We have just returned from a week-long stay at Shandrani and can only say that it was the holiday of a lifetime.
The all-inclusive package means that you never have to worry about taking a wallet or forex with you, no bills to sign, prices to convert or decisions to make - if you want it, you have it.
And despite this meaning free unlimited booze, we saw only one young couple really hitting the bottle and setting out to get drunk - most of the time everyone was just happily mellow and there was no loud partying to disrupt your holiday. Good live entertainment at the bars and a nice selection of cocktails.
You pay for booze after 11pm - but we never stayed up that late as we were always exhausted from the day's activities and the good food.
Ah yes the food...
It was unbelievably good, especially in the two reservation-only venues, Porto Vecchio and Le Boucanier - which would rival top gourmet restaurants anywhere in the world for presentation and flavour.
Even the buffet was anything but run-of-the- mill, with a wonderful array of seafood, curries, traditional Creole dishes and absolutely divine salads and fresh fruit. The lunch venue Sirius offered light but tasty options for lunch.
Bar service was always prompt and efficient - we never waited more than 5 minutes for drinks and were served by waiters whose charm and flair made the wait a non-event.
The service throughout the hotel was excellent - polite, friendly people for whom nothing was too much trouble, and who anticipated our every need.
We did two snorkelling trips which offered a wonderful array of tropical fish and lovely coral formations. Also enjoyed the free golf, tennis, windsurfing, etc etc.
The rooms were extremely comfortable with huge comfy beds, ample cupboard space, large bathrooms and a well-stocked minibar.
The grounds are magnificent, with lush tropical trees and colourful flowers.
Included in the package is a free massage at the totally serene spa - so good that we went back and booked another one at the end of our holiday, sending us home well rested and totally relaxed.
I know people have complained about the planes, but honestly, we didn't find it to be a big issue - yes you are aware of them, but you hardly notice it because you are so busy enjoying yourself. And the bonus is that you have a mere 10 minute transfer from the airport, instead of having to drive an hour to the overcrowded, overcommercialised north coast.
We fell in love with Mauritius and its beautiful scenery and people - and will certainly be back again, staying at the Shandrani. There was nothing we could have asked for that it did not offer.
