“Great holiday at the Silver Beach Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2010

Every year I go to Mauritius but was the first time in this nice hotel.
All the last times we went to a very expensive 5 starts hotels but none of them can beat this hotel.
Of course the structure is old but all the services and the quality of it are at the top standard.
All the rooms are very clean and the bath recently refurnished and clean. Very good food in an elegant restaurant also very clean (once a week they remove all the tables and wash the restaurant with a lot of water and cleaning product: really very clean).
Nice swimming pool usually very quiet and clean.
There are so many weaiters that you can have your personal one and if something falls down they will find for you in less then 1 minute !
Beautifull white sand beach just in front of the Hotel and due to the small number of rooms and guests no problem to find a nice place in the beach (usually the 5 stars hotel in Mauritius leave their guest to fight to have a place in the beach: not this one).
In 5 minutes of speed boat (too speedy for our European idea of "safe trip") you can get to nice Cerves Island that is certainly one of the best beach of Mauritius.
The staff of the hotel is so nice and so friendly that you will not find anything better in the world: we had the fight leaving late in the night and notwithstanding the check out time is at 12 we have been allowed to keep our rooms until the taxi came to collect us to the airport. This without any extra charge at all !
Free of charge wi-fi connection in the hall (you will not spend a cents to keep in touch with home just need a wi-fi phone or notebook).
The only part that are below the expected standards are: television (there is no satellite television, but honestly who cares?), the lock of the rooms doors are very old and not very efficient (who cares, in the rooms there are wall safes and the staff does not touch even the money left in the room!).
We had two ocean view rooms but also the bungalow rooms are very nice and would have given to us a considerable reduction of the cost as the bungalow are quite bigger then the ocean view rooms and so we could have just one room instead of two saving a lot (suggestion for family travelers).
Nothwithstanding the hotel is sourronded by a big and nice garden and outside it there is full of mosquitoes in the hotel it is very hard to find a mosquito and you have not to mind about the mosquito bites.
Very nice also the all inclusive solution: you will be required to sign the single bills anyway but everything is included and at the chek out you do not have to pay a cents of extra (unless you ask for extras like imported spirits, wine).
Poor the quality of the house wine but no limits to the quantity, good the quality of beers and other spirts served for free.
In the evening the hotel is surrounded by guardians that make the hotel a very safe place (Mauritius is not a dangerous area anyway but none can get in the hotel in the night so you can relax and leave free the childrens).
Not good for singles as the Hotel close all the activity (and noise) at midnight but great for relaxing.
Very nice also the shows done in the restaurant that allow also, who likes it, to dance with two good singers and live music every day and in addition to that also evey night there is an additional show done by other artists.
We usually flow to Mauritius with Airmauritius that have direct flights, but this time we made the great mistake to switch to Emirates that in addition to have a stop in Dubai (where it is difficult also to find a seat and a coffee cost about 8 Euros!) have a very unconfortable seats and always accumulates big delay. Be carefull in choosing the air carrier as the travel is quite long and a bad option like Emirates, may affect the quality of the holiday.

Read lots of reviews all raving about this excellent hotel and decided to give it a try, yes the hotel, staff, service, rooms all great, the only let downs are its miles away from anywhere, the food is at best a standard AI the buffet being anything thats vaguely chinese or indian on the 4 day d'hote most nights just edible sorry folks but have had a lot better, cocktails limited and the local stuff is very weak! We had a garden room which was huge compared to a lot of others with plenty of storage space, loads of hot water (for those who read my reviews it's a big thing with us) The staff from bottom to top could not do enough for you, the whole place is spotless.
The downsides are the walls are paper thin, the food and drink and the location. and the entertainment, it would really be best for all if they stuck with the house band and singers and left out the rest. Yes you can get a bus for 23 ruppee into flacq. Not much there, but you can get buses onto other places if you wish. The taxi's unfortunatly will rip you off a treat.
Be aware when booking trips that your transport will be extra, must admit it's the only place we have been that give you a price of the trip in print then when you come to book they tell you that the transport can be anything from £53. to £93. extra!!! Am taking this up with Virgin.
Lastly flew Air Mauritius and never will again, if you have the choice choose the other airlines.

Returned to the hotel after a fantastic holiday last year.It was just like going home to visit family or absent friends.Booked a sea view room through Kuoni everything was excellent. The flight from Newcastle via Dubai with Emirates.was very good we think they probably are the best airline we have travelled with.Kuoni was very good from being picked up at the airport to the wonderful tour we had with them two of us on a private tour with guide and driver very informative. The hotel we stayed there last March and had a wonderful time. This time was even better met some lovely people Tim and Mags from Cornwall,Nathan and Nadine had a good time with them. The food so much to choose from the a la carte four nights a week we had Beef Wellington one night you would pay a fortune in a good restaurant for that. The hotel is so friendly the staff from barmen to waiters to reception all try to make your holiday special. They all like to talk about football interact with them they all work very hard and it helps them pass the day.The service they provide we would say is the best we have received any where in the World and we travel extensively. The service in the restaurant especially from Yaasir,Akshay,Jeevraj,Saneell and Zee was excellent and we would like to thank them. The barstaff Kevin,Navi and Rishi always kept our drinks topped up as a good barman should. The rooms were always clean, the fridge topped up with water soft drinks and beer. All in all a wonderful hotel and we would not hesitate to go back tomorrow.

I have to agree with both the bad and good reviews about this hotel, yes it is full of "oldies" (hence a very quiet place) and lack of air con in the resturaunt, this was a big problem, and for the latter reason I have had to give the rating as a 3 star.
What nobody mentions is that you sign for all drinks and food even if they are on AI which is a pain when you want to get outside after eating and you have to wait for the signature slip. Also watch what you sign for, I got a shock when I checked out and had bills which were not mine!!
The rooms are very clean, but the pillows are like rock and the rooms air con is very loud and when you turn it off, it was as though it had never been on, so my advise would be to take your own pillow (I always do) and ear plugs so that the air con can rattle away in peace all night!
The food was good but quite bland, expected more spices to have been used, however the "puddings" were excellant.
Overall we enjoyed the holiday but we said that we would not go back unless air con (or sufficient fans) were put in the restraunt, or at the very least the evening dress code for men was relaxed.
Go there and enjoy, a very peaceful place which has a great beach for chilling out.

This a great hotel if you are over 40 and want to lay about. We booked this in a rush as a previous holiday had been cancelled.
I generally was bored after 2 days! We enjoyed our taxi trips out to Port Louis and the local market but if you want to get out and about without getting a taxi then this is not the place for you! The north of the island has alot more to offer and I hear the beaches are better.
The food was ok but the restaurant could do with air conditioning as eating in 35 degrees isnt enjoyable! The entertainment was a bit like Butlins and we have better beaches in sandbanks in Dorset! All in all I wouldn't go back and wouldn't do an all inclusive holiday again as i don't like the routine of it.
I wouldn't recommend this hotel to any of my friends but maybe my mum and dad! Mauritius is a beautiful place and the people are really friendly but do your research before you go!

This is hopefully a constructive critique based on a comparison with our previous visit in 2007 - see my review dated 9th Dec. 2007.

First - we enjoyed our previous visit so much we thought we would have another wonderful holiday here again - we did! Very little has changed since our last stay - it is still excellent value for money, clean, 5 star service, and a wonderful island with so much to do and see. However, I regret I can't give the hotel the 5 star rating I did last time, for the following reasons....

* Food - there seemed to be a repetitive nature about all the meals, and I have to agree with a previous recent correspondent that there was an apparent use of left-overs" in the buffets. There is a new head chef there I have been told - perhaps he is feeling his way, but he needs to know that the food is not of the high quality we experienced before.

* Pool - very cloudy during the whole of our stay, and apart from a small 15mm feeder hose "topping up" the evaporation of the water, and the early morning raking up of leaves and other dross by staff, it didn't seem to be filtered/treated, and appeared to be a bit on the dirty side, so we didn't use it.

* Yes, I know it was "summer" and we expected high temperatures, but the restaurant temperature , from breakfast until early evening, never fell below 36 degC, and topped 42 degC one day ( indicated on the Bar thermometer) Add to that the 100% RH and you get an equivalent ambient temperature of in excess of 47degC - not conducive to comfortable dining!! They really need air conditioning - even if it puts the prices up.

* Table tennis - mentioned here before - not available although advertised, and the pathetic pool table was tilted at an angle of 30 degrees and had grossly dented square balls!

* If the hotel is striving to keep up standards, then they should enforce their dress code more strictly. Several times during our stay, men came in to breakfast in just shorts and no tops. Strangely, my wife was asked to "cover up" one lunch time, even though she was wearing a sarong which entirely covered her bathing costume. 5 minutes later a member of the owner's family appeared in just a bikini top and skimpy shorts - she wasn't challenged - one rule .....

Those are the "moans" over! On the good side, the cleanliness and general very good service in the hotel more than made up for some of the negative points mentioned. Waiter and bar service was of very high quality, and whilst every single employee deserves a mention, special thanks to Sailin and Richie behind the bar, and to waiters Zee and Jenson for their above average service and dedication to their jobs. All the waiters worked in very extreme conditions, but kept up standards to a very high degree.

Our room cleaner/attendant was Keiron, and like our previous butler, Vikram, he gave his all to kept out room sparkling and refreshingly clean throughout our stay.

Entertainment - this was better than our first stay, and it was good then! There were some notable "acts", with special mention of the Sega entertainment, and the Latino dancers, both extremely good. Jude, the resident "Red-Coat" has been mentioned many times here before. Let's get one thing straight.... contrary to a previous comment on this site, Jude is not just "A Pub Singer". Jude is a very accomplished entertainer, and a great second tenor with a clear range of 3.5 octaves! I don't think he has been voice trained professionally, but he could go a long, long way if he didn't enjoy his work here. Together with Pam, the female vocalist, they entertained us royally, and perhaps deserve a lot more credit than they have received in the past.

That's it.... recommend it as a basic, comfortable, quiet, clean, happy and good value for money holiday - but not 5 star now!

firstly big praise for the BA flight crew both ways.. excellent service they couldnt do enough for you.

having normally travelled to the Maldvies this time of year we decided to try Mauritius for a change, and for the price we decided it was a good deal.

when we arrived the room was not ready so we had to wait, although not long.
room was fresh and clean and garden facing.

after having read many reviews about how the towels were arranged on the rooms into swans etc we were some what amazed that our room boy just about managed to move the pillows into different positions for the 2 weeks let alone make swans.....

for the first 4 days at breakfast we had real bacon yes real bacon and then that was the lot for the rest of the holiday, no explanation until last day, some rubbish about no pork or bacon due to health restrictions. then that night it was pork stiry fry ??? so little bemused.
i must say i have benn to many fine resorts in the maldives, and for those people who rated the food so high at silver beach i can only assue don't have an issue about eating the same food for lunch, dinner and then returned to the breakfast menu in some disguise.
the set meal is just a joke... come on really who eats stuffed pork with prunes, unless you are of the older age.. which i must stress most guests are... and they love the idea of being waited on hand foot and finger, to lazy to poor them selves a glass of wine.

booked via Kuoni who let themselves down badly in my eyes, the rep should be reporting back to head office, ie no table tennis table which has been long gone, and when we enquired about private transfer to the airport she told us £70. on the web site
maximum cost £26.00 !!!! plus a few other things i think whould be mentioned in the
brochure not just as small print. no in some instances not mentioned at all.. ie the non
smoking policy at the resort.. !!!

my impressions of the resort the boys couldn't do enough for you to try and make it your best ever holiday. food was at best average... and the snacks.. can some one explain the difference to having tea and cake outside for snacks but yet not a toasted sandwich ???

this resort is full of pretentious people who want 5 star service for 3 star money and want to make sure that everyone falls in line...

best described as Butlins from the 70's for the lay out of the restaurant to the eveing entertainment and the women in long dresses and men in long trousers. Not our idea
of a quiet relaxing holiday...

so back to the Maldives it is for us..

oh we did meet some nice people even if the average age was 60 + .........
