“What a wonderful museum.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2011

The permanent collection of ceramics is varied and ranges from very old to modern. The special exhibits that we caught were photography and ceramic. Enjoyed this museum !

“Loved the ceramics gallery.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2011

Loved the ceramics gallery.
The museum bldg. is famed architect I. M. Pei's first commission - love the building and how the sunlight and different textures affect its interior space on the main level.

“Disappointment – too many photography restrictions”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2011

I stopped by the Everson Museum because of its design by I.M Pei. The first problem is the operating hours which are very short (noon to 5 on most days). Then they don’t have parking. Actually they do, but not for visitors. I parked in a pay garage ½ block South which was reasonable. The museum entrance is hidden to the West side, and the lobby of the museum is spectacular and you are allowed to take pictures in the lobby…only. The first floor of the museum has just a couple of galleries and the art was not impressive. What appeared to be a library in back was in disrepair. The second floor has four large galleries including one with modern art which was worth a stop, but overall, the art was ordinary. Two of the galleries on the second floor are now reserved for special exhibitions, which interrupts the flow from gallery to gallery as I.M. Pei had intended. The basement has a large amount of ceramics and china, but it is more like a warehouse than an art gallery, with very low ceilings and tight spaces. If you like ceramics you will love it, there is a great deal on display.
Overall, I found the Everson disappointing. While the upstairs had impressive galleries, the first floor and basement were confusing and not really that interesting. The building does not appear to be well maintained and several of the concrete walls have been painted, which I don’t think I.M Pei would approve of. The strict photography policy is pretty annoying. If you are in Syracuse, it is worth a stop, but I would not make a special trip just for this museum.
