008. It is a very nice hotel, the staff are very helpful and friendly and brings a nice atmosphere to the hotel. The rooms are cosy. We like especially the breakfast on the roof top terrace (lots of fruit/juice, home made marmelade and much more). We also like that the hotel is situated in a part of Stone town that has a more common public life ( less touristic).

I really liked this place. Little touches like homemade soaps and a communal roof terrace (with wifi) made it memorable.

We stayed in the treasure chamber room, and the shared bathroom was fine and clean and the room
Was locally decorated. Breakfast is standard Tanzanian fare (fruit and eggs) and is filling. Staff were all very helpful during our stay.

We stayed here 2 nights and would have stayed longer but they were booked up the next 2 nights. We stayed in the Treasure Chamber room which has a shared bath. The room has beautiful traditional furniture, a good bug net, and a good air conditioner. There was some road noise at night although it didn't really bother us -- I finally realized that what we were hearing was the trucks carrying cargo containers past our window as they unloaded a container ship in the harbor nearby.
The rooftop cafe is a comfortable place to hang out. We didn't try the downstairs cafe. Breakfast was good with excellent spice tea. We couldn't get wi fi in the room but it's available at the roof top.
The staff is friendly and helpful. We booked the sunset cultural tour through the hotel and had an amazing experience -- our young guide took us through the streets of old town and through the market. Then we watched the sunset from the roof of a high rise apartment building. Then he took us by dala dala to his home neighborhood where we had dinner cooked by his family in his traditional stone house. Finally, we went to his mosque and joined in with their dancing and drumming. Definitely not your typical touristy tour.

Room Tip: We saved quite a bit of money by opting for the shared bathroom. It was close by and we never had to...
