I went up Toubkal in February with my two boys 17 and 24. I am 60 and not particularly fit. We drove up from Marrakesh to Imlil at 1700m where we met our team - our guide Ibrahim, Our cook Samir, and the mule and his owner. We loaded the bags on the mule, and walked up from Imlil to the refuge at 3200 m, a six hour trek. we stayed at the refuge of the night. It was comfortable but freezing - I think we had warm sleeping bags but kept on all three layers of clothing. The next day we did the big climb - the boys went up to the top of Toubkal in the snow and ice, a five hour trek. I was advised to do a slightly less strenuous climb to a col at 3800m. I found the thin air and steep climb hard to cope with, but Samir kept me going continuously invoking in Inshallah. The next day we walked down to Imlil. The three day trip cost around €200 per person, including all food and lodging. This trip is not for the fainthearted. But the combination off the mountaineering, the scenery and the companionship of the Berber team made it an experience I shall never forget.
