“Luxury camping on the Red Sea”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2012

My husband and I spent 9 days at Roots Camp in September 2012. It's a perfect place for divers with Pharoah Dive Centre right on site. Even though my husband and I are inexperienced divers, we were made to feel welcome and Pharoah Dive Club went out of their way to make sure each dive was a good experience for us.

We opted for the full board plan which provided three meals a day. Food was very good, varied and plentiful. We stayed in the Eco Huts which provide economical, very basic, clean accommodations with shared bathrooms. We were very comfortable, thinking of it as luxury camping. If you want a little more comfort (e.g. a/c and private ensuite,TV, safe), I recommend you stay in one of the chalets.

When we weren't diving, we were relaxing on the beach which is a short walk from the camp. There's a beautiful house reef that is great for both snorkelling and diving. This is a perfect place to get away from it all - it is peaceful and remote, yet only a quick 10 minute drive to town if you need anything.

There is reliable WiFi available from the main restaurant, which is the place where everyone gathers at the end of the day, making for a very friendly, fun atmosphere. We had a BBQ and bonfire on the beach one night, Bedouin style, under the stars. Amazing.

One of the best things about this place are the managers, Steve and Clare. They are relaxed and laid back but very attentive to their guests' needs. They went out of their way to help us out with some of our travel needs, and always welcomed us to hitch a ride with them into town whenever we wanted. We had a great time at Roots Camp - great people, comfortable accommodations, excellent food, superb diving team, wonderful location - all the ingredients are there for a chilled back, enjoyable diving holiday. It's no wonder most of their clients are repeat business!

Hi Steve and Clare (and the whole team too!)
Just a short note to say a massive thank you for your hospitality (again) and the amazing diving!
The whole group loved every bit of our stay with you. The service was as always, great, with a 'nothing is too much to ask for' attitude. The food was excellent, particularly the last lunch and the chilli peppers, and the beach BBQ - what a way to spend an evening!

The new accommodation is excellent too - clean, comfortable, and way above anyones expectations from the 'Camp' word in your title! This is a superb resort, and perfect for us divers! Bring on the pool in November!

The diving - well organised, and well executed with great briefings and guides who are supportive and very observant, yet unobtrusive at the same time.

We loved Serib Kebir and the House Reef at Roots, particularly at night. 7 Spanish Dancers, a star-gazer, turtle sleeping (thanks Moudy!) several sea-moths, anemone crabs and a whole host of other beasties to boot - this is how the Red Sea was 20 years ago!

Of particular note too was the very reasonably priced excursions to Elphinstone and the Salem Express - both phenomenal dive sites. Diving the house reef on an unlimted basis was excellent value too, and The Rock - what a site - we have never seen so many anemones in one place anywhere in the world!

Most impressive however was the Cavern Course we did with you. This has to be the best dive course ever, and I would strongly recommend it to anyone who is serious about becoming a serious diver - the safety principles therein can be applied to any sort of diving, and your patient instruction manner was exemplary.

Leaving on Friday was like saying goodbye to family, such was our experience. We are coming back, and in bigger numbers too! Delighted that you can accommodate large groups as we have 20 or so people interested in a January 2013 trip!

Many thanks to you ALL!

Room Tip: Go for the Roots Deluxe Chalets - twin rooms, air conditioning, en-suite bathrooms, and plenty of po...

If you are a diver, don't bother going anywhere other than Roots Camp, and Pharoah Dive Club!, Steve, Claire and all the other staff are there for you to get the best experience possible. There are numerous sites to dive; from pristine reefs, eerie caverns, deep walls and even wrecks. Marine life is abundant, along with those close experiences that you can only hope for, Dolphins and Turtles, most days (YouTube; Red Sea Dolphins and Puffer fish), also Eagle Rays, White Tip Oceanic Shark at Elphinstone, and more. Great Night dives and all expertly guided or you can just dive with your buddy. Great House reef for all-day snorkelling and diving. There is enough here to keep you diving for weeks.
Accomadation- Chalets, air con, TV, comfortable beds what more do you want? What you don't get elsewhere is the great company, before, during, and after diving, guests, and staff eat together, drink together, BBQ together, which leads to a great atmosphere and a really enjoyable, relaxing time. Where else would you get a fresh BBQ waiting for you after a night dive, along with a cold beer of your choice.
Don't bother looking for anywhere else.

We went to the Roots Camp and it is just perfect for divers. You'll find all you need, quite reasonable rooms: good beds, air conditioning, TV & Sat, Safe, and ok bathroom with shower. It's not a 5star hotel room, but good enough for divers that seek a nice and cheap place to stay. The camp itself is wonderful, lies on the edge of a desert, 500m from the Roots Beach and Abu Sautir, the House reef. The food was excellent, you don't have lots of choice, but we never had a complaint, on the contrary.
The Pharaoh Dive Club, is to be recommended when going in that region, and it is the dive center of the camp. Lovely staff, really kind owners. It's the 3rd time we went there and it's not going to be the last. Very professional and responsible instructor and courses.
Dive sites in the region are amazing.
All in all, perfect for divers.

We stayed in the Roots Camp for 17 days, and we enjoyed it very much. The rooms are small but very nice. The AC und the freezer are very cold:-) The staff is absolutly friendly. You only have to relax and dive. The meals are delicious and we enjoyed our trip to the Roots Camp. We will come back for sure. Many greetings to everybody inthe Camp from Germany.

I can only reiterate what others have found, when they have stayed and dived with Pharaoh Divers and stayed at their 'camp'. It is very comfortable, with genuinly friendly staff, an excellent chef, the food is plentiful and always freshly cooked, peaceful, quiet, (no discos). The rooms are basic but very clean and comfortable and you have the choice of eco with a fan and communal bathroom or de luxe, with air con and en suite. I had the latter and found it very comfortable and clean, the room boys did'nt skimp on their duties. the diving was as ever great and varied, although the visability could have been better, no falt of Pharaohs. As someone who was taught to always look after ones kit, I had no troubles letting the staff clean, (not just dipped in the tank) and pack my kit for the next day, they were very good. I was only there for a week, but because the pace is unhuried it felt like longer.
In closing the best sumation would be to say, its has everything a diver would want, without the hassle. A real divers holiday, run by divers for divers with everything one used to expect from a English company. Would I go back again? definitely.

In June 2012 my husband and I booked a trip to go with Pharaoh Dive Club El Quseir Roots Camp on a Red Sea Dive Safari. We had stayed previously at Roots Camp twice in 2011 where we had a wonderful time diving 3 and 4 times a day. We began with arriving from the airport where we were picked up by a Pharaoh Dive Club employee. 60 minutes later we arrived at Roots Camp were we were welcomed and briefed on the Safari. The next day we left to go to the boat (My Mermid II) in Hamata where we were welcomed and briefed again along with a dinner. There were twin cabins and single cabins available with toilet, vanity and shower in every room. Also two flex hose showers on the back of the boat to fit whatever needs you have (example: hosing off large cameras). Accommodations were great. Dining area, sun deck, sitting area and below diving equipment and large area for putting on your equipment. There were boat crew members who were always looking to see if you needed any help with anything. We stayed 6 nights and the time just flew bye. Food was great and the sphere was fantastic. We even had a Bar-B-Q on an island one evening. With a group of French, Germans, British, and Dutch people we all had a great time. We visited 15 dive sites and some were done twice due to night dives or we just wanted to dive the same spot again. All the dive sites were in pristine condition and these ranged from wrecks, lagoons, caverns, and coral islands. So many different types of fish and corals. Sharks are not seen everywhere in Egypt but you are more likely to run into turtles, moray eels, dolphins, blue spotted rays, Napoleons or a dugong. At the end of the safari we were brought back to Roots Camp where we could eat lunch, rest out in an air conditioned room and take a shower before we had to go back to the airport. All our equipment that we brought with was well taken care of and dry by the time we were ready to leave. Renting equipment at Roots Camp is not a problem and have seen that it was all in good condition.

Room Tip: Ask for a chalet.
