“What a fabulous place”

Veranda Paul & Virginie

We stayed at the Paul and Virginie for two weeks and had a great holiday. The staff are exceptional and were, without fail, friendly and helpful.

The hotel has a lovely location with a good beach and well-tended gardens. There are two swimming pools and when we visited there were always sun beds available even though the hotel was fully booked.

The hotel guests were divided into older couples 50+ and younger honeymooners (there were at least four weddings when we were there). There didn't seem to be any facilities for small children and I think it would be too quiet for teenagers. The nightly entertainment of music and quizzes was geared towards an older audience.

There were daily organised activities available such as snorkelling, boules and beach volley ball. Boat and sea plane trips were also available at an extra cost - don't miss the 'Catch Me' boat trip - it lived up to all the reviews!

We really enjoyed the food - there was always hot food or a continental option at breakfast. We generally opted for salads or sandwiches at lunchtime and dinner was either a buffet selection or a set menu - lots of fish and salads(delicious!). The best wine was their own house wine ( bottles, not the carafes) and the cocktails are definitely worth trying. We were staying on a half board basis and found this to be the best option cost-wise if you plan to spend a few days exploring the island.

It is quite expensive to eat in the fish restaurant (I think it was around £40 a head extra) but worth doing a couple of times as it is a very romantic setting - candlelight and soft guitar music plus the food and service are superb.

The hotel definitely rates more than its 3+ rating. The rooms are spacious, with air conditioning and fan . The linens and bath towels were changed regularly (beach towels supplied every day) and toiletries were also available. We had a bath with a separate shower and there was also a hair dryer and safe

The spa is very well equipped and the treatments were excellent (prices on a par with the UK)

We hired a car for a couple of days. It cost around £20 per day for a small two door Honda with air conditioning. We found the driving quite easy, the roads are good and reasonably-well sign-posted and we managed to find all the places we wanted to visit. It is also worth hiring a taxi for the day especially if you want to go to Port Louis which is very busy. Don't miss Arsenal with it's factory outlets.

The pluses:
Very nice hotel with a legend in the background.
Very comfortable and clean. Good personal service. Nice entertainment.
Indian evening (saris, ethnic food, etc.)
Excellent New Year's Eve party and fireworks show (absolutely astounding).
Nice pool, Nice view of the ocean.
The minuses:
The beach is quite scarce. The location might be a little "too remote and quiet" especially for younger guests.

Having read mixed reviews on this hotel I really wonder why some people bother to go away then moan and complain? We have absolutely nothing to complain about the holiday we have just had here for 10 days all-inclusive package. From our early morning arrival we were greeted by very pleasant staff given a drink and croissant and our room was ready for us at 9am, which dosn't often happen, so we went straight to sleep for a few hours. The rest of the stay was perfect, great crowd of people we met from England Scotland Australia New Zealand South Africa France and Germany. Excellent breakfasts, lunch and evening meal choices with fabulous smiling waiters and waitresses. Had a visit to the kitchen to tour round, no wonder the food is great the kitchens are obviously of a very high standard. Entertainment in evening pitched at the right level, no problems with sunbeds just moved round during the day to follow the sun, a great size of hotel with only 81 bedrooms, very clean, towels and bedding changed very regularly, Went on the pedalos, glass bottomed boat and the Sailesh trip to snorkel, have a BBQ on an Island with the jungle juice flowing and music and singing!!!
Really did not want to come home.

Veranda Paul & Virginie

Read all the earlier reports before booking but thought that the Paul et Virginie could not be as good as most people say. But it is true - beautiful hotel, great position, lovely atmosphere, lovely food and wonderful staff who can’t do enough for you and what’s more it is genuine! This was the best hotel we have ever stayed at particularly when you realise that it is only actually classified as 31/2 star.

You do need to get out from the hotel to see some of the island from a different viewpoint. The buses run past the hotel every 15 minutes and are very cheap. We caught several and were the only tourists on the buses. Most times it is best to look out the windows at the side as If you look to the front the speed that they travel at may give you a heart attack! The speed limits are in kilometres per hour but everyone travels at least at the same speed in miles per hour even though their speed limits are lower than ours and the police are keen to set up speed traps particularly around Port Louis. All the cars travel on the same side as us but they overtake on both sides!

All the Mauritian people that we met, from all backgrounds, were really friendly but there is a very wide gap between the ‘haves’ and the ‘have nots’ but though this doesn’t seem to worry them we were told that although the island is a paradise for us for two weeks it is not the same when you actually live there. But we will definietly go back again to Mauritius and the Paul et Virginie.

“Lovely Romantic Getaway...but....”

Veranda Paul & Virginie

Sep 14, 2007
6/8 found this review helpful

We were in Mauritius for a friends wedding which was being held at the Legends Hotel next door.

We thought that the Paul et Virginie Hotel was a lovely, quiet, romantic hotel, but we did struggle after 7 days....boredom caught up with us !

Before going we read Trip Advisor and were dreading the food ! However the food was no where near as bad as reported !! I am a fussy eater ie dont eat Seafood/Fish and so this did cause issues as I was immediately restricted from eating in one whole restaurant (the one by the sea) and then 3/4 of the menu of the main restaurant ! This was not very impressive and was never advertised like this....So to sum up the food was good, but became extremely boring after the 5th night as it was very much same same !!

All the staff without exception at the P et V were all excellent and were very professional and helpful.

The beach is OK although very small ! The pools are lovely, although again very small and shallow. The view from every room is beautiful. If you are looking for complete relaxation and nothing to do...then this hotel is perfect !

There are a few 'Bewares' which we didnt know until we got there. The first is: if you are a man take several pairs of trousers for the evening meals...no-one told us this rule and so my husband had to wear the same pair of trousers every night !!!!
Secondlly there is only 1 bar and 1 restaurant...the bar by the sea is always closed and the restaurant by the sea you have to pay a surcharge for...even if you are all inclusive !!

We went next door for 3 evenings for the wedding and we must admit that the food and services on offer were far superior. However as always there are bad sides too. Legends had a wedding a day and so big groups of drunked people every afternoon and evening....so much busier, younger and less relaxing than P et V. That is where the P et V excels, their unique selling point !

In general we found Mauritius very dissapointing. We felt that everything was far too expensive and very over rated. We went for a trip around the island (get a taxi and pay them for the day to take you round the sites = £35) and we got taken to waterfalls we couldn't see and a dead volcano covered in trees....very strange to show tourists nothing !!! Again this showed Mauritius as very over rated.

We have come home relaxed but will not be returning to Mauritius again !
