“Wedding in paradise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2012

We stayed at Angsana Balaclava in September 2012. The purpose of our stay was for our wedding and it was beautiful. There were a group of 7 of us in total and we were all there for a fortnight and our wedding was on the 10th day of our stay. Having looked at most of the hotels in Mauritius before selecting this one for our special day we were not disappointed. Speaking for myself and my husband the trip was perfect from start to finish.

When we arrived we were greeted with a warm welcome, cold towels and a passionfruit drink - very refreshing after a 13 hour flight! We stayed in a Garden suite which was absolutely perfect. Close to restaurant, spacious and on the 3rd floor so had spectacular views across the ocean and of the sunset. We had the option of upgrading to a Spa Suite but chose to stay put as the room was perfectly sufficient and we didn't need the small pool.

The pool area was wonderful. As the hotel wasn't very busy everywhere was very quiet. The pool was a little chilly but ok once you got used to it. The food at the pool bar was lovely as was the service. The staff couldn't do enough for you.

Very impressed that water skiing is complementary. I still can't ski (I have tried for years), but my husband went most days and loved it.

In the evenings the food and service was again fantastic. Preetum, the food and bev manager was fantastic as were all his staff (Ashvin, Yashvin...the list goes on, they are all wonderful!). In the whole two weeks we were there we never had the same dish once. Menu was always varied and if there was something you wanted changing due to allergy/dislike of an ingredient, they were always happy to amend it or create something for you.

Breakfast again was super. Always brilliant service and huge choice all of which tasted lovely.
Whilst we were there my parents celebrated there 25th wedding anniversary and my father in law celebrated his birthday. On each occasion they were presented with a lovely cake in the evening - a really nice, personal touch!

As for the wedding - a dream come true. The florist, Angelie, is wonderful. She created the most beautiful flowers and did so much more to help us. The beach boys, the restaurant staff, the spa staff - all went over and above their call of duty to make our day perfect. Yann accompanied us to the capital for the legalities and was an absolute star! The photographer and videographer (Nicolas Malachie and Gonzalo Fanny), although not part of the hotel, created the best footage we could have wished for so would highly recommend them to anyone.
Overall our two weeks was the best two weeks I have ever had and I owe a lot of that to the staff at the Angsana and the quality of the hotel itself. I wouldn't change any of it!

There were a couple of minor points which can be learnt from, all of which were discussed with Pascal the manager, who again, was a superb chap!:
It was bizarre that tea and coffee in the room is not complementary. In a 5* hotel you expect drinks to be expensive but you also expect tea and coffee to be included especially when waterskiing is free!
Didier, the wedding co-ordinater, was the most unhelpful out of all the staff. Had it not been for the attentiveness, professionalism and kindness of all the other staff there our wedding would have been far from the perfect day it ended up being. I say this because a wedding is a once in a lifetime experience and needs to be perfect. After my initial meeting with him i was very concerned and it did cause unneccesary stress. The reason I say this is because if anyone plans to get married there do not panic or let it put you off, just be aware that the staff will make it perfect for you not Didier and if he tells you something is not possible, go above his head, it usually is. We didn't ask for anything elaborate or unreasonable but at times felt like we were.

Other than that, superb holiday, amazing hotel, even more amazing staff and a wedding we will remember and cherish forever! I even shed a tear on leaving!

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor - you then get the sunset view!

We were on a short 7 days holiday, and selected Angsana as we had stayed at a Banyan Tree property in Thailand earlier and had enjoyed our stay.  We are glad that we chose a BT property again this time.
The things we liked about the hotel were:
1- Very good and friendly staff in general. Vinay and Nas were exceptionally GR8!
2- The hotel has an excellent  Chef, offering creative dishes, and indulging our taste buds.
3- This is a new hotel, and everything feels new and well maintained.
4- Proximity to Port Louis
5- Nice private beach, albeit it's a short stretch of shoreline.

The hotel is quite far from most attractions, and it takes on average 1.5hrs to get to most attractions (predominantly in the south and east) which makes it inconvenient. On the other hand it offers an opportunity to admire the sights during the drive. We used a very good and safe taxi driver through the hotel called Durgaish.

All in all, we loved the place and strongly recomend it.

Having read reviews and stayed at other hotels in Mauritius, I was looking forward to the Angsana experience. All I can say is that it hasn't lived up to expectation. The room is very good, but you have to pay for tea & coffee in the room, the towels are limited (2 bath & hand towels), the turn down service always arrives when you're getting ready and the oh so 'friendly' staff don't seem to be oh so friendly. Whist the hotel itself is attractive, it is surrounded by scrubland and somewhat isolated. I think it would be ok for a few days but we are here for 2 weeks. Whilst we'll return to Mauritius again I don't think it will be to this hotel.

My wife and I spent our two-week honeymoon at Angsana Balaclava, the first two weeks of September 2012. The hotel is a gem. It is beautiful, intimate and romantic, accompanied by a fantastic and attentive staff. The big bonus for this hotel is that it not only does have a great location and layout, but the kitchen is also exceptionally good (as a hotel standard). Every single day the head chef will produce a new and varied menu, so no matter how long you stay, you will be accompanied by a gastronomical experience.

We highly recommend this hotel and thank the manager and his staff for making our honeymoon an unforgettable experience. Keep up the good work and all the best for the future. We will return.

(As a minor comment for improvement I would recommend you to alternate the background music you use in the restaurant and pool area to a grater degree than only being limited to the two CDs I heard you playing ;-)

If you are lucky you might even see some dolphins swimming past the beach in the morning :-)

5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2012

I stayed at the Angsana Balaclava - Mauritius from the 26-28th of August, 2012. It is a well located hotel about 25 minutes from Port Louis and around the same from Grand Baie.

Location: Angsana is located on the beach in the Balaclava area, in the north west part of Mauritius. The beach is quite nice, though not too large but large enough to go with this 52 room property.

Reception: Large, very airy and overlooking the azure blue waters of the Indian ocean. Should you be coming from the airport or from any other place, just stepping into the Angsana will rejuvenate and refresh you. They have a way of making every part of the hotel smell divine. The bell boy will make your luggage disappear and re-appear in your room like magic. Certainly deserves an applause! The check in was oh-so -smooth! Efficient, polite and fairly quick is a good way to describe the service.

Rooms: I stayed in the Beach front suite. The room is approx 100 sq meters (if you are on the first floor and 170 sq meters if you are on the ground floor. Both the first floor and the ground floor Beach front suites have a private plunge pool set in the deck/patio/balcony area. 100 sq meters is truly huge to say the least. The room looks and feels very comfortable. The mattress is great and the sleep quality is a ten on ten. Yes, the channels on TV could keep you occupied for hours if you are the vegetate- in front -of- the -TV type of bloke!

I could easily have played badminton in the bathroom. The bath area is replete with a beautiful independent tub made in stone, probably from Thailand. There is also a shower, away from the bath tub, about 10 feet away from the tub. Perhaps this could give you a vague idea of the size of the bathroom. Oh, this is the BATH room only. The commode, changing room and sinks are in a separate area. So, if you are one of those chaps who immediately need to jump into the shower after your morning ablutions, you would need to take a hop, skip and a jump to reach the shower.

The patio/sit out is again really large and the view of the ocean is completely fabulous. I was in room 102.

Food and Beverage: Excellent food. Hats off to the chef. I tried the Beef Sirloin followed by an incredible creme brulee for dinner and dreamt of it till the next morning! You should know that the Angsana does not do the regular buffet sort of dinner or breakfast. It is all A La Carte and the food quality is good enough to take you to la la land. If Yashvin is on duty at the restaurant, do ask him for his recommendations. He is spot on!

Spa: Angsana has a pretty good spa by the look of it. I could not indulge in any treatment since work related matters took too much of my time- sadly. The spa looked really quite inviting.

Pool: The Angsana has one fresh water pool and another salt water pool with a sand floor.

The resort is small but wonderful. Pascal the General Manager, who I had the pleasure to meet, has certainly got a handle on this resort and is a great chap to generally chat with. Pascal, are you listening? Bravo to you and your wonderful team!

I would certainly stay here again!

Room Tip: If you have booked a Garden Suite, that is fine. But do check out the Beach front Suite before you c...

Whatever I write will be less.
We went to Angsana with great expectations, from the property as well as service, this being a 5 star property. But these guys somehow managed to exceed all expectations!
The check-in in itself is so pleasant and non intimidating, with welcome cocktails and warm towels, it can totally satiate the tired soul.
This is supposed to be the smallest 5 star hotel in Mauritius (62 rooms, thats all!) and this helps BIG time! I have stayed in other 4 stars and 5 stars which make you feel you are in some small town in itself with so many people buzzing around you!
Due to the small size, the service quality thus is great! You have everyone, right from the front desk to the servers in the restaurants, to the chef, ALL calling you by your first names in a couple of days time! One does feel at home, though more like a palatial home :)

PROs:
1.Too many. Rooms - Amazing! Every minutest detail taken care of! Like the TV can revolve a full 360 degree following you wherever you sit. Coffee machines, Tea maker, fruits, daily two bottles of water, amazing bath products, I can go on and on.
2. Food: Awesome! The chef is Indonesian and he can cook ANY cuisine. And not just cook, the presentation is right out of Masterchef Australia! :) The best part is, he does not compromise. If say a Thai curry is supposed to be spicy, he would make it spicy to preserve the taste. Ofcourse there would be a milion people warning you, including the chef, before you order the same :)
3. Beach: Great beach, great water activities like kayaks, snorkelling, etc all free though.
4. Last but not the least, In suite pool. We really didnt want to be on beach, and never used the two swimming pools in the hotel!
5. Angsana Spa: One should definitely try this. Its an amazing , relaxing experience!

CONS:
1. Cant think of any, but probably there can be a way to warm water in the in suite pool.
2. And the TV can do with more channels :)

Overall: I am So going to come back here again! And try other Agsana properties Only thanks to this experience.
Lasting impression: The front desk team actually standing at the door and bidding us good byes with smiles on their face, waving their hands! Touched us no end!

Room Tip: If not choosing a beach front villa, choose rooms on higher floors to get a little more privacy in y...
