If you are visiting NYC, you are probably staying in Manhattan. But this great city has five boroughs, and you should visit more than one.
The best free ride in America - the Staten Island Ferry - drops you just a three-minute walk from this excellent restaurant, where the chef de cuisine each night is one of a rotating team of real Italian grandmothers. The food is as good as you would expect from an Italian grandmother, and the wine is both carefully curated and affordable. The atmosphere is informal and welcoming. The owner is very hands-on and the place has a good following of regulars (not everyone arrives on the ferry).
I would say that Enoteca Maria is "worth the trip," except that in this case the trip is not a negative at all. It's part of the package.
The restaurant is open Wednesday through Sunday nights and is cash only - but there is a Sovereign Bank ATM right next door. The menu changes every day and is always posted on the restaurant's informative website.
