“3* Hotel with a 5* heart”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2013

2 weeks in a fantastic location which neither of us had experienced before and when we arrived the expectation was there to see the same as the promotional photos. We were greeted by the manager who welcomed us to his hotel and the staff started from there to be a caring, smiling and very gentle workforce to give us a holiday to remember. The hotel is small and it felt like a big family as you soon got to know the personalities of not only the staff but also your fellow guests. The hotel was impecably clean and the gardens very well maintained. The birdlife and wildlife (the friendly geckos) were always there to see. The location meant that we enjoyed the beach, the sea and the local life of Mauritian people who were always very friendly and this provided a very safe environment. The food was on the whole good however there is room for some improvement however on the whole the choice provided you with something that you could always enjoy. We would recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to have a Mauritian experience at a price that was not excessive and extremely good value.

Room Tip: 205 is fantastic!!

We spent a week at this hotel 17- 24 September2013.

This is our 4th time to the Island and we love the experience..Beautiful beach. The east side of the island is a little bit windy but nothing that is out of hand. There is some watersport at the boathouse but not a wide variety-for that you must go to Isle de Cerf(by speadboat-Let Rasj the big guy on the beach organize that for you)He organized several trips for us and our new friends that we made in the hotel-1.Speedboattrip to Isle de Cerf and the waterfall and a barberque on Ilse d Est(magnifesant-the crayfish and prawns.)2.Deep Sea fishing trip for Lisa and Wesley on the north side and they both caught a fish-great stuff.3.Glassbottomboat and snorkling.4.Parrasailing.

The local bus is a nice experiece-especialy for our South African people.

The downpart was that this hotel was set out in South Africa as a 3 star hotel but when we ask the hotel personel the told us it is a 2.5 star and when it came to the food- that is a big dissepointment. The service and the staff are exellent at this Hotel but the food is not nice.We were not thte only ones to complaint on this matter. Some people said they only eat this because they have to-other country. We went out to local as well as a South African restaurant-The Beachhouse in Grand Baie(Cabous van der Westhuizen's restaurant) fantastic.Gildas in Trou de Duece is also very nice. The picnicbascket from the hotel was beter than the food at the hotel.

If you like Spicy Mauritian food its fine but the juice was bad-it taste like colourd water and the sausages(morning noon and night for 7 days is terrible.)I spoke my mind about the food when I was there to the management but it was not really better afterwards. But still this is not the staff this is coming from the top.Dont now how to adress it but maybe some miracle will happen.

But apart from the food this is a nice hotel-will rather go back to halfboard at hotels on the west side where i,ve been previously.

Our last night we were entertained by Raj(Lamas) and his team-Barberque and saga dancers and music at his Bungalow(a 3 story mansion)It was fantastic.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2013

Spent 2 weeks at this hotel from 5th September 2013 to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary and overall really enjoyed our time there. This is a 3 star property and as such would be unfair to expect 5 star facilities but with a little bit of work and some management directive this hotel could really shine lots of Pro,s but unfortunately some con.s too.
Lovely location, right on a private beach, rooms basic but spotlessly clean, grounds and gardens very well kept and manicured, pool area a little cramped but lots of sunbeds at pool and beach. But what really makes this hotel is the staff will not name individuals as all the staff from reception to gardeners from chef to cleaners and all in between are a absolute credit to this hotel and i would like to thank all the staff for their hard work and dedication. But certain areas need immediate improvement I fully appreciate that catering for such a diverse nationality of guests is not easy but if i see steamed rice or fruit cocktail in the near future i will scream i am sorry but the stanard and variety of food can only be described as poor. Although if you speak to chef they will try very hard to cater to your needs, and the food being prepared in one part of the hotel and then being pushed through the grounds in a trolley to the dining room is a joke. Please open the reception bar during the day or put some table and chairs in beach area so guests do not have to sit in a dining room to enjoy a coffee or beer during the day. Lastly although the staff work extremely hard they need some directive and training from the management and not just left to their own devises. Sonny the manager sought me out to speak to me on my comments on the guest review form and has promised that major changes and developments are planned for the near future so this a least proves that they read and react to guests comments and thank you for that. I would not put anybody off visiting Hotel Bourganville and if the promised improvements are made would highly recommend this hotel.
Lastly i would like to thank all the staff for the special meal prepared and the special night provided on our anniversary. Thank you to all the guests of all nationalities who were so friendly and mixed so well to ensure the atmosphere in the evenings was superb but especially the Brylcream boys and Carol and Jan for providing such good company. We also wish Baz and Laura all the very best for their future together.

Dear Anthony,

Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment on your recent stay and for having chosen Bougainville to celebrate your 40th wedding anniversary.

We are happy to read that you liked the hotel and we are taking good note of your suggestions regarding the open area that you wish we create next to the dining room. We do understand that this open area would definitely add a plus to the hotel so we will keep this for future consideration.

Regarding the food, we once again wish to apologize for your bad experience you describe and would like to confirm that operational and HR actions have been taken to make sure this does not happen again.

We are happy to read that you loved our little surprise for your wedding anniversary.

We hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you again soon in our hotel.

Warm regards,

Jean-Paul Martin

5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2013 via mobile

Just returned on 17th September 2013 from a fantastic two week holiday at Hotel Bougainville. White sandy beach and turquoise waters. If you want a relaxing holiday in paradise then this is the place for you.

The Bougainville is on the East coast and therefore has a constant prevailing wind from the sea, which is welcomed in the heat of the day. For those who don't want such a breeze there is a swimming pool located in the middle of the well kept gardens. The hotel has 51 rooms comprising single, double and family rooms. Most of the rooms are set in the gardens with a handful facing the beach. We had a room next to the beach and were lucky enough to have a gorgeous view of the beach and sea.

The circular restaurant has beach, sea and garden views. It serves breakfast, lunch, mid afternoon tea and coffee, and dinner. We found the food to be of excellent quality with lunch and dinner mainly based around the Mauritian dishes - rice, noodles, chicken, beef and fish curries were always served. There is a salad bar and also soup with fresh bread. The restaurant alternates between buffet style and waiter service dependent upon the menu. Breakfast was a mix of continental, cereals, toast, fruit, yoghurt, crepes (or pancakes!) and eggs freshly cooked anyway you fancy. The hotel are very accommodating to meet specific dietary needs if required (or just fussy eaters!). This is quality food based mainly on local ingredients as to import is costly so what you won't get the extensive range you may get at an AI in Europe but what you certainly do get is quality food more akin to 4 star than a 3 star resort. Also useful to know that there is the usual dress code of long trousers for the evening and appropriate dress for women.

With the help of management and the chef I arranged a surprise romantic meal one evening to propose to my girlfriend. We were allocated a single table outside of the restaurant on the sand. The table was decorated with a white tablecloth and fresh flowers and we had personal waiter service. We enjoyed a four course seafood meal - the best we have tasted - accompanied by champagne on ice. The seafood was outstanding and would have matched any 5 star restaurant in the world. The fresh lobster was more than plentiful (3 lobsters between us) with a delicate sauce. The ambience was right, the food was right and she said yes! (Much to the relief of the chef and everyone else involved).

Every single member of staff at Hotel Bougainville is helpful, friendly and courteous - this is the best customer service we have ever experienced anywhere. We received a warm welcome from Pooja on arrival and Pinky was equally as helpful. Sunny, the manager, has a very visible presence particularly at mealtimes when he is able to engage with guests. The chef himself comes from behind the kitchen to engage with guests over their meals. The kitchen staff are more than happy to explain the various foods to you and encourage you to try different things. The cleaners and gardeners do a fantastic job of keeping the place spotless.

The weekly entertainment in the hotel consists of sega dancers one evening and singers on two other evenings. To be honest once you have started to wind down and relax, been on some of the trips/visits and spent time in the fresh sea air and enjoyed the occasional cocktail you are more likely to want an early night!

The hotel is occupied by various nationalities including English, French, German, South African, Slovakian. Everyone got on well with no single overbearing nationality.

The hotel offers free watersports (unmotorised) these include pedalos, double and single kayaks and single canoes. All of these are provided by the Boat House who will also provide masks, snorkels and fins for snorkelling around the reef in front of the beach, which at different times has an abundance of fish in very shallow waters. The Boat House will also organise boat trips.

Water shoes are recommended when going swimming to protect your feet from the broken coral and shells on the edge, and in the shallow area, of the sea.

There was no problem with Mosquitos at this time of year as the wind seems to keep them away.

We did scuba diving whilst there, we are already qualified divers and therefore sought out a local PADI dive centre called 'Dive Time' run by Mr Dev Kasool who has been diving in Mauritius for 20 years and is passionate about his diving over and above the commercial aspect and therfore groups are small - just us and Dev on two dives. Equipment is available for hire (although we took our own) and is kept serviced and up-to-date. He and Manu, his Divemaster, are based at Emeraude Beach Hotel at Belle Mare (up the road). Pick up was included in the cost with each dive costing around £35 which in comparison to elsewhere on the island is good value (diving is more expensive in Mauritius than in Europe or Egypt for example). You can negotiate discounted rates for multiple dives. Diving in Mauritius is very similar to the Canary Islands in terms of water temperature and visibility. The Canyon was a fast drift dive and exhilarating - the area attracting huge fish as it is outside the reef.

The must do trip is Ile Aux Cerfs, where you can find your own sandy cove and imagine you have the island to yourself. The other trip highly recommended is the Catamaran, for the experience but also the waterfall, snorkelling and Ile Aux Cerf stop off with a BBQ on board. The other places to visit are the village of Trou de Douce for the experience of the small gift shops and street food sellers. Flacq market is another must for the aromas and cultural experience of the bustling market, the food sellers from their variation on a cold frame to sell the food from - take the Leyland bus for 25 rupees (approx 50 pence) per person each way (number 55 bus). You will experience coconut milk by the glass for 10 rupees, bags of the Mauritian fruit salad (with or without chilli flavouring), bowls of noodles, meat and vegetable biriani and various savoury snacks and sweets. The market is every Sunday and Wednesday. There are also two shopping centres there and ATMs to draw cash.

Exchange your currency on arrival at the airport in Mauritius for a better exchange rate - there are a number of exchange booths including a Barclays one, which is recommended by the Travel reps.

Needless to say that this hotel exceeded our expectations. We booked the holiday with Mercury Direct as a late'ish deal. What we got was a fantastic holiday on a beautiful island, which was definitely value for money. Becoming engaged on this island means that Mauritius, and Hotel Bougainville, will always be particularly special to us.

We stayed the Bougainville from the 6th till the 13th of September 2013. Firstly, the staff are always helpful and go out of their way to ensure you have a pleasant stay. The overall quality of the hotel is truly 3 stars. The rooms are fine but don't expect modern finishes. The shower is very badly appointed. The overall apperance of the hotel, gardens, pool and beach is pleasant. The food needs major improvement. The variety is lacking and they hotel needs to cut less costs on the food. We had so many repeats of the same food in different meals we can't remember what we ate. The breakfast is dismal and the same every day. One positive is that the picnic basket is excellent. The kitchen also skimps on juice - it is terribly watered down. Only filter coffee and tea so get your cappuccino fix before you arrive. The water sport equipment is great and coral reef is on your doorstep. Keep yourself busy to avoid boredom as there is not much to do at the hotel. I wouldn't return and will definitely spend more money on a good package.

Had a great time here. We stayed for 12 nights and enjoyed every second.

All the staff strive to ensure that you are satisfied... they will go out of their way to help make your stay extremely satisfying. Room were clean and the maid ensured rooms were impeccably kept up to a high standard...

All in all, I would mention the East is slightly isolated, but that does not matter as transport around is easy, whether by scooter taxi or other means.

Do not be scared of any other negative reviews - probably Italians...
