“MAZELTOV SHAZZA IN SHANGRI-LA!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2012

It was an out of this World, on top of the World experience that none of us will ever forget. We were literally the "Top Ten" who had flown to Marrakech to be with our dear friend Sharon to celebrate her marriage to her darling fiance David.

It was a wild and wanton hen bash in Marrakech!

The most exhilerating and most memorable part of the weekend was the delicious lunch at Mike and Chris McHugo's mind-blowingly beautiful setting of the Kasbah du Toubkal. Sitting at the top of the world under a Big Sky framed by the magnificent Atlas mountains, we dined on scrumptious local delicacies.

The air was pure and piercing, the tastes were an exotic sensory overload! The service was attentive, charming, warm yet dignifed.

It had been a long climb to reach this Nirvana. All our group on foot save for moi. Being an equestrian I adored the ride on my sweet, sure-footed mule, riding hands free as he was being led up the steep ascent by a smiling local Berber from the village below.

If you have a lust for life and adventure and yearn for a ravishingly thrilling one-off experience like no other, take a day trip from that seething cauldron of chaotic humanity that is down-town Marrekech and head for .... heaven!! What a place to toast a special occasion where benedictions and blessings do not have far to travel to be heard!

During a 14 day tour of Morocco in November excellently planned by Youssef and Hamid of Morocco Expert Tours Marrakech, we spent two days at Kasbah du Toubkal enjoying the high Atlas mountains and nearby Berber village, close-up, great food [harira soup and quiche, the best], attentive service by the staff [ breakfast at 7am though I was the only one awake and in the dining room] and beautifully decorated, comfortable rooms [radiant floor heat a big plus]. Trekking in the Atlas mountains had long been a wish and stunning views from the common area rooftop and hikes offered by the hotel, truly made this stay a dream come true.

Room Tip: High end property has a range of rooms and rates to choose from.

A friend and I recently stayed here. You park in a parking area "in town". A donkey will bring your luggage up and you hike to the Kasbah. The hike takes about 15 minutes and is fairly steep, but well worth the view. We were greeted with mint tea (always delicious). Our room faced the mountains and the view was stunning. The room is a bit on the small side, but there was a large closet and a large bathroom (even the bathroom had an awesome view!) There is a coffee maker in the room and the fridge is stocked with comlipentary soft drinks. The water pressure was great and the water was hot! The beds were comfortable and we were so excited the first night when they brought hot water bottles to our room. It was such a great touch and kept our feet nice and toasty (it was a little chilly at the end of November) Breakfast was hardy and tasty. We ate dinner one evening and it was excellent. Our second day we hiked on our own. We spent quite a bit of time sitting on our balcony or the restaurant terrace reading (well, we had books, but mostly we were just gazing out at the beautiful montains). The staff was all very friendly. The kasbah has a very interesting story and they are doing wonderful work in the area. Be sure to read the material about their history.

Me and my wife have just returned home after a lovely little break in Morocco, which we finished off with a couple of nights at the Kasbah Du Toubkal. Lovely way to end the holiday should I say!

The Kasbah is in a truly picturesque setting. On getting to Imlil you get dropped off in front of a little reception and then, the mule comes along, you load your bags and you take a 10-15 minute hike up the road to finally get to the Kasbah. Even this alone is an experience in itself.

Once we got there we got welcomed by the very friendly staff, offered mint tea and then shown to our room which is situated in the tower a few metres away from the entrance to the Kasbah. Our rooms had all the basic items you would require. Good size bedroom, warm bedding, nice warm shower with good pressure. Heater is provided in the room and it is needed and one thing which we found was quite a nice touch was that the staff put hot water bottles in our room before bed time (sorry if I might have ruined the surprise to anyone here :) Best thing of all was the view from our bedroom, which was absolutely stunning and we could see Jebel Toubkal right in front of us!

The only one thing I would say about the room is that lighting was a little bit dim, but this is something typical of any accommodation in Morocco I believe and in all fairness it is quite nice unless you want to pack your bags.

We went in November and were blessed with the best weather. We did a walk without the need of a guide. It can be a bit of a challenge and not really for the faint hearted, but certainly worth it. I would recommend getting a decent map before setting out on your walk detailing the tracks properly, bot otherwise all good. Best thing is that from the Kasbah, you simply get out and you can start the walking immediately.

One nice touch is the Hammam which is free to use for all guests. Just needs to be prebooked - try the freezing pool! and get it booked before setting off for a long walk. Perfect way to end your day.

WIFI is available in the main building, which is something I would not have expected, but nice to have.

Finally, food was really good. Yes it is true its tajin and couscous, naturally ... this is Morocco! Certainly no complaints about quality or quantity. You get a choice from two mains usually for lunch, but for dinner it's only one option - which is probably the only sticking point, especially considering the cost - I would have expected a choice here, even if it had to be pre-booked. Careful that alcohol is not provided on the premises or in any shops in the village of Imlil. They do allow it to be brought in and will even provide wine glasses, if you bring your own. Sadly we did not realise this, but that is completely our fault, not the Kasbah's.

Room Tip: The rooms in the tower have impressive views of the mountains!

We were warmly welcomed, it is very beautiful with amazing views. We had a lovely meal on the terrace. An artists paradise.

This place was amazing. I would go back here. Service is unbelievably friendly, everyone was so sweet. The architecture of the place and where it is situated is unparalleled. I wouldn't have stayed anywhere else!

Dont be seduced by the photograph used for advertising this hotel as it bears vitrually no resemblance to reality. It is earthy and may be a former monastery. There are cats EVERYWHERE. There was hardly any welcome and the staff really don't have a clue about how to treat guests. The Kasbah is the main starting point for all the treking that goes on around there, consequnetly they have a steady stream of new guests. My advice is to rely on your exploring instincts as there's never anyone around to show you where anything is. It is punching well above its weight with the tarrif and if there was a local alternative I would stay there.

Room Tip: Dont stay there...

As always, I have to assume good intent but your review does cause me some concern I would make the following comments.

Yes there are a lot of cats but they are outside cats and most guests like them and some comment favorably you are the first, I think to be negative about them.

There are plenty of local alternative to our property in Imlil you would have walked past several on your walk up to the Kasbah du Toubkal there are several listings for other accommodation on TA in Imlil

Strange you say there was never anyone around over 70 registered guides work out of Imlil and of course there are many unregistered guides also eager to guide people around. I would think the main problem if you walk on your own which of course you can and many people do is that some people (they are very friendly so not a problem) would be offering guiding services to you.

I hope these comments are useful and ask that reviewers look at all our listings on TA and judge for themselves.

Regards

Mike McHugo and all the Kasbah du Toubkal staff
