We stayed at the Paul and Virginie for two weeks and had a great holiday. The staff are exceptional and were, without fail, friendly and helpful.
The hotel has a lovely location with a good beach and well-tended gardens. There are two swimming pools and when we visited there were always sun beds available even though the hotel was fully booked.
The hotel guests were divided into older couples 50+ and younger honeymooners (there were at least four weddings when we were there). There didn't seem to be any facilities for small children and I think it would be too quiet for teenagers. The nightly entertainment of music and quizzes was geared towards an older audience.
There were daily organised activities available such as snorkelling, boules and beach volley ball. Boat and sea plane trips were also available at an extra cost - don't miss the 'Catch Me' boat trip - it lived up to all the reviews!
We really enjoyed the food - there was always hot food or a continental option at breakfast. We generally opted for salads or sandwiches at lunchtime and dinner was either a buffet selection or a set menu - lots of fish and salads(delicious!). The best wine was their own house wine ( bottles, not the carafes) and the cocktails are definitely worth trying. We were staying on a half board basis and found this to be the best option cost-wise if you plan to spend a few days exploring the island.
It is quite expensive to eat in the fish restaurant (I think it was around £40 a head extra) but worth doing a couple of times as it is a very romantic setting - candlelight and soft guitar music plus the food and service are superb.
The hotel definitely rates more than its 3+ rating. The rooms are spacious, with air conditioning and fan . The linens and bath towels were changed regularly (beach towels supplied every day) and toiletries were also available. We had a bath with a separate shower and there was also a hair dryer and safe
The spa is very well equipped and the treatments were excellent (prices on a par with the UK)
We hired a car for a couple of days. It cost around £20 per day for a small two door Honda with air conditioning. We found the driving quite easy, the roads are good and reasonably-well sign-posted and we managed to find all the places we wanted to visit. It is also worth hiring a taxi for the day especially if you want to go to Port Louis which is very busy. Don't miss Arsenal with it's factory outlets.
