“the most relaxing place I've been to.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2010

its a small nice hotel with a few rooms, but the rooms are huge with a nice balcony. The meals were great and the staff was pleasant. the beach is really small though which was no fun as it was a beach destination.

We stayed at the hotel for 4 nights in September. We had a beach cotemporary suite. This is really the best room at t he hotel. It was right on a private beach with a private pool. There are only 6 units in the beach contemporary wing, which makes it extremely private. The room and the bathroom were big and exceptionally clean. The best part was that there was an outdoor private bath tub and shower leading from the en-suite. When we arrived there were flowers scattered on the bed, in the hand basin and on the toilet. It was just too stunning. The photo’s on the website does not do justice in comparison to when you there.

The staff were most welcoming and accommodating. We had a problem with the hot water but the reception staffs were just too accommodating. They gave us a complimentary 2-hour boat cruise and sent us to another room to shower. They were excellent in accommodating our needs and made sure that the problem with the hot water was sorted out. We even got a call from the bookings welcoming us and apologised for the inconvenience. The reception staff kept us up to date with the hot water situation on a regular basis so there was no need for us to continuously ask us. Nothing was ever to much trouble for any of the staff at the hotel from the receptionist to the waiters or the bar tenders.

Staff at the restaurant were terrific. My husband is vegetarian and Mr Suku (waiter) made sure that all his needs were taken care off. On our first night at the restaurant, Mr. Suku new exactly which room we were in and that my husband was vegetarian. Mr Suku discussed the next meal with my husband and suggested what the chef could provide for him. A big thanks to Mr Suku for taking such good care of my husband’s dietary needs. The food was very good every night and breakfast was great. The location was great as it was very private but you could still catch a bus to Grand Baei.

We ended up staying here having moved from the Ocean Beauty Hotel (refer to review posted) and, having paid up front for over two weeks at the Ocean Beauty Hotel, this was the only other option open to us apart from cancelling our booking completely and losing what we'd already paid. This wasn't the type of
hotel we'd normally book. Location is good with access to various restaurants etc in Grand Baie but other than the location this place doesn't have much going for it and other hotels are better value doe
money. Food's average but plentiful: buffets are provided for breakfast and dinner. Service is haphazard but the people working here are genuinely pleasant and helpful. The hotel's undergoing a much needed rennovation: some of the rennovated areas are nice enough and if you book in here then go for a contemporary beach
villa. Maintenance could
be better: I didn't see anyone clean any of the swimming pools in over two weeks of staying there; we had problems with the water supply which the hotel did work to resolve quickly. Finally, the hotel does have a private beach but if you'd like a good beach get out of Grand Baie. This wasn't the right place for us, but I'm sure it would be great for others. I wouldn't recommend staying here as I think other places offer better value for money.

After a long & rickety transfer from the Airport we arrived at Ocean Villas. We were not overly impressed with the hotel frontage, in need of some renovation & update in comparison to some of the hotels along the main road. Most of the reception staff were extremely helpful, but it was dependant on who was on shift. One particular receptionist was always very curt. As we arrived early due to the flights our room was not available so we headed for the private beach. Very clean & beautiful. although quite windy [ the hotel sits in a large bay & I suspect suffers from a 'windy' position] Once the room was available we were very impressed with the quality of room & large bathroom. Occasional hiccups with water flow in shower, you had to time it right & once filled the drainage for bath didn't work, room/bathroom was cleaned every day. Bed was very large & comfortable. However close to our room were several occupied villas - these villas owned dogs that tended to start barking at about 5am most mornings!!!
Restaurant & food - We were all inclusive. Breakfast was probably the best 'meal' of the day with a decent selection - however tables were never laid correctly - you always had to hunt for salt & pepper, SPOON's seemed to be in short supply including tea spoons, never receiving one with your cup of coffee. Evening meals were disappointing & I had concerns with the salad & meat section as this was only laid out on a table, no refrigeration at all, & meats were out for a couple of hours.
the staff were pleasant & helpful however we did get the impression that as we were all inclusive our needs were not attended to as much as those on other packages or paying.
Evening entertainment was sparse - singers would attend whilst you were eating & then disappear for the remainder of the night. I am sure if the entertainment had continued the bar area would have been a lot more livelier.
Would suggest that you have a good look round at the cost of trips - we booked most of ours through Mauritours & paid over the odds, shop around to get best deals.
Trips we went on - Catamaran to Il aux Cerf - beautiful place but only had a couple of hours on the beach - could have been more. Under sea walk - best trip ever great experience - take some extra money as they can make a DVD of your walk, well worth it. Glass bottom boat to see dolphins plenty to see groups of 30+
Best beach - Tros aux Biches - beautiful white sand, clean, you do get bothered by the hawkers but you learn to ignore them. its only a 10 min bus ride form just outside hotel.
first couple of days we used taxi's then changed to buses as they were so cheap!!
Visit the bazzar in Grand Baie - haggle them down in price or walk away they will soon drop prices.

Overall we loved Mauritius, love to go in there summer, would probably go further down the coast next time for a 3* the hotel was basic but contemporary garden rooms were 5* couldn't fault them, would recommend these at the hotel, as they were adult only too.

We stayed in Ocean Villas for 3 weeks in June last year and 4 weeks in June-July this year and would like to share our experiences at this wonderful place. We are South African family with two kids, girls 3 and 14 and prefer to have long stays at a holiday resort: we found Ocean Villas to be a perfect place for this purpose.
Reservations. Cathie at Reservations is very professional and reliable, she made sure that our requests regarding accommodation, child bed, airport transportation with more than usual amount of luggage were promptly attended to.
Reception. People here a very friendly and attentive, in fact we had better feeling interacting with them than with the reception in a famous 4 star resort here in Mauritius 2 years ago. Everything, from a screwdriver to fix my kneeboard to replacing towels is done within minutes and they always greet you with genuine smile. One particular example of excellent service was when last year I cancelled and re-booked an excursion due to intermittent weather 3 times in one week. Not a single sign of irritation, they just did it with a smile and when we finally went to the excursion on the 4th attempt, the weather was good and on return they just said “sorry you had to wait for good weather”. Thank you, Jennyfer, for your excellent service!
Accommodation and housekeeping. This place has something very unique in Mauritius, really spacious semi-detached villas. This is extremely convenient for families with small children, especially the fussy eaters because the villas are equipped with fully stocked kitchens. Our villa was close to the pool and the restaurant (we specially asked for that and they accomodated us on both occasions) we could have our lunches and sundowners on a spacious terrace with full view of children splashing and running around the pool. One remarkable feature here is almost surgical cleanliness of the villas, they thoroughly wash everything every day and change bedding at least every second day, sometimes more often. Another important feature is that they allow you to use their washing machines and tumble dryers at no charge, with our girls the cost of using normal hotel laundry service would be astronomical and we were very pleased to use this service.
Gardens . The villas are set in beautiful tropical gardens, which are very well established and meticulously looked after. The setting is tranquil and inviting, the only improvement here could be if the large coconuts that are hanging over ones head are removed regularly. The chance that they hit somebody is very slim, but their absence will allow for better relaxation in this tropical paradise.
Food and restaurant. The food changes every day with good mix of set menus and buffets. Everything is well presented and most dishes are of excellent quality. The friendliness of waiters in the restaurant is remarkable, they always greeted us with a smile and attended to all our needs immediately. I would like to say special thank you to very professional and kind person, Sookhoo, who became a friend with our 3 y.o. and helped us many times with her difficult eating habits.
Beach and watersports. The hotel has a small private beach which was always very clean. It has well appointed grass shades and beds with mattresses. They have free watersports three days a week, such as waterskiing, banana rides and glass bottom boat that takes you to nearby reef for excellent snorkeling. Both water ski and glass bottom boat teams are friendly and professional. The water ski guys accomplished near impossible task in teaching a real couch potato like me how to kneeboard.
To summarize, we had excellent time at Ocean Villas on two occasions and look forward to come back again next year.

We have just returned from a idyllic 7 day holiday in Mauritius...our home during the vacation was Ocean Villas at Grand Baie.
Ocean Villas is a really comfortable and homely place to stay in Mauritius and we found it perfect in every way.The villas are nicely decorated and quiet and all amenities are well provided ,the staff at the hotel are excellent and very friendly and attentive to the guests needs .The restaurant is rather good too.
We would definitely choose the Ocean Villas again if we plan a trip to Mauritius in the near future ...it is a good option ,especially if one travels with families and also small groups....Location is a few kilometers out of Grand Bay but taxi services can be obtained ...We would recommend a stay at this hotel if you are looking for comfort, peaceful surroundings and a beach closeby.

think a bit before because the hotel, probably perfect, has something to improve:service at reception, daily cleaning of the rooms, room gadgets (no shampoo, no body soap, no hairdryer,...). In general it is an hotel in the standard, not exceptional, but ok. I had a l ittle problem of communication but solved in extremis...I definitely suggest to improve the reception team, to renew the rooms. The hotel has the best portion of beach (even if very small) in Grand Baie but it is far from the Gran Baie village. It is mandatory to take a bus (they are on the road until 7pm!!!) or a taxi (they are on the road every time). I spent
a good holiday but could be better...

Dear Sir,

First at all, thank you for making time to note your comments about Ocean Villas.

We are sorry to learn that the room was not to your expectations.

The basic room which you had booked (sold during that time at around EUR 55 for 2 persons included breakfast) does not have shampoo and hair conditioner included, but the soap is.

For your information and for the benefit of other readers, the upper room categories have all toiletries included (hair dryer, bathrobe, and slippers also).

If you did not have soap at your arrival, it is a human mistake and we apologize for this fault which must be quickly resolved.

Concerning the hair dryer, they are at your disposal on request at the reception desk. We are once again sorry if there might have been a communication problem between you and reception staff, because our team always tries to do the best to satisfy our Guests.

We take advantage of every low season to renew our rooms and improve our services and that is why, we hope to welcome you a next time to prove our willingness.

We thank you again and send you our warmest greetings.
