I lived at the Maritim between January to March 2008 and have stayed in almost every room type they have to offer!
Overall I'd say that it's a nice hotel, well established but rooms and pool are in need of a refurb - started to look a bit tired. Out of interest there is a six month refurb scheduled for 2009.
As I was there so long it did feel like home when I arrived home each day and the regular staff knew who I was and always asked about my day which is nice.
The standard rooms are okay and all room have a sea facing view but depending on your location this might be hindered by trees or gardens but nonetheless all face the sea. I would recommend the newer executive rooms - much bigger, great bathrooms and bigger balconies with deck chairs. Only problem with these rooms is that they're a 5 min walk from reception (rooms start 4,5,6 e.g. 508).
There is a daily programme that has activities to keep you occupied all week. You could potentially go to Mauritius and not leave the hotel (which would be a shame!!).
The location is in Balaclava (approx. 20min north of Port Louis and 20mins south of Grand Baie. Only problem is that it's in the middle of no where so it's not very easy to go out and wander around as it's surrounded by bushland. This means that ultimately you are trapped to eat at the hotels restaurants unless you drive or get a taxi to Grand Baie. To be clear there are no restaurants within a 10 min DRIVE from the hotel.
The bar has a nice location overlooking the sea and ideal for sunset and has free wi-fi access. They have happy hour between 5-7pm (half price drinks) but they don't advertise this so keep it in mind.
There is a spa there - I had a couple of massages which were average and overpriced to be nice. If you want a great spa experience then go to Grand Baie - much better. There is a gym as well - it's okay.
If you like bike riding then I would definitely recommend the sunset bike ride and the ride to Pamplemouses with Vik. He is very knowledgeable, sweet and funny.
Also I always found it amusing that so many weddings take place at the hotel. Everyday there would be a different wedding. It was like a well practised production line of weddings all with the same hairdo, flowers etc. This was part of my daily entertainment (when I wasn't working).
The hotel is one of the older estabished hotels so has big grounds. There is always someone to go to get away from other guests. Make sure you check out the ruins and see the turtles - I felt a bit sorry for them actually.
My only complaint while I was there was regarding the tv channels. They have a few English channels and for my last 6 weeks they didn't work despite my repeated complaints.
Oh they also brought my a cake and glass of chamagne for my b'day which was very sweet of them!
Overall a good safe option. You won't be disappointed but don't expect to be overwhelmed.
