The Golden Pear Cafe occupies a corner on the sunny side of the street in the heart of Southampton. This attractive cafe is painted pale yellow with white trim and features large windows that are shaded by dark green awnings.
This is a compact, deli-style, casual restaurant or "cafe" that offers a good variety of breakfast and lunch items. Breakfast offerings include omelets, waffles and oatmeal. The eggs I had on my latest visit were fresh and very good, and were simply but attractively served with a wedge of melon and some fruit. The baked goods and coffee are also good. The prices here are not inexpensive, but not outrageous either, especially when you consider the location.
The Golden Pear is a popular breakfast spot (I've never had lunch there) and it can become quite crowded. During my latest mid-week visit, the customers were casually attired. On a previous weekend visit, on a Saturday, the restaurant looked like a photo shoot for a Brooks Brothers catalog. Of course, that's just what you would expect in Southampton. And this makes the Golden Pear a good place to absorb some of the town's essential character. During the warmer months, you can also sit outside, if you are lucky enough to find a table.
