We've travelled through Syracuse a number of times on the interstate. Apart from stopping at the Carousel/Destiny mall we have given the city a "pass" because it appears neglected when seen from the interstate. This time we were interested in the canal museum and ventured downtown on an early Sunday afternoon. What a surprise! The area around the museum is really worth a visit.
The museum itself provides a real learning experience. Housed in the only remaining weigh-lock it provides a history of the Erie canal from concept thorough execution and operation. The interactive simulation of operating the weigh-lock is very well done. The walk through of a typical canal boat tops off the visit. The second floor of the building offers a look at life during the highpoint of canal operations and the significance of the canal to the development of Syracuse.
Parking on the same side as the museum is limited but appears to be free on the other side of the street under the freeway. The $5.00 suggested donation is very reasonable. We hope to visit this area of Syracuse again in the future.
