When in Troy, our best bet has been the River Street Cafe. The chef owner performs well- the food is excellent. There is a wide choice in appetizers; the foods change seasonally with what is available in the markets. Downstairs, the chef works in an open kitchen, the tables are upstairs. There is a view of the Hudson River from the back windows. In our most recent visit, we had swordfish in a pepper sauce, a crab cake in a remoulade sauce, and strip steak in brown butter sauce. All were as good as NYC. A salad comes with every dinner. The chef has been trying Asian flavors of late, noted in the free salad which seemed similar to a Thai salad, and we also has pasta in a spicy sauce. The latter was an offering to compensate for the wait. The food is excellent, but you must be willing to be patient. Dinner can last two hours. The main reason is that the restaurant is a two person show-- one chef-owner and one waiter, with some help from a runner to bring the food upstairs. So you should never schedule anything else after dinner at the River Street Cafe. Always make reservations, since you need them on weekend nights, and on one occasion, we called at 7:45 about dinner that night, to be told that the owner was closing at 8 PM. Assuming that you can be tolerant of a bit of individuality, this is an excellent restaurant. Good beer and wine choices.
