“Time for a renovation”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2013

We booked 2 nights at the Pridwin for a girls weekend to get away from NYC. Booking of the hotel is done via the phone & when we booked we informed them we'd be traveling after work on the Friday night, however this was not written down on our booking as when we came to check in at 10.30pm, my friends who checked us in (I waited outside with the car) were told the hotel assumed we weren't coming & would of given our rooms away has people arrived looking for a room. Add to this it took the hotel over 20mins to check us in & they were quite abrupt with my friends because check in should of been closed (in their eyes).

The lobby is decorated in an old style Hampton/beach style which is really nice, however the rooms are looking tired & in need of renovation with dated sheets, furniture etc. that said, the bed was very comfy. also, when you're paying $370 a night for a room you'd expect glasses, bottle opener, mini fridge in room. We'd brought some beverages & had to go down to the bar & ask for bottle opener to take to room, open bottle then bring back down because they only had the 1 opener.

Breakfast is decent, the water activities are great fun & we spent our whole time on the beach to keep away from the hoards of kids & as we enjoyed the sound of the waves.

Overall whilst the trip was enjoyable there are 2 issues with the hotel that would make me second guess to stay again:
1) the staff are mainly college kids, and part of me thinks that's great because I also had a job like that at college over the summer (years ago), the attention to detail of said college kids was not that great. Classic case in point - on the Saturday afternoon we went to reception & asked if we could get a late checkout on the Sunday. We had the ring the bell several times & saw through the window several staff hanging around chatting. One young man came out, looked up our booking, said no problem & quickly disappeared. I noticed he never wrote anything down so on the Sunday morning on our way to breakfast we doubled checked and were told no such request had been put onto our booking. Lucky for us we did check & confirm.
2) the Saturday night there was a private function taking up the whole restaurant & bar resulting in them being shut. Signs for this event only went up late afternoon informing guests & we were never told at check in we'd need to find alternative dining. We'd initially planned to eat in hotel so we could drink & not have to drive (because hotel is quite remote) however we'd come across the sunset beach restaurant 15min walk away & had decided to eat there. Other guests clearly had planned to eat at hotel & when we were going to dinner we saw some very heated arguments between guests & the staff.

Overall the hotel is fine for a weekend getaway however the rooms need some TLC & the staff need to be more on the ball when it comes to customer service.

Thank you for sharing your honest feedback. While we are glad to hear that your overall trip was enjoyable, we are sincerely sorry to hear that your stay at the Pridwin did not meet your expectations. To address some of the issues brought up in your review, while we have been actively renovating the hotel, we do acknowledge that we are a more classic, family-style resort, originally built in the 1920s and therefore, we may not offer the more modern amenities that some guest may expect. While we do occasionally host large parties at our hotel, we do try to give our guests advance warning when they are booking at one of these times, and we do apologize that this notification seems not to have happened before your stay. We attempt to maintain a balance of energy aiming to favor mellow over excited, but the Pridwin is very popular with families, many of whom return year after year to enjoy our grounds and many sporting and recreational activities. We do try to provide welcoming and responsive customer service for all of our guests, and rest assured that your check-in and check-out experiences were not indicative of our normal high standards. If you are open to visiting us again, we will look forward to the opportunity to welcome you back and make up for the challenges you faced during your most recent visit.

We stayed at the Pridwin for one night for a very last minute getaway. The hotel is in a great location and the lobby and restaurant area are very nice. The staff were friendly and accommodating. Even the teenagers working during breakfast were so polite and helpful! We rented 2 bikes from the hotel for a few hours for a total of $30 which was very reasonable. The breakfast was standard fare and pretty good. My only complaint would be that the hotel smells and feels very musty and outdated. This might just come with the territory of a hotel on an island.

Leandra, thanks for taking the time to write a review of the Pridwin! We're glad to hear that you enjoyed the attentive and welcoming service, our tasty breakfast, and our sporting amenities during your stay. We are in the process of updating and renovating some portions of the hotel, but unfortunately, our beautiful (though humid) environment does encourage the smell you mentioned. Rest assured, our top-notch housekeeping team makes sure everything is clean and sanitary for our valued guests. We appreciate your feedback, and we certainly hope to welcome you back to the Pridwin for another summertime getaway soon!

This place is like a slice of heaven. I have come to visit twice now, and both times have been equally amazing and special. The hotel is beautiful, comfortable, and maintains its original charm. The staff is always very helpful and probably the nicest people you'll ever meet working in the hospitality industry. Food is fresh and delicious and so are the drinks! Fun for adults, kids & baby, or romantic weekend getaway with your special someone. Steal magnificent sunrises and sunsets from the front porch lawn area, or down on the dock. You will die happy.

Room Tip: ask for a cottage

I love Shelter Island anyway, and the Pridwin didn't disappoint. Great location, pool, cocktails, room and charming team who were always friendly and unruffled, ever welcoming. I had a small room in the main hotel this time (which was fine and had a great sea/bay view. I shall be back and look forward to booking a cabin with the family next time. I can't remember what I had for dinner - it was that kind of weekend, but no complaints anyway!

Gorgeous views, great access to the hotels private beach and the public beach down the road, excellent cocktails and food as well. Very relaxing atmosphere and a nice place to unwind. I have been going every summer for 3 years and plan to do so forever!

Borrow a bike from the hotel and ride to Shell Beach (a few miles) for the best "private" beach ever. Guaranteed to never see another soul, at least during the week.

Room Tip: Ask for a beach view room if possible, especially the ones on the corners - excellent sunsets.

We stayed there from a Sunday until Tuesday. The rooms were clean, the staff was super-friendly and it was located in the perfect spot: Across the street from the beach and in walking distance from a great restaurant. The food at the Pridwin was very good...not "gourmet meal" good, but still excellent. Also, the pool was a good size, clean and easy to get to.

We stayed via a Living Social deal and if I ever see another one for the Pridwin, I'll definitely buy it!

Room Tip: All of their rooms seemed nice, but we stayed on the 3rd floor, which had a great view of the water...
