“I have never had a worst experience”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed May 30, 2010

I want to start off saying I have traveled all over the world and have stayed at many different hotels and b&b for my job in PR. I also go on trip advisor but never felt the need to write a review till now. I have never had such a disturbing and horrible experience till I stayed at 1708 House in South Hampton. The owners of the B&B are the most rude and hostile people I have ever met. My friend and I needed to extend our stay and they were happy to book us a room for an extra night. When the extra day came they said we never had the conversation and didn't know what we were talking about. We made the reservation face to face, we discussed rates and confirmed which room we would be taking. They wrote our names in front of us in the reservation book. When we nicely confronted them they got very abusive to the point I felt physically unsafe. Also, the day before we heard them in a screaming match with another guest over the phone denying knowledge of their reservation. They refused to let us have our belongings that were in our room and physically blocked me from getting my bags. These people are truly psychotic and deranged.
bottom line...southampton has been somewhere i have spent most summers through out my life. i can say its is a wonderful place to visit and i would not want anyone to have to encounter an experience with these lunatics.

We (my boyfriend and I, my mother and her friend) were delighted to have been so well-accomodated in the 1708 House on extremely short notice. Our particular desires and needs (dietary and otherwise) were attended to with plenty of grace and flexibility. The rooms are each charming and special, enticing one to explore them all. The house itself is quite a historic treat, as one can see from all the well-displayed centuries-old artifacts, and as we learned during an impromptu detailed, narrated tour by the proprietor. The wine cellar holds the secrets of many generations, apparently. We made a point to spend some time in each of the public rooms, furnished with books, nooks, fireplace, menus, and curiosities. The proprietors were available and personable, but unintrusive.

Breakfast was beautifully presented and fresh, and the little chocolates in the sitting rooms hit the spot before a nice run to the beach.

This place was an unexpectedly happy discovery.

I read the other reviews re: the lack of hospitality from the owners/staff. Skip & Lorraine (owners) are great, very friendly and want to get to know the guests. There was one blonde woman who was outright rude to us, we were (pretty quietly) checking out the living room fireplace at 10pm - she interrogated us to see if we belonged to be there. I'm guessing she was the one who took our phone reservation, which was also chilly.

We stayed in Room 8, which was "2nd Floor Deluxe". The room was gorgeous. All the furniture was beautifully restored and matching, the bathroom was really nice with full amenities. I have never seen such a clean bed and breakfast before, the attention to detail was amazing. The whole house has beautiful antiques and the walls has old newspaper clippings, it really was like a musuem. And the wine cellar was definitely the coolest part of the house, it's beautifully decorated and I have never seen anything like it before.

I stayed here from recommendation of NY Times travel guide - good choice! Great weekend, it was unseasonably warm and sunny this weekend and we drove out to East/Bridge Hampton for lunch and dinner

Would definitely recommend this place as an easy getaway from NYC for the weekend. I asked about the summer rates, they are astronomical - but that's the Hamptons. This place is really nice. They have some cottages in the back which would be great for families or a group of friends.

Tip: use the driving directions posted on their website (www.1708house.com), Google Maps gave us something different and we got lost. Also, check out nearby Fowler Beach which does not require permit or residence

Breakfast not that impressive, but they have a very nice spread of chocolate, cheese, fruits and coffee all day

We have sampled a number of bed and breakfasts in the area and I have to say that this was our worst experience by far.

1. In the main house, the walls are too thin. We could hear, in detail, the complete conversation of the guest above us. To the extent that we could hear the keypad beeps when he dialed a number on his cell phone.

2. On the 2nd night, we moved to a cottage next to the main house. Cobwebs were strewn across the living room and there was paper garbage and dust under the bed.

3. Worst of all was the lack of hospitality by the owner and staff. There are numerous examples, but the one that stands out was on the last day. We had checked out of the room and were finishing a board game downstairs in the main house before starting the trip home. This was shortly after the noon checkout time. The owner effectively asked us to leave immediately because we were past the noon checkout time.

I should also mention the arguments that we had to listen to between the husband and owner over what they should initially charge us for the room when we first checked in.

All the positive reviews of the B&B are true.....beautiful antiques, spotless rooms, charming wine cellar, delicious breakfast and close to everything. On our recent visit to Southampton, my husband and I decided to treat ourselves to this well respected B&B. We would like to let future guests thinking of spending a special occasion at the Inn of the problem we encountered. We arrived and checked into Room #5, a small, but adequate, room on the first floor. At 12:45 AM we were awakened by very loud noises from guests directly above our room. I called the inn keeper and she explained it was a late check-in. EVERY noise from their walking, unpacking, opening of drawers, and flushing of the toilet was magnified and transferred directly down into our room. We asked to be moved to another room but the innkeeper stated it was not possible. The innkeeper said the noise would quiet down when the new arrivals went to bed. (Very consoling at 1:15 AM!). At breakfast the next morning there was another apology for the inconvenience, but no offer of an adjustment on our bill. If you are planning a special, and expensive, occasion at the 1708 House, I recommend a room on the second floor only. This was a very unpleasant stay and we are very disappointed that innkeepers of this caliber of a Bed & Breakfast have not reached out to compensate us in any way. I can only suggest they try sleeping in Room #5 one evening themselves!

Travelled with a friend to Southampton for an Art Opening. Chose this hotel based in large part on the location... very near the Gallery. However when we checked in and every need was met and detail was attended to. The manager there now is fabulous... very accommodating, pleasant and well organized. I will go back there in a heart beat!

We did not feel particularly welcome as we arrived after a long drive from Maplewood NJ when one of the owners (I believe) rudely interupted the member of staff that was checking us in with a request that she telephone restaurant X to make a booking for a different set of guests. Fortunately the next day we met a further female member of staff who was very friendly and helpful.

We stayed in room 5 on the ground floor (or first floor if you are American) and the only complaint we had was that the thick, wooden blinds at the windows provided doubtful privacy in both the main bedroom and the bathroom. In the latter the glass was not frosted so you might need to rely on the glass misting up (or shower in the dark)! The windows faced the main driveway from the road to the guest car park.

Breakfasts were substantial and offered a good variety. The open kitchen (subject to a service charge of 5% on your final bill) was a great touch once we got over our English reserve of going to help ourselves to drinks and snacks.

The other owner of 1708 (Skip I believe) provided interesting conversation at breakfast time on our last morning, really testing my knowledge of the US and UK political systems. This might not be to everyone's taste at breakfast time but I enjoyed it.

The location in Southampton is very central, but we laughed when we noticed that the website says that it is next door to Saks of Fifth Avenue, but does not mention that it is opposite CVS.

Finally, make sure you take a look downstairs in the wine cellar - a great feature.
