I first learned of Ridin Hy from my Mom who took my nieces (skilled horseback riders) up to the ranch for a long weekend. They loved the entire experience and went back several more times. Finally I decided two years ago it was time to bring my own kids (7 years old at the time) to visit the ranch.
We've been up to Ridin Hy in both the summer and winter months. Each time the kids loved it. This is the first resort that I've been to where I felt safe letting the kids wander on their own. There are many different activities (kickball, softball, tennis, shuffleboard) to keep them busy.
If you are interested in horseback riding - the trail rides will keep you busy in the summer. In the winter months we had a blast riding the ski mobiles and skiing the slopes (we're beginner skiers but the slopes looked like they've be good for intermediate and below). The recreation director taught my daughter to ski and took her down the slope once. After that she was on her own and skiing repeatedly down the hill without any problems.
One big thing to remember (and to me this is part of the attraction of Ridin Hy) is that you're coming to a resort with no locks on the cabins, no TV in the cabins (main lodge has a TV), no air conditioning, no telephones in the cabins.
The meals were good. Nothing fancy and you're typically served by a college student. The one suggestion I'd have is to tighten up the kitchen staff a bit because it can be difficult to get served some nights and we never have quite figured out the reason.
If there is a fisherman in your family - come prepared to catch fish. The first time I was ever at Ridin Hy my daughter pulled up her line and a 2 lb smallmouth bass was on the other end. People regularly catch fish of that size (and bigger) right from the dock. Paddleboat and rowboats are available free of charge for those who want to fish the lake.
My kids look forward to Ridin Hy and the family atmosphere can't be beat. Highly recommended.
