“Wonderful Honeymoon in a great hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2013

Spent 10 nights here for our honeymoon. Loved every minute of it!

We paid for extra for an ocean facing jacuzzi room. My advise here is all the rooms are ocean facing and for what we paid for the jacuzzi, it probably wasn't worth it as it was quite small and a lot of the time full of ants so not really usable. The room itself was lovely, a little bit tired in places but perfectly comfortable nonetheless and we were lucky enough to have a perfect view of the sunset.

We stayed on the all inclusive package and thoroughly enjoyed all the restaurants and bars. The best restaurant in our opinion was Veda, gorgeous indian food. Segala and Noble are also both good but we found the set menus a bit bland. The buffet restaurant Senso was generally very good, mountains of choice and particularly good on Mauritian night. There's a choice of 2 restaurants for breakfast, we went in Senso most days as there is a lot of choice.

Slight problems with flies and sparrows during the day time, especially at breakfast in senso where sparrows are flying about everywhere. Being a hot country of course there's not much that can be done about this however it is a bit off putting to begin with when you see a sparrow pooping on the table next to you when you are trying to eat breakfast.

The hotel are not very forthcoming in telling you the activities that you can do from the hotel. We popped along to the boat house on the second day and they advised us of all the activities. They say you can do snorkelling, watreskiing and various other watersports for free however most days for one reason or another these activities weren't available.

We paid to go on the dolphin tour and an island tour which were both good. We booked through hotel although had plenty of offers through the quite annoying beach hawkers. The hotel prices were actually cheaper than the hawkers so be careful not to get sucked in to any 'discounted rates' they tell you about. We also went on the blue safari subscooter which was a bit naff for the money and a bit weird!

So to summarise the plus points- great food and drinks, gorgeous setting and great atmosphere, great entertainment especially the band on mauritian night. Friendly staff, nice pools and facilities.

Negative points- flies, sparrows, beach isn't the best and sun beds a bit dirty.

Overall great honeymoon!

Dear amelia19812,

Thank you for your review and congratulations on your honeymoon.

Regarding the birds, we are attempting to rectify this, you might have seen the bird buffets around where we try and feed the birds away from the restaurants in order to stop them joining you for breakfast!

We're also working on solutions for the flies.

Congratulations again, we hope you see you soon.

kind regards

To be clear from the start, i don't like big resorts. But given that mauritius is full of them (there isn't a lot else) we thought we should give it a try. We picked this place based on the reviews and the fact that it was considerably cheaper than most other equivalent places. We stayed for one night, b&b. Overall it was a positive experience and excellent value for money.

First, the positives. Our room was excellent. Very large, modern and luxurious. Seating area with large tv, tv in bathroom, weird egg-shaped bath and separate shower, fab towel sculpture, welcome fruit platter, balcony with sea view. Free water sports - i tried waterskiing and did some snorkelling. Breakfast was truly impressive - absolutely massive buffet with every possible thing you can think of and lots more besides. Although the beach isn't as good as some other places they have made the best of what they've got and created a little lagoon for swimming/ snorkelling. Nice rocky area facing the sea where there are crabs and weird jumping fish living on the rocks.

Now the not-so-positives. It took ages to check in and staff didn't seem to be entirely on top of things. We only ate lunch at the hotel, in the poolside restaurant; the food wasn't great; also lots of flies around. The hotel is huge so it takes quite a long time to walk from your room to reception. There are a few signs of wear on the buildings fabric (but not in our room).

Dear emyLondon,

I want to thank you for your review of the property, and am glad that the room product ticked all of the boxes for you.

We are sorry that you didn't enjoy the food, and we're looking into what could have gone wrong.

Your points regarding front office and the lengthy check in process you received are not indicative of the service at the reception, however we will review our processes to be better in the future.

kind regards

My wife and I stayed here 7 nights on a vacation. I am a Priority Club Platinum member and was recognized as such. Ive stayed in InterContinental hotels in the US.

Good:

Staff is very friendly
English is understood and spoken well by staff
FOOD FOOD FOOD!! The Veda restaurant is the best Indian food Ive ever had anywhere, the buffets were great as well.
Our room was large and very clean with a great view of the ocean.
The bed was very comfortable
It was low season so getting beach chairs was quite easy
The resort activities (kayaking ect) were fun
The reception for priority club members was nice

The somewhat good:

Drinks were ok, not very strong, very pricey, but expected at a resort
Prices in general were fairly high for food
I was not made aware that breakfast was complimentary (Maybe because of my status?) A decent surprise upon checkout

The no so good:

I was having problems with the code given for the in room internet and it took 3 days and 2 visits to the guest relations desk to get it resolved. I was given a generic code to use for the rest of the say.
The internet was not as fast as I would expect, but it was manageable.
It would have been nice if the irons had steam capability
The maids leave the door open while they are servicing the rooms (which makes sense), but on the 2nd day after our room was serviced we found a lizard on our ceiling. We did not call the staff to have it removed as im sure it would have taken a lot of effort and the lizard did not bother us the rest of the stay..it just stayed behind the curtains and came out time to time :)
Make sure to bring slippers to wear on the beach as it is full of rocks.
We werent too impressed with the Asian restaurant.

The bad:
Flies!! and cats..but mainly flies. I cant remember a meal (especially breakfast) where most people werent constantly bothered by flies. It became really annoying. All i can suggest is that in the buffet area the closer you are to the stairs the better. The same cats would frequent the dining area, the staff tried to remove them, but they would always come back.

Overall a nice hotel that I would recommend to others.

Dear encore02,

I would like to thank you for your review of our resort and the time you took to write it.

Good to see that you loved Veda, it gets many accolades and many saying it's the best Indian food they've had, so I'll pass on your comments to Chef Vijay and his team.

In regards to the flies and the cats, we are continually working on solutions to both of the issues, so it is something we are working on.

Thanks again and we look forward to welcoming you back to the IC Mauritius.

kind regards

We have just returned from an eight night stay at this hotel. We were greeted on our arrival by hotel staff as we got out of our car given a wonderful cocktail and refreshing wipes after a long journey. This was just the beginning of the staff showing how delightful, happy and efficient they were. Nothing was too much trouble day or night. Unfortunately my husband was taken ill and admitted briefly o hospital. The hotel remained in constant contact with us and helped us by liaising with the hospital and travel insurance company. They arrived with gift basket and a car to take us back to the hotel. The hotel is right on the beach and has beautiful views across the ocean. A very clean and tidy hotel, an army of cleaners both inside and outside on the beach took daily care of what we saw and enjoyed. The food selections were very good every day, the flies were sometimes an issue but we could forgive this after all it's the country you visit and ALL that it brings surely. The only downside at the hotel were the cats and yes we saw them use the beach as their toilet, not nice. An all round wonderful holiday we want to repeat, thank you to all the staff especially Nashreen xx

While not perfect, this hotel was a great value compared to other similar hotels in the area charging signifanctly more. The hotel's website offered a fair price unlike other hotels that offer an outrageous price on their site only to find it for significantly less on search engines. The family room was adequate and met our needs. At first, it was a bid odd to have the adults' sleeping area combined with the living room with the children in the separate bedroom. It had that sleeper sofa feel to it, but it was nice to have the kids sectioned off in their own space while we had the rest of the room after they went to sleep.

We did have several maintenance problems with our room. The air conditioning stopped working after a few days and after many calls to reception and multiple visits from maintenance that didn't resolve the problem, we were moved to a different room that had a damp musky smell to it. We decided just to deal with it since it took several hours for the hotel to move us to another room and we didn't want to go through that again. They did send us a nice fruit platter the next morning. We also had to make several calls to maintenance to repair the safe that kept shorting out throughout the week.

The breakfast buffet is really nice and generous, but service was a bit slow. I was often sat at tables without silverware or napkins. The evening buffets are similar to the breakfast buffet, but are very expensive! It was significantly cheaper to order room service than the buffet. The a la carte restaurants are about the same price as the buffet, but you need to make reservations in advance. The one night we did have dinner at the buffet, both of my children were sick with what appeared to be food poisoning the following morning. The on-site med clinic was helpful and provided medication to help with the vomitting. They were fine by the afternoon.

The property was tastefully decorated with a long beautiful stretch of beach. The staff at the kids club is excellent and my children enjoyed their time with the staff, but it was a bid sad that other parents didn't use the kids club. We'd been at several similar hotels and the kids club is generally crawling with children, but my kids seemed to be the only children there most of the time and they were looking forward to being with other kids.

The hotel is a bit hard to find. It gives it a secluded feel, but if you are renting a car and coming in at night, it is very difficult to get there. The entrance/lobby is also not easily identified at night. I think most people opt to hire taxis and airport transfers, but the costs for that are also significantly more in Mauritius - thus, I opted to rent a car myself. Has nothing to do with the hotel, but just wanted to include it for those who prefer to rent a car instead of using taxis so they can be prepared or take a daytime arrival if that is an option.

In hindsight, I probably would have preferred to try my luck with another hotel than this one.

Room Tip: Ground floor have direct access to the beach, but more bugs.

My wife and I stayed at the Intercontinental for two weeks in September 2013. We had an excellent and enjoyable stay at the hotel and the service provided was outstanding from everyone. The hotel was able to accommodate our specific dietary requirements due to food intolerances and this was communicated across the hotel. From the moment we arrived to the time we left, everyone made us feel at home and after meeting members of management and staff felt like part of the family. The hotel is very nice and has up to date contemporary rooms which are very nice. I had a room close to the boat house and small heated pool which I used every morning. I would definitely recommend this hotel and will be looking to go back there for our next visit.
There are too many names to mention but our thanks go out to the following:
Kevin and the whole Segala team.
Kevin ensured that our dietary requirements were taken care of so that our holiday could be hassle free, providing excellent meals and surprises at meal times. The whole team were very friendly and professional. Ditto for Nick and Wesley at Noble House. All of our dining experiences were great including Senso (Reena) and Veda, everyone went out of their way to ensure we were okay. The hotel has a great team with many characters and it is refreshing to say hello and have good banter with everyone from the gardening staff, housekeeping to management. Sanjay had a big part to play by ensuring our dietary requirements were echoed across the hotel. We were also able to celebrate a birthday and anniversary at the hotel restaurant thanks to Sunjay and Kevin hosting our groups from outside of the hotel.
Kevin Rittoo & Noor,
They provided great advice, directions, suggestions and altogether very helpful, we also used the hotel Limo service to take us to and from a Wedding where the driver waited at the wedding, took us to the reception and waited until we were ready to be taken back to the hotel.
Patrice and Olivier from the Gym, they offered advice and tips on training at the gym to get the best out of workouts. This was really good compared to other gyms I have used where you are just left to get on with what you are doing.

Room Tip: All rooms are nice, however for me I wanted to be away from the nightly activities and noise and hen...

We've just left after spending 7 nights at this hotel. Overall a positive experience with a few sour notes.

We arrived in the early evening but our room wasn't ready. This in itself wasn't a big problem as we were given a brief tour of the hotel, visiting an example of the type of room we had booked, the class above featuring an identical room with an adjoining private jacuzzi terrace and the presidential suite. This was a shrewd move on the part of the hotel as we immediately paid to upgrade to the room with the private terrace.

The hotel has several restaurants, but being on half board we mainly stuck to the main restaurant, save for one night we ate at the Thai restaurant "noble house" which was ok but nothing special. Generally there was a decent variety of food in the main restaurant catering to most palates, with a different theme each night. The first night the bottle of wine we had ordered arrived as we were finishing our main course. For the rest of the week the service in the restaurant was patchy, sometimes very attentive and at others leaving us feeling forgotten. This was true of the service throughout the hotel. E.g. We had booked an excursion which meant us leaving the hotel at 6:30, half an hour before the restaurant opens for breakfast. We duly filled in the in-room breakfast card and left it hanging outside the door in the evening, only to find it there at 6:15 the next morning. When I complained to the reception the receptionist managed to have a packed breakfast rustled up within about 10 minutes.

We found the service in the pool bar area generally better, but this could be because they had a smaller amount of ground to cover. The bar staff were also generous with the drinks;)

A couple of gripes. There was decent free Internet reception in the communal areas for normal browsing, but the in the rooms Internet had to be paid for in advance. On the two occasions I did pay the speed was so slow as to be unworkable so don't bother. The minibar in the rooms is unstocked. Guests have the option of pre-paying rather than paying as they consume. I would strongly advise bringing your own duty free as the prices for whiskey such as johnny walker black label are exorbitant to vergeing on daylight robbery.

One thing to be aware of which is not really the hotel's fault is the amount of flies. These aren't Mosquitos but were buzzing around us in such great numbers to drive us crazy.

With regards to touring the island, we booked the holiday through trailfinders and their local representatives were White Sands tours. We met the rep on the first day at the hotel and she sold us the South Island tour. I'm glad we didn't book the isle de cerfs or the dolphin experience tour through them as we booked exactly the same tours later with the crystal tours rep wandering the public beach for at least 1000 rupees cheaper each. If you are going to do one tour and one tour only I highly recommend the dolphin experience, swimming with a large school of dolphins in the wild.

Room Tip: Private terrace with jacuzzi is a good choice for couples
