This is a great place to go after the hustle and bustle of Marrakech. The contrast between the places is great and allows one to appreciate them both fully.
Toubkal offers fantastic views and one we could have spent the entire stay sipping mint tea and gazing out at the mountains. By day the blue sky serves as the perfect backdrop for the spectacular mountains and, by night, the stars come out and it’s great just to lie on the terrace and spot the constellations.
However, we didn’t spend the whole time relaxing as Toubkal has a range of activities to tempt you. We chose to spend one half day trekking with a guide and one half day walking ourselves (fuelled with confidence having walked with Ali, a brilliant guide!!). The guided walk cannot be recommended more highly. Ali was there to answer any questions we had and offered an insight into the area, though he also allowed us our own time to chat and take in the awesome scenery. Our trek took us to a shrine (don’t get too excited as the shrine seems to be a large painted rock and Ali’s English didn’t stretch to filling us in on the significance of it, yet the fun is in the journey rather than the destination!) and a packed lunch at the top (although this was just some fruit, bread and a boiled egg--it was exactly what the body craved after such a climb….no complaints about it in the slightest).
Our own trek was equally satisfying, despite us not reaching the intended destination. I believe that there are walking maps, though we didn’t have one. I guess this is our own fault for not asking and one of the guys did try and give directions, though they only really consisted of his pointing at a mountain and telling us to walk up it. Although the guided walks are well publicised, it would be nice to have maps and suggestions for non guided walks to be more readily accessible.
As a place to stay, Toubkal is wonderful. The room (a standard en-suite) was comfortable. It erred on the small side but this is not a complaint as the small, rustic style is perfectly in keeping with the place and its ethos. Anything grand would have been at odds with the environment (we later went to Kasbah Tamadot which is very grand and also fantastic, though in a very different way! Toubkal does what it does and embraces the whole ‘mountain lodge’ thing in a brilliant way).
The room was comfortable and offered everything we needed. It also has the obvious attraction of a wonderful view! One suggestion would be that the fridge is stocked with some fresh fruit juice. Water is provided as are a seemingly endless supply of fizzy drinks. Given the rustic approach of the place, its emphasis on the environment and its feeling of being a monastery, to have a fridge full of fizzy drinks seems a little at odds with everything else.
A big bonus in the rooms are the Berber cloaks……it was very warm when we visited but they apparently come into their own in winter. We did, however, try the cloaks on and it’s great fun to pretend to be Obi-wan!
Meals are fist class and the dining experience is great. Everybody eats in the same room, though at different tables. If you want to socialise you are able, if you want to keep to yourselves and eat then you are also able. The service at dinner was also great and there was certainly the feeling of being made very welcome in a friend’s house.
We came away from Toubkal feeling very relaxed and it was great to be so far removed from the hustle and bustle of both Marrakech and home! However, I do agree with an earlier review which observed that the place is not as remote as one may think. Despite being in the mountains, we were surprised at how busy the area was. This is not to say that it was like being in a sprawling metropolis, but rather that there are a fair few villages dotted around the place. This is not a criticism (far from it as it was quite enchanting being so close to the culture) though it was a surprise. Throughout the day the locals can be heard and they’re actually surprisingly loud, though it’s not with the blare of CD players or screaming, but rather the low level noises of Berber life.
Toubkal offers a unique experience and serves as a brilliant contrast to both the bedlam of Marrakech and the grandeur of nearby Kasbah Tamadot.

The last time I stayed in the High Atlas was over 25 years ago and it had a profound effect on my life. What a delight it was to return and recapture some of that magic.

There is no doubt about it; the Kasbah du Toubkal is an absolutely stunning place to stay. You never really get a good view of the place as you walk up from Imlil but as you enter the gates and start to explore the grounds you realise more and more what a prime position it holds. Cleverly designed, with plenty of nooks and crannies, it is “rustic chic” in style with lots of stonework complimented by Marrakchi lanterns, Amazigh woodcarvings and tribal rugs.

The local staff who run the Kasbah are very friendly and helpful always being prepared to stop for a chat and explain the history etc. I guess this is all part of the “Berber hospitality” that the Kasbah promotes.

Lunches and dinners were tasty and generous with plenty of Moroccan flat bread to mop everything up.

We stayed in a suite called “Ifri” (part of the Garden House) which felt very secluded and separate from the main buildings. The living area, which was more like a flat (Timeout Marrakech has another name for it!), came with a fully fitted kitchen, dining room, lounge and two separate balconies reached by sliding patio doors. Having spent a week holed up in Marrakech in a dark riad (unseasonable torrential rain storms etc), it was invigorating to breathe fresh air and see some sky! I am lost for words to describe the magnificent 180-degree views we had from the suite. The small balcony had a view down to Imlil and beyond whereas the main balcony captured the cliffs of Tamadot, a waterfall and the village of Aremd with Toubkal steep behind it; a memorable moment of our stay was sitting on the balcony listening to Arabic Chillout while watching the light fade on Toubkal (see picture).

The bedroom was below the main living area and was very peaceful to sleep in with only the distant sounds of the waterfall and the village muezzin breaking the silence.

Some have said you have to be a walker to enjoy. Not so. If you are always “doing”, then this is a perfect place to stop.

What an exquisite way to end our holiday in Morocco. After the mayhem and madness of Marrakech, it was an absolute treat to kick back in this idyllic mountain setting.

The location and views were wonderful, the roof terrace (where you can be served hot and cold non-alcoholic beverages all day long) is just the most relaxing place on the planet and the staff are some of the nicest people you could ever wish to meet. Nothing is too much for them and they are constantly eager to please.

Can't wait to go back!

  • Liked — The "eager to please" nature of all the staff - the service culture is second to none
  • Disliked — whilst food was pretty good, there was far too much of it! The staff seemed to take it as a compliment when you commented that "there was too much food"!

This is a great way to get away from madness that is Marrakesh but doesn't offer much for those that don't want to hike. I thought it was a fantastic place but as I'm not much of a walker, found it a bit boring. Unfortunately we were only able to stay in the anex due to main Kashbah being fully booked. I would almost go so far as saying rather not stay if you can't stay in the Kashbah. The walk up for breakfast and dinner is tiring. Food was fantastic and everyone is very helpful.

Lovely location, lovely building

Food could be better for the price (funny how in the conde nast review the writer gets to choose her meal), and a choice of eggs rather than just boiled would make breakfast that bit more interesting

however it was the extortionate cost of the trekking lodge that spoilt it for us (well actually the compulsory trekking fee of 140 euros per person in addition to the per night cost). This was justified by tha fact that is was very remote and we would need a guide and mule and cook. 2 other couples actually came with us so actually mule and cook were shared. I can't imagein they got paid more, but discover would have. Also the lodge was not as remote as it was described to us as was in a village in the next valley on a road (piste). The kasbah itself has a better location.

Also the trek half of the return leg was on a road!

Management response from mikekasbahtoubkal, Owner

The cost of the trekking at 70 Euros per person which includes a very substantial picnic lunch in the country side is based on 2 people in an individual party. As the reviewer indicates this is based on a guide, a mule and a cook for a party of 2. Parties should not be grouped together as obviously happened and we will be looking into why this happened, it should not and is never our intention. As the reviewer points out there would have been cost savings as 1 guide, cook and mule were used as opposed to 3. I am accordingly posting a donation of 200 Euro’s to the site of www.justgiving.com/morocco which is a website dedicated to getting the charity www.roomtoread.org to enter Morocco to improve literacy for children. If you go to this site you will be able to see that the donation has been made. I would also be happy if those concerned on this combined trip of 3 couples to the Trekking Lodge contacted me and we will also refund the cost savings directly to them.

We endeavour to run an honest and sustainable business and always try to act with honour and good faith. As many will know we at Discover have consciously not appointed European managers which might have picked up on this mistake so we thank you for your feed back.

As the Kasbah has been said to have the “best views in N. Africa” it would be hard to better. The Lodge is in a truly spectacular and remote location – the Piste that is talked about is 17km long and is only wide enough for 1 vehicle with very few passing places. This fact is indicated in our literature and virtually everyone who has visited has agreed that it is remote or very remote. The fact that the reviewer did not feel it was remote I suppose only goes to show that all things are relative.

The Lodge has been appreciated by almost everyone who has spent time there as earlier trip advisor reviewers have indicated.

Come and judge for yourself.
