“Amazing Amara - missed it the second we left”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2013

We spent 3 nights at Amara at the beginning of September as part of our safari beach honeymoon booked through Imagine Africa and we were not disappointed with their recommendation. The experience was more than we had hoped for thanks to a combination of the friendly and knowledgeable staff/management, delicious food and of course 5* luxury accommodation and surroundings. We arrived in the Selous Game Reserve on a Coastal Aviation Flight from Dar with 4 other couples and ours was the final stop but Amara were the only lodge to make as big a deal of your arrival with a table set up with a snack and drinks reception. Immediately we knew these guys took it seriously. The "tent" was phenomenal and just what we were looking for. Ample space, huge comfy bed, plunge pool and the outdoor shower. We had a great view of the river from our tent which was home to the hippos. They called all night but we slept right through it because we were so tired from the days' game drives. The management surprised us every night with a twist to dinner (we won't spoil it for you) but if you ever get offered the French onion soup, you must try it! Our guide, Vitus, was very dedicated and put a lot of effort into each game drive as animals in the Selous don't come as easily as the Serengeti. The Amara was perfect for our honeymoon and we were sad to leave the relaxing and peaceful setting even when we arrived at our luxury resort in Zanzibar. Thanks to Peter, Anita and the whole team for an incredible stay.

Thank you for such a great review and taking the time to do this. The magic of Amara starts at the airstrip on arrival and I think sets the scene that you are arriving at something very personal and special. I am so pleased to read you enjoyed your honeymoon so much and all the experiences you had with us, I hope one day we can welcome you back! Best wishes Simon

have just returned from this very unique experience which was beyond our wildest dreams . The setting is so special and the whole team worked so hard to make our stay truly individual. The situation right by the river is beautiful whether we viewed it from the veranda, or from our very own plunge pool or sipping gin and tonics by our"tent" - 5 star luxury with a chandelier !! The hippos entertained us constantly while we were in camp. The game drives were exciting beyond belief and Joseph was a delight to spend so much time with. What a knowledgeable and talented guide he is? Our only regret is that we did not spend longer with this special team, p.s. The food was divine!

We stayed at Amara for 4 nights at the beginning of September for the start of our honeymoon and can honestly say we wouldn't have changed a thing!

We were greeted at the airstrip by one of the managers, Peter and felt very welcome from that moment on. The camp itself is beautiful, peaceful and feels authentic and the tents have everything you need for your stay.

All the staff members are very attentive and friendly. Peter and Anita are very welcoming and make the experience even more special - they're always around to greet you after your drives and hear all about your day.

The food is fantastic - 3 courses for lunch and 4 courses for dinner!! There was always a meat or fish choice at dinner and also a vegetarian option for my new husband. Every meal was beautifully cooked and well presented.

Being our first safari, we weren't sure what to expect but our guide, Vitus, was great and when we told him we wanted to see as much as possible, he really made sure we did: "off-roading" to track a herd of buffalo, spotting a leopard in a dry river bed and getting extremely close to a lion were the highlights of our trip.

Overall, our stay at Amara was amazing and we didn't want it to end - all the special touches for our honeymoon just added to the experience and we would recommend this to anyone thinking of a safari in Tanzania.

Thank you all the staff at Amara, especially Peter, Anita and Vitus, and to Imagine Africa for their recommendation! We hope to return one day!

Simply the most amazing 5 days ever! In early August we started our honeymoon staying at the Amara Selous (our first trip to Tanzania and indeed Africa) and were captivated as soon as we arrived, a dream come true...
From that first welcoming drink on the tiny Simbazi airstrip, Anita, Peter and the whole incredible team made us feel so welcome in their wilderness paradise. Daily activities were planned to perfection and we enjoyed the luxurious but homely facilities back at our tent and the lodge. A special thank you must go to our driver Vitus, a dedicated and determined explorer! Without his incredible knowledge we would not have seen half as many exciting sights, smells and sounds. We will never forget the thrill of going off the beaten (or not so beaten!) track to discover elephants high up in the forest area and following lion prints to their secret hiding places.
We also thoroughly enjoyed Phillip's walking safari and went fishing along the river with the hippos in close proximity; a wonderful opportunity to experience lots of different activities in just a few days.
Our introduction to the Selous at Amara was the perfect start to an unforgettable trip and will hold a special place in our hearts. We certainly hope to return one day...

To read that you were captivated as soon as you arrived means a lot to us and we are flattered by that, there is nothing worse than arriving anywhere in the world and being disappointed and I am so pleased you had such a special honeymoon with us ! I am pleased that the Amara hospitality and experience gave you both such a special stay, our part of the Selous is so off the beaten track it is so wild and varied and everything feels like such an adventure. As your first ever trip to Africa thank you for choosing Amara, thank you for the review and I hope we can welcome you both back one day. Best wishes Simon

We stayed at Amara for 4 nights in August as part of our honeymoon. Wow! We had the most amazing experience ever and I can honestly say this is the best place I have ever stayed. Everything is wonderful; the tents, location, food, game drives and most importantly the hospitality of the staff! Our guide Vitus was fantastic, he was knowledgeable, enthusiastic, reliable, friendly and caring. We could not have asked for a better guide and Vitus really made our trip. All the staff at the lodge are fantastic - Philip took us on an excellent walking safari and we enjoyed many conversations with Rajab and all the other staff. We feel truly blessed to have been able to visit this wonderful place. I have stayed in some top hotels but never before experienced a place like Amara. I actually cried when I left haha. If you are going I hope you enjoy your trip, you will not regret it!

Thank you for the review, I am so touched to read that Amara exceeded all your expectations and gave you the most incredible honeymoon. To read that this is the best place you have ever stayed is a huge compliment and we genuinely thank you for that as there are so many special places to stay in the world and to be your top ever favourite is a huge compliment thank you. To read we reduced you to tears in a good way is truly the most amazing feedback, Africa leaves its mark on people and the Selous and Amara is so special and the fact that you felt this way will mean huge amounts to the owners. I hope one day we can welcome you both back, best wishes Simon

Amara Selous Game reserve is simply wild luxury. The tent (luxury, lion proof tent) that you stay in lies along the river with Hippos chatting away all day and night!! if you want to hideout in your tent area/plunge pool you can with a butler just a walke-talkie call away with your drinks. The game drives were fantastic. If you want to go to a reserve where you have to really track and hu find the animals this is the one. Stumbling across wild dogs, lions, giraffes and thousands of impala was so much fun. All the while 3 course meals, G&T sundowners in the bush, fishing on the river, candlelit dinners by the river made it for us. To finish off our trip, on the last night an elephant even wandered into camp to say goodbye. We were on honeymoon and we cant have had a more special time at Amara. The service was impecable, and the staff really give the feeling they love their job. This is a gem of a camp and the reserve around it should be experienced now before any other camps get wind of it!!

Room Tip: No tip needed, all tents are next to the river

Thank you for such a wonderful review, we so appreciate you taking the time to do that. Wild dogs, naughty hippo, our lions and much more, you had an eventful time! How nice of the elephant to personally come and say goodbye to you! We go out of our way to be different and give guests really intimate and personal experiences and it's lovely you noticed that as it's what I feel makes Amara extra special. The Selous and Amara has left it's mark on you and I hope we can welcome you back one day, thank you for choosing to stay with us, best wishes Simon

The Amara Selous camp is set up by the riverside. On our arrival in a terribly exciting 14 seater plane ride we were greeted warmly by Peter and the team. We were taken to our tent in the bush and OMG !!! It was a luxurious haven !! The place had no restrictive boundaries which means that elephants, hippos, lions, giraffes and whatever else wishes to stroll will do so. It was an unreal experience listening to the hippos roar in the wild while tucked in bed reading. On the next day of our arrival we were on safari and were lucky to spot lions further down the riverside. Also saw giraffe, crocodiles, impalas, leopard, wilderbeest, ...... The staff were incredibly knowledgeable about the animals and their whereabouts. We felt extremely welcome and well taken care of. The food deserves a mention. We were amazed by the choice of menu and quality of food and service. Outstanding and exemplary comes to mind. We dined by the riverside one night, and in the bush around a bonfire another. It was dreamy , magical and romantic in everyway. I would highly recommend anyone with a desire to experience the wild without any compromise on the luxury to stay at the Amara Selous.
