I stayed with my daughter in the Veranda Hotel Grand Baie from 15th to 25th April 2009. I would recommend it to anybody who wants a reasonable hotel at a reasonable price.
Breakfast is buffet style with a chef to fry boil or scramble your eggs. There is the usual cereal, fruit, ham, sausage or bacon, beans, bread, toast, buns, honey etc. No marmalade!
Lunches a chosen from a small menu which covers snacks from £4 to £8. I had spicy chicken wings and chips usually and two beers (£2 a bottle).
Evening meals. 4 days there is a buffet and 3 days a fixed menu with a choice of main course. There was plenty of choice at the buffet. The fixed meals were OK but never amazing. Always edible and well cooked.
The rooms were clean and comfortable and cleaned daily. The pools are next to the restaurant and were enough for most peoples swimming abilities and safe for children.
The beach and sea are down a few steps. You can swim in a square area and next to it there are boats for hire. I went on two speed boat rides which were great but expensive at £90 for one hour and £120 for two hours. However they were very enjoyable. You can even have a barbecue on your own island if you want.
Drink prices were ok. A double gin and tonic (330ml bottle) was 375 rupees £7.50. Cold and delicious. Beer is Phoenix at £2 330ml bottle. Cokes etc £2.
Staff were friendly. Those who spoke English were friendly the others not so much obviously.
ENtertainment each night included sega dancing, a singing group, discos. The live acts were good and the discos were not so good and went on until 11pm. To be honest I wanted to go to bed by 9am anyway.
There are plenty of excursions if you want them. You need to do something other than sunbathe but remember its hot. Bus trips and visits to Port Louis should be left to cool days if there are any.
