“Stay here to blend into real Mauritius style”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 19, 2013

The Hotel
This was my first trip to Mauritius and I was so glad we chose to stay at the Hibiscus Beach Resort & Spa. The size of the hotel is perfect - not too big and impersonal - but just right so that you feel home from the beginning since friendly staff knows you from day one. The rooms are perfect size with very big, comfortable beds and all required amenities including fridge and air con. All rooms have a balcony or a small terrace which is perfect for a sundowner or a bottle of wine after dinner. We were lucky to have some friendly neighbors who came to join us for some drinks at night and the next day we could organise a deep sea fishing tour with them.

The Location
This hotel has been built in the early/mid 90ies by a well connected family in Mauritius so by that time the owners were in the lucky position to choose the best possible place for it. It has been built on a small secluded part between two white sand beaches on the characteristic black Mauritius vulcano stone and the whole development is overgrown with mature palm trees by now. A true gemstone - so it feels like a well established and tranquil place but with all livelihood and party just a couple of minutes away in Grand Baie (bars, restaurants, discos). The Hotel also has its own jetty so the on location 5* Padi Dive Operators can take you out to the house reef with their diving boat. At the time we were at Hibiscus a group of professional technical divers were on location and testing dive computers for two weeks - they certainly know where to dive...

The Staff
Truly friendly and family feel. The whole team at Hibiscus were most helpful in all aspects, i.e. organizing a boat outing for us, deep sea fishing tour, a visit to the local rum distillery or simply some good advice on the best clubs or ice cream in the area (ask for the gelato place nearby!).

The Restaurant
The breakfast comes with limited choice but there is a chef serving eggs at your request and the yoghurt and fresh fruit are great. Buffet style dinner is not everyones' taste but you can order a la carte if you like. The local preparation of food is spicy and all the meals we had were good quality. Our highlight was clearly when we brought back a yellow fin tuna from our fishing trip and the chef agreed to prepare it for us. We had a fantastic ceviche style starter and grilled tuna steaks with baked potatoes as main. The wine list is not too comprehensive but we paired this with a Boschendal Le Bouquet, followed by a very solid Sancerre.

Would I stay here again?
Yes, absolutely. I always prefer a smaller place with maybe a little less luxury than a faceless 5* development. It was nice to get in touch with locals in and around the hotel so easily which was due to Hibiscus' unique location, much better situated than many of the larger scale and modern hotels in the South the island. If you want a true blend of Mauritius style I recommend this place.

Room Tip: Best rooms are probably on the third floor since you have views over the palm trees onto the pristin...

Owned by a really friendly German, managed by a british couple and with a topclass german cheff, this place has it all. Add to this a beautifull lush garden (they grow a lot of their own veggies) and a shallow beach and this is the perfect hideaway close to Santa Catalina. The service was superb. Mitch and Heidi (owners) helped us out when we wanted to go diving (manta rays and whale sharks!) and when we there was a British couple (Rosie and Simon) who more or less ran the daily business. Hope they will stay, but if they will open up their own place I can already recommend them upfront. And the food.... Yes it may nit be the cheapest plate in the area, but to get perfectly prepared pesto risotto or super fresh red snapper for these prices is still a bargain. Many thanks and for future travellers... Order the weissbeer Paulaner, nothing ends a sunny day better

I stayed here for 2 weeks with group of clients on a conference. Wonderful location, great view of the ocean (both from my room and the restaurant). Excellent service from staff - Abela at the reception was fantastic; restaurant staff very courteous above all the Resident Manager Rachel is an invaluable asset to the hotel any day!!! Breakfast quite rich and other meals averagely well prepared. Only snag is the rooms need to be services better.

Room Tip: Choose higher floor rooms for perfect view of the Pereybere Bay....but be ready to walk up the stair...

3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2012

I stayed 12 nights at the Hibiscus Hotel with my partner for a series of meetings and the accommodation was organized for us. The one big positive of the hotel is its location. The Pereybere Bay is very pretty and the hotel feels very private and has a lovely view.

I have no issue with staying in three star hotels, however I still expect the rooms and property to be properly maintained. I would have preferred to pay more to get something nicer. Overall I guess it is just average. Unluckily for us there was mix up with the price that was agreed we would pay for the room, and although we were just about leave to stay elsewhere (e.g. Merville Hotel or La Mauricia), fortunately the owner upgraded us. Just as well as we would have definitely gone elsewhere for better value for money, especially as we weren’t told about the mix up until we had already stayed one night.

- Bedrooms
For the price, the rooms are very basic. The deluxe suite room we stayed in the first night was little shabbier than the royal suite. Things are starting to fall apart and not everything works, e.g. fittings in the room and bathroom. There are very very few power points available. In both rooms the bathroom were not closed off from the bedroom.

The sheets and blanket smelt terribly in the royal suite, so we had them changed. The beds are firm, which is good, and the pillows were lumpy and thin, even when we changed them. Some of the pillows in the first room were good though.

The safe is not bolted into anything and is small enough that you can walk away with it. There is no deadbolt/latch on the door to the room.

- Breakfast
As others have said it is very basic. A limited variety is OK as long as the quality is good. Unfortunately the variety is not only limited, but the quality is hot and miss. Beautiful freshly cut fruit and pastries, not good cheese, meat and cereal. You do get your choice of freshly prepared eggs and pancakes, which are tasty.

- Cockroaches
Yes, there are plenty of large cockroaches there, and depending on your room they may be everywhere at night. It’s disgusting. When the manager was showing us our new room he said “don’t come and complain about insects. You live in the tropics and know that they are everywhere”. Yes, they are, however I have stayed in many tropical places and never had such cockroach problems. I guess it’s the compromise of having a quite a nice green hotel environment, however I am sure from living in the tropics that the cockroach problem can be much much better managed. One of my colleagues went out and bought bug spray as he said the cockroaches had taken over his room. There are ants too, but I didn’t see too many trails of them, so was not worried.

- Internet
We were informed that there would be free WiFi in the room. This is not currently the case, however it is meant to be rectified.

- Service
Mixed. Just average I guess. Nothing special, but not too bad. Housekeeping do a reasonable job.

- “Spa” and gym
I really enjoyed the sports massage I at the spa. Professional and strong. There is a sauna, which is out of order, and there is a small hamman room, which stinks of mould. The gym is small, but not too bad. Some of the equipment is broken and there is no aircon or fans. The windows open wide enough though to get a good breeze.

Room Tip: Ask for a room closer to the sea.

Hi, thank you for your comments. We have increased the number of housekeepers in order to enssure more clealiness in the rooms. We are trying our best to keep these little monsters i.e insects, out of the rooms by keeping the garden tidyer. However sometimes we cant stop them trespassing in our world. Kind regards. The Hibiscus Team.

My family and I were looked after very well. I have two small children and the staff was excellent with accommodating all our needs. Very very friendly and polite. The room we had was fine for our family of four with a king bed and an extra single bed. The balcony had great views. Breakfast included pancakes, eggs made to order, fruit, juice, cold cuts, sausage, yogurt, condiments, toast, sweet bread, assorted croissants, wheatabix, cornflakes, milk, tea and coffee.
Hotel does lunch and buffet dinner that has to be ordered beforehand. Pool us great, gardens are very nice to walk through. Hotel organizes dive trips. There is a boat shop to rent kayaks etc. There is also a spa on premises.
Hotel is situated on the water with a jetty to swim from, and is located between two beaches- one with a private access through the hotel and one public beach.
A wordof caution to the discerning traveller- this is not an all inclusive 7 star resort but a small, boutique like hotel. Not a sterile environment but a real gem. As for the ants, well this is thd tropics. Keep doors closed at dusk and u will be ok. For us, we'd rather have ants and roaches than dangerous insecticides/pesticides.
All in all despite two small children I was able to relax as also enjoy. An excellent holiday. A big thanks to the hotel and staff.
