“Pros and cons of the Southampton Inn”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2013

I came here recently on an off-season weekend in April. I was here once before during high-season two years ago.

The positives of this property are the fact that it is walking distance to town, which means you don't have to have a car while staying here, and if you do, you can avoid parking issues in town. The shuttle to the beach is invaluable, since parking is for permit-holders only. The shuttle only runs during peak summer months, however. The double queen room I stayed in was quite comfortable. I especially liked the bedding. I didn't have any problems with noise from other rooms or outside (as other reviewers mentioned), but I think that has to do with the fact that I wear earplugs while sleeping, and the inn was not full while I was there. I also stayed in a second floor room, so I didn't have to deal with any early morning or late night noise from above. The receptionist who checked me in was very pleasant. The garden is very pretty as is the library.

Some negatives included the lack of electrical outlets in the room. There were very few that were accessible. The WIFI was almost unusable. The price is high. I was surprised to pay the same amount of money for a room during off-season that I paid during high-season two years ago, but perhaps the prices have risen altogether since then. I still think that $200 (without tax) per night is quite a lot to pay during low-season, especially since the shuttle to the beach is not up and running yet, nor is the onsite restaurant, the pool is not yet open, etc. The cancellation policy is very strict, which could be understandable during the busiest months, but not during low-season. Finally, the check-in time of 4 p.m. is annoying.

I might stay here again, because the town is so nice and Cooper's Beach is so nice, but I might not.

Really liked this hotel. We were very comfortable and traveling with 2 kids. The room was quite large and the kids slept on the pull out couch. The location is convenient to everything and we enjoyed our walk to dinner. We would definitely stay here again. Very clean, great friendly staff and pleasant.

Thank you for your kind comments. The Southampton Inn is the only full service hotel in town
including a seasonal heated swimming pool,a tennis court and a beautiful ballroom So many of our guests do enjoy our location within walking distance of the town center and being only 1 mile from the beach.

If you are looking to be woken up at 5:30 in the morning this is the place for you. It is clear that as there are very few places to stay this "INN" does not care about customer service or even being honest with it's clients. We were put in a room with two other rooms that had one door to the outside hall way. Everytime the door opened it literally shook the bed. The door opened 15 times between 5 & 6 am when the cable people were leaving (as the hotel knew they would be). When we discussed this with them they said that they never had a noise problem. We were moved to another room which there was one room above us, which was a family. At 6 am it sounded like a tumbling gym was in full force. Clearly the hotel is extremely poorly built, not at all suited for what it is. The manager instead of working hard to make sure there were suitable people in adjacent rooms said she knew nothing of a noise problem, and offered us free breakfast. As we were checking out another couple was asked if their new room was better with less noise!!!!
If this hotel was anywhere else it would be out of business.
The rooms are not bad with comfortable beds, but unfotunately you dont get much sleep in them.

I would recommend a near by bread and breakfast (not so great if you need more than one bed)or the hamlet inn where some of our family stayed and it was cheaper, sparse but clean and quiet.

We at the Southampton Inn regret you did not enjoy your stay with us and that you’ve found the other guest rooms to be noisy. It is our goal that every guest enjoys his or her stay. Our inn is historic therefore the rooms may not be as sound proofed as you are personally accustomed to. We encourage our guests to make us aware prior to check-in their personal needs such as being a light sleeper or sensitivity to noise so we may best accommodate you.

Hope you like noise. Fully expected this place to be great given its location, but it was anything but. The owner is rude. The breakfast is overpriced and not well prepared. You can get a glass of orange juice not much bigger than a shot glass for $4. Beware of their breakfast buffet which was nothing more than cereal or scrambled eggs. No beverage included. The rooms are incredibly noisy with their paper thin walls. Had to complain numerous times about the noise. The stairs in each buiding, just outside everyones doors are wooden and creaky. The housekeeping service left a lot to be desired. They couldn't even replace a bar of soap. Had a co-worker stay in a much nicer and much less expensive ($40 a night cheaper) hotel that included free brekfast. Wish I had done some more research first before spending an outrageous amount for a place I would NEVER stay at again...EVER.

Room Tip: Look at other nearby hotels.

Our apologies that you did not enjoy your stay with us. It is our mission that every guest enjoys his or her stay. We gladly take your suggestions for our continental breakfast under consideration and revision. We understand that our $3.00, 6 oz glass of orange juice may not be to your liking. If you would like to have a larger glass please feel free to ask so that we may accommodate you. In addition we find it rather odd that our concrete stairs made creaky noises and we hope it did not disturb you. We will most definitely have our maintenance professionals investigate the stairs. We can only suggest that you share your comments with us during your stay so that we may address them at that time and make your stay more enjoyable.

The Southampton Inn is older but well located in the town of Southampton, easy walking distance to beaches, center of town and restaurants. The Inn does not have room service and the interiors are a little dated, the beds are Tempur-Pedic and are comfortable. The bathrooms are small and dated and do show age, but they are clean.

The Inn's restaurant is only open for breakfast during the off season, but there are plenty of places to eat in the area.

The room does not have a coffee maker in the room, it is served in the lobby in the mornings. The also does not have iron or ironing board in the rooms you need to ask the front desk to have one delivered to the room.

Another tip, if you need dark rooms to sleep bring a sleep mask, most room only have slated blinds and no dark out drapes. Also bring ear plugs, you can hear people in the other rooms and doors slamming people talking etc.

The free WiFi at the Inn is sub-par, you know when other guest are using it or trying to use it. The WiFi is very slow drops the connection or does not allow you to get onto the internet, this happens mostly in the evenings.

The staff is very friendly and helpful.

Would I stay there again, maybe. Depends on the cost of the room, paid $1,700.00 for 4 nights. Since it was business and needed a place to stay that was the choice, but very pricy for for the accommodations.

Room Tip: Try to get a room on the 2nd floor with a court yard view (swimming pool or patio side), the parking...

Thank you for staying with us at the Southampton Inn. Overall we hope you enjoyed your stay with us. In summary it would seem that you enjoyed the overall quality of the room including the Tempur-Pedic beds, the cleanliness and maintenance of the room, and that we offer all the other amenities but not at your fingertips. It is our goal that our guests have to do as little as possible during their stay. Our vision is for our guests not to make their coffee for themselves but for us to prepare a comforting coffee reception in the lobby or in the lounge of Oso, our restaurant. If our Wifi connection is operating at a slower capacity please let us know so we may have our maintenance professionals investigate that for you. If needed we do offer a business center with complimentary guest access in our lobby. It is our goal that every guest enjoys his or her stay. Thank you so much for this useful feedback, it is necessary for our growth and betterment.
