“Too many bugs!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 16, 2013

Our experience differed quite considerably from other TA contributors.
We arrived on the 27th December. On arrival we were met and shown to the bar area and offered a welcome drink, much needed after a long haul flight and long taxi journey. We were then explained to by the hotel manager all of the rules, yes rules of the hotel. For us the main areas appeared to be well kept and yes boutique (great word for cramped) in style. We were shown to our Beach Front room, we could have been on the beach front however, we could not see the beach due to the trees although we had a roof terrace and if we climbed up there we could see the sea. The room was very small and not really fit for purpose, we could not fit our clothes in the wardrobe and had no where to store our luggage which had we stayed we would have needed to leave out anyway to access our clothes. The room was very shabby chic with ants in the sinks and a lot more ants in the bath.

Dinner was a little strange, the food was quite good but it would have been nice to know what we were eating, plates were put in front of us without any description or explaination, desert followed but only when we promted the waiter that we had not had any.

In a very short space of time you realise that the staff seem what I can only describe as frightened or on edge, it was very strange and made you feel very uncomfortable.

On returning to our room there were even more ants, they were joined by a huge cockroach - great! At this point we called the holiday representative to arrange a meeting to change hotels. The room was barely big enough for us nevermind the additional occupants, I could hardly sleep.

Breakfast was a help yourself affair and again the attitude of the staff was odd. My husband asked for a coffee, he was told 'make it yourself' which he did, he asked for toast and again was told 'make it yourself' it was the way it was said and not having had breakfast there before a little help would have been appreciated.

Our Virgin holiday representative managed to organise another hotel for us, unfortunately we were expected to pay and additional £6800 for the other hotel as 20 Deg refused to refund the cost, even though the room was not fit for purpose and they had no other room we could be moved to. What left me even more flabbergasted was the managers comment when we explained our concerns, she said 'I think it is best you leave'

So we did!

Dear guest,

Thank you for your comments. We are very sorry for the cockroach and hants that you found in your room, but if our hotel was full of those animals, it woud be on all the reviews...
It's not the case and it would have been easy for us to remove them immediately from your room by mean of special products. But once again we apology and I am writing this with a lot of sincerity !
To be honest madam, the problem was that you simply did not liked the place ! How is it possible to complain for the lack of space in the cupboard while there are TWO cupboards in your room ? How is it possible to be surprised that the toasts were on a help yourself service with a breakfast buffet formula ? I think that 99% of the mauritian hotel have a breakfast buffet... And concerning the composition of your meal, it is written on a stand in the restaurant entrance AND on the first page of the menu... And in 2 languages...To summarize, you were so negative that, yes, it was maybe better for you to leave the place. The TA reviews on the french and english sites are showing clearly that your advise is not reflecting the reality. Best regards. Michel Bourgeois, owner of 20°Sud hotel, Mauritius.

We were staying nearby to this hotel and I called on Monday to reserve a table for dinner on Friday, which was my birthday. When we arrived however we were told by the manager that we could not be seated as we were not wearing long trousers. The dress code had not been mentioned when we made the reservation and we were smartly turned out in white dress shirts and short-sleeved shirts. We had eaten already at most of the smart restaurants in the area, none of which had a dress-code of ourse, it being a holiday island and 25 degrees with 80% humidity at night!

The manager was polite and apologetic, mainly that the dress code had not been explained at the time of booking, but was adamant that it could not be waived. Fortunately we had eaten earlier in the week at a superb fish restaurant nearby, Le Pescatore, and we were able to get a table there again to celebrate my birthday. It is definitely one of the best places on the island and highly to be recommended.

20 Degrees Sud has a fantastic setting and I might well have thought about staying there on a future visit to Mauritius, but certainly not after this experience. For those considering it as a hotel option I would simply caution that you pack pairs of long trousers, which you absolutely will not need anywhere else on Mauritius!

Dear guest, thank you for your review.
As ALL good and refined restaurant in the world, we are refusing shorts and t-shirts for diner. It's a question of style, class, and respect for the other guests.
I am sorry that you did not understand that.
Best regards,

Staying in the 20 Sud Hotel in Mauritius was probably the best decision we ever took - the rooms are all decorated in a way that makes you feel at home and on vacation at the same time. The whole hotel compound has a great vibe, with lush palm trees and fountains everywhere. To the hotel belongs a private beach, but also some boats. You can join the boat crew for a snorkeling trip every morning. Breakfast and dinner are absolutely delicious and there's usually a small, but fine animation at night (piano player, local band, etc.).

We chose to spend 7 nights in the South and then finishing up with 7 nights in the North. We had seen this hotel on the web and it enticed us to try it, so we pushed our travel agent a little.
WHAT a gem this place is!! - gracious - inclusive - well mannered etc. The owner goes around to all the guest before dinner and talks to all! When she was away - her "right hand" carried on.
The food is very good - but the service is the best - these employees excel.
Vine selection is very good and enjoyable priced.
Their catamaran boat trip to Flat island and the Governor House is a MUST! Forget the cost - it is worth every rupee and more.
One comment: the staff prefers French to English - but we had NO PROBLEMS.
We swam from the "beach" - but this is not the "mile long sand beach" - great for grownups.

Room Tip: Oasis - relaxation - want to return.

What can we say that hasn't been said before. Every aspect of the time we spent here was heavenly & beyond our expectations. Thanks to Michel & Anne the owners and the wonderful staff. In the day we relaxed in luxurious settings. Each evening we were surprised & delighted to enjoy the varied atmosphere & menus. Could not have had a better time.
