“Most Expensive Food Meets Comic Service”

The setting is pretty, and then everything else is down hill from there. The prices are the highest of any restaurant known, with soups and salads in the $30's and $40's, and entrées in the $60's and $70's. The typical cocktails run $18 to $30. The food is average at best, and sparse portions only enhance the insulting pricing. The service is like a comedy routine, with scant dressed female assistant servers standing everywhere, and male servers dressed in black suits standing at attention on top of the few customers eating. The restaurant was empty at 8:30 PM on a Saturday night in August 2008, as the "word” is out that this restaurant is the biggest joke of Southampton. Dinner for two, that included 3 cocktails, one shared salad, and one fish entre each, with no potatoes, no vegetables, no wine, no desert and no coffee, was over $300. “Avoid at all costs”

Where does one begin? With the interminable wait for a table booked a week in advance? the chaotic service? the sub-standard food? The Euro-trash wannabe crowd? (Do people actually aspire to be Eurotrash?).... Nello’s is one those Madison Avenue institutions that have lasted for years on a mysterious combination of location, charm and a “ladies who lunch” scene (Euros again). Its summer outpost in Southampton is a pleasant space, especially outdoors. Inside is also nice but it hasn’t decided what it wants to be. Is it a restaurant, a lounge, a club? It wants to be all things to all people and ends up being really bad at everything. It’s so much of a scene that people refuse to leave their tables after their dinners to make way for newly arrived customers. So the crowds pile on top of each other, the staff are harassed and abused, the food takes forever to show up… and all along Nello and his latest piece of arm candy sit at their table oblivious to the zoo around them.. Once seated – inside although we had booked an outside table – the “fun” began. It was almost surreal: Our waiter appeared with a few napkins and no silverware. We had to wait 20 minutes for glasses and for him to take our wine order. Then I grabbed him and refused to let him go back to the kitchen without taking our dinner order. The table next to ours claimed that they’d been waiting 3 HOURS for their food. They could’ve driven into NYC for dinner instead! When our food finally arrived, it was not worth the wait. My artichoke salad was OK, but my pasta with clams was dull and watery. Everyone else said their food was substandard. Overcrowded, understaffed… with a tacky crowd to boot. The next day on the way to Schmidt’s Market we passed by it and rolled down our windows to boo and hiss! We were still traumatized. A friend called it PNTSD Post Nello’s Traumatic Stress Disorder

“Worst experience this decade”

...seriously... easily the worst personal experience I've had since the millenium began (excluding 9/11). A 10:30PM reservation turned into a 1AM seating. Only half us got table settings - ever. A few of us got apps, but never the entrees. This while we were geting bumped in all directions by women of a certain age dressed inappropriately young with frozen botox foreheads and gross guys in sailor pants and slick back hair and big chunky watches. It was all a very agressive crowd. Agressively tragic.

The table next to us yelled at the waiter (they'd been there for three hours and never got their food). They got up and left. The table outside our window screamed too. Same issue. There was something about the chef wanting to leave - or did leave. Whatever.

It's a real shame. I love Nello's in Manhattan, and the place in Southampton is pretty - an old house retrofitted with an open space for restaurant, disco in the back and chill out area outside. But the management has to be the worst ever. A victim of it's own success, clearly, and of bad management. STAY AWAY AT ALL COSTS. EAT MCDONALD'S if you have to instead.
