Portobello Cafe stands to be one of my favorite Staten Island restaurants and most certainly the best spot in the Eltingville area. This place has been around for years and I bypassed it for the longest time up until about eight years ago when I went on a weekday to try the two for one entree special. While I had a great experience on this visit, I never managed to return until five or so years later. Since then I've made around fifteen additional trips to Portobello, all of which have been nothing short of fantastic.
For starters, the food is consistently terrific with special props paid to the extremely extensive menu. The regular dinner menu is remarkable and features more selections than the majority of Staten Island's Italian eateries. In addition, the kitchen offers numerous specials each night as well as a two for one entree menu offered certain days of the week. The two for one menu in itself is plenty large and the portions of which appear to be no different than the regular menu options. That being said, you really can't beat the value here. There was one occasion where my fiancé and I ordered a set price dinner which included two appetizers, two entrees, two deserts and a bottle of red or white wine. This is a great option, and while the entire menu isn't available in this case there is again plenty to choose from; with the staff occasionally willing to accommodate minor substitutions. In general, there are several items that I would recommend from the menu here including their Linguini with Clam Sauce(I prefer the white), Mom's Sunday Dinner and the Roasted Stuffed Chicken breast with smoked mozzarella, andouille sausage over freshly prepared risotto.
The devoted service at Portobello Cafe is also noteworthy. On a whole, the service moves but this is by no means the kind of place that rushes patrons out the door in anticipation for massive table flips. They usually draw a solid crowd, but I never feel like the place is jammed packed where the staff works to accomplish substantial turnovers by moving people in and out promptly. This is a place where you can get comfortable and linger for a bit, not to the point where you intend to tie up their table all evening but there's never a sense of pressure that you’re taking too long. Additionally, the staff is quite friendly and attentive to all needs.
Portobello's decor is very comfortable. The environment is clean and well kept. The tables are spaced far enough apart where you can conduct a private conversation and not worry about others hearing you. The acoustics are kept to a comfortable level and the lighting is generally dim, which adds to the appeal of the mini candles placed as table centerpieces. On some visits, I even noticed an organ player performing in the corner although I tend to tune such activity out when I'm out at places.
To sum everything up, Portobello is an absolutely awesome restaurant. I've enjoyed several evenings here most of which were nothing short of excellent. I would recommend this place to anyone interested in well prepared Italian cuisine for a terrific price. Perhaps I enjoy Portobello as much as I do because it's very close to where I live but that should not stop anyone from paying this spot a visit; it is worth the trip.
