4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2012

Location -excellent both at check-in and check-out.
Reception -excellent and welcoming.
Room-adequate.
Service in bar/restaurant - not so good. Brought wrong dessert with no hint of apology.
Breakfast servive by Eva -truly excellent.
Price - very good. (Old English Inns promotion via Daily Mail)
Would happily use this hotel again.

Room Tip: Ask for a twin room

Apart from the fact that one person on reception has to cover two windows, the front of house, bar area, staff and meals were/are very good.
The problem came with the room, at first sight it appeared OK, so we unpacked. Took the extra pillows down to use, one was really sweat stained and no pillow slips. Took the cases off the pillows on the bed and one of those pillows was worse than the extra one, complaint to reception resulted in those being changed satisfactorily.
Laid on the bed for a nap, looked up at the light bowl, full of dead flies.
Dirty marks on carpet and smelled of urine.
Toilet brush clogged with excrement and holder filthy.
Tiling in shower area dirty.
Shower knob incomplete and no instructions.
Shower curtain too small and water flowed all over window cill.
Cold tap on sink difficult to turn off.
Mirror over sink insecure.

One of these defects would have been overlooked, but together they made for a lousy room, the only consolation was that the deputy manager claimed not to know anything about the defects, and waived the room fee for the night.

Room Tip: Do not choose 12

The Riverside Hotel had an enviable reputation as a privately run hotel in the 1970/80's as a high class quality silver service restaurant, Oh what a change. A table for 2 was booked for 7:30pm on a Saturday evening as a taster for us booking our Christmas dinner with them. We were informed when booking we were told that a wedding was taking place on that evening, but we would be given a table the furthest distance to the reception to minimise the noise. Expectation was high and we dressed smart casual for an enjoyable evening. On arrival at the hotel the car park was scruffy as some old carpet and building debris had been deposited in the corner, on entering the hotel, a large notice welcomed and congratulating the bride and groom on their wedding. On entering the bar, we were confronted by trays of wedding cake, on ordering a drink we were offered a piece of wedding cake, refusing and explaining we had booked a table for dinner and we were told the wedding group had made alternative arrangements. We went onto the patio to be confronted by plant pots full of cigarette ends flowing on to the tables, we picked up a card menu from in the bar, the menu being split between the 2 mains for £9.95 and the not dissimilar al a carte menu on the reverse. We were shown to our table directly adjacent to the the bar, a small square oak table with no cloth, place mats, glasses, napkins, cutlery, or condiments by a pleasant Eastern European lady. We were well overdressed for the restaurant, other customers wearing jeans and T shirts and the noise of jokes and raucous laughter from the next table only punctuated by quick breaks to the patio for them to indulge in having a cigarette. Our waitress, one of two worked tirelessly running between the tables and taking our order, the second waitress enjoyed watching the action, a wine list was never produced. The food was less than average, being supplied with a paper napkin and cutlery with each course. The oil used in the cooking dominated in odor and flavour over the meal ingredients, I rejected the offer of ketchup with my steak! We terminated the meal without a sweet, realizing this was second class pub food being sold as a pretense of restaurant food/environment, the decision not to book our Christmas dinner came easily.

Room Tip: We were only using the restaurant, not the hotel or its facilities.

Stayed at this 'English Inn' on business in September 2012. Not impressed at all. Checked in - but beware the difference in elevation between the front and rear of the reception desk - you will be looking the top of the recptionist's head as they're standing a foot below you. It's a very odd feeling.

The hotel is a two-storey seventies motel-style building attached to a nice old English pub restaurant. I didn't eat in the restaurant in the evening, but from what I saw it looked pretty good.

Allocated Room 11, which turned out to be a small tatty cell above the lobby and with the stairs to one side, guaranteeing a sleepless night puctuated by drunken rowdiness and general clattering about. It had a single bed with some rather nasty old bedlinen and a strange window arrangement that featured a postbox draught excluder in the frame to allow the window handle to be used. It's so odd I photographed it!

The WC and bathroom were separate rooms. The shower was over the bath, but the bath itself was so flimsy it flexed badly when I stood on it, which might account for the extra row of tiles around the edge of the bath and the double row of mastic. The back of the bath tap/shower had lots of black mould, which should have been easy to remove if they'd wanted to. Pic attached.

The breakfast service was fine - one pleasant young lady covering all the residents, but explaining she might be a bit slow as she wasn't the regular waitress. I went for the kippers, which although advertised as 'grilled' looked like they were either microwaved or boiled in a bag, with a vaguely fluorescent colour, no texture or hint of anything as natural as skin or bones. And they were tiny with it. The poached egg was OK.

Overall, desperately disappointing after a day at work and I won't be rushing to repeat it.

Room Tip: Not Room 11!

Stayed here 2 nights in August, found hotel staff very friendly and helpfull. food was excellent and good value. our room was the superior room actually in the hotel. this room has a lovely bathroom and nice views over river. there was a small smell of drains in this room from shower i told them about this and they said they will sort it out. also room could be a little cleaner around the edges dusting etc, although you do find this in several hotels, give your cleaning staff more time to clean. that aside we did enjoy our stay in this hotel

Room Tip: Choose room with river views

My husband and I had a very pleasant overnight stop at this hotel last week, despite the damp weather! (don't overshoot the turning - turn L shortly after 30mph sign when heading west on B5018, Burton Rd, into Warren Lane, then turn L again)
Lovely location, right next to the river - in fact our room (no 8) on the ground floor had a good view of the riverside, swans and geese. Nice touch was that the window had a bug guard to stop any unwanted "visitors" into our room when we opened it. Room was "compact" but adequate for our needs, clean, fresh and quiet, with a very comfortable bed and functional bathroom (rather narrow). There was a lovely riverside walk (both ways) which we availed ourselves of both before and after dinner. If you take a long walk to the left you will end up by a lovely footbridge across the river to a wonderful park at Stapenhill (see pics)
Meals were delicious and excellent value (we took advantage of the Old English 2 mains for just under £10) . Breakfast was tasty with additional choices of cooked as is usual with Old English,(My husband has his usual full English; I had my favourite, smoked salmon with scrambled eggs) although there were not quite so many choices of fresh fruit and pastries as usual at the chain - perhaps because we stayed mid-week and it was very quiet. The plus was that breakfast was included in the reasonable price - somethiing which is becoming increasingly rare! Staff were cheerful, helpful and attentive at reception, in the restaurant and in the corridors (particularly Alice who even remembered our names! A first for us I believe)
All in all a very pleasant stay. The proof is that we intend to stay there next time we are in the area.

Room Tip: Rooms on riverside do overlook the patio, so might be a little noisy on a hot "summer?" ev...

What a shame that the owners Greene King don't invest a little bit on the decor as the pictures will show, this hotel has the potential of being absolutely fantastic due to location etc but is spoiled by this lack of attention to detail. Unfortunately a lovely breakfast was also spoiled by the fact they lost our order and we watched as others got served an dwe were ignored, when we asked we were told that our order definitely went through to the kitchen but was nowhere to be seen, to make matters worse they must have put us to the back of the queue as we still waited another 10 minutes on top of the already 30 we had waited. Glad we paid the discounted rate as part of a wedding party otherwise would have been more upset. The plus side is that the bed, bedding etc was clean and extremely comfortable although as others have said the bathroom was tiny but adequate, best way to describe the rooms is bijou and compact but the views of river make it worthwhile. Had an excellent pub lunch on the Saturday £9.95 for two and the drinks were reasonably priced for a hotel

Room Tip: Ask for riverside view, the car park isn't that exciting
