“Owners vs. Guests”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2012 via mobile

To begin, we had a wonderful time on Shelter Island, and Dering Harbor in particular. Born and raised on the west coast we had certain assumptions about Long Island beach life that were quickly troubled upon our arrrival at the Dering Harbor Inn. To call what is essentially a cooperative of individually owned condos an Inn is a bit misleading, but the place is pleasant enough, somewhat reminiscent of childhood trips to Ocean Shores in Washington State, and the views are world class. The pool is a nice compliment to what is a very calming environment. If you want/need to escape city life with a young family or as a couple this is the place. That said, this place is quiet, very quiet, retirement community quiet, and the cool glances from the very quiet folks sitting around the pool create a strange vibe in what is otherwise a very contemplative and soothing physical environment. The strange vibe we had been sensing made sense after the very nice guy wathcing over the pool disclosed that some of the "owners" are a bit grumpy around the guests. His insight came after we were yelled at by an "owner" for disrupting the peace around the pool. We being my 7 year old son, a small ball, and a peaceful, yet occasionally sprirted game of catch. In short, we had a very nice time at a very nice place that will eventually need to reconcile the owner vs. guest issue. Until then I'm not sure we would return, particularly at the rates they're asking for average accomodations. But the views! The views!

We did our research online and asked some friends who had been to the island before. This seemd like the best option since they also had 2-bedroom studioos available. We had studio nr 6, which is brand new. Nice modern look and feel, and very complete inventory everything you will need in the kitchen and more. Large fridge with icemaker, nice veranda. The kids loved the pooll grounds are beatifully maintained. And what a view...we saw several sunsets ( see attached) the one even more beatiful than the other. Staff id very helpful, providing maps and advice. We will definitively come back sometime. For the runners: a very nice 10km run is 4x around dering harbor village, following the costline.

Room Tip: Take one of the waterfront or waterview appartments or rooms

Stayed for one night at the end of July. We were in a one bedroom water view. Room was outdated but clean. The view was amazing. Pool clean. Traveled the island and this seemed like the inn with the best view. It's a bit pricey. We also ate breakfast at the islander which was delicious. And dinner at the vine cafe. Vine cafe expensive but food was really good. We had the pasta bolgonese and shell steak. There is not much to do on the island. Very quiet and town is small, not many shops.

we took a midweek trip to SI and stayed here. first Sherry is so welcoming and helpful. we stayed in # 17 a one bedroom. it's very large and had everthing we needed. the terrace was great. the pool is good just wish a few more umbrellas wre available. you can walk to town from here but remember there are limited sidewalks. this is a definite spot to return to.

Room Tip: the photos on site are accurate. studios do not have kitchens

The reasons I highly recommend Dering Harbor:

1) extremely clean and comfortable rooms - we had an outdoor porch with a gorgeous view of the water

2) beautiful and well kept grounds - pristine pool, beautiful lawns and hydrangea bushes everywhere

3) knowledgable and friendly hotel staff (particularly Sherry and Barbara) who went ABOVE and BEYOND to make my friends and I have a pleasant stay

4) affordable rates, especially compared with other places on the island

We loved our short visit at the DH this weekend and I would love to go back very soon. I loved the hotel even more after going to lunch at another nearby hotel where the environment was uptight and "New York"-ish. I left the city to escape that attitude for a weekend! Run don't walk to the Dering Harbor Hotel!

We rented a cozy one bedroom with a magnificent harbor view from a bluff. These are privately owned and decorated by their owners. Nice size bedroom and bath. Cute kitchenette and living room. The back porch is where the views are. The grounds are beautiful and well manicured and the pool is in an idealic setting. Would definetly stay here again.
Very restful and quiet.

We had never been to Shelter Island before and Sherry (from Dering Harbor Inn) said we would wind up wishing we could stay longer. Well, she was so very right... We arrived Thursday and stayed for 2 nights. The short ferry ride over was fun and then to enter our waterview room was magnificient. The bedroom was very large as was the bathroom with two double sinks, the living room was so very cozy and the kitchenette was great for breakfasts and snacks at night. The view of the Harbor from our second floor porch was gorgeous with two rockers on it. Also, the grounds were very well kept and the adirondack chairs at the water's edge was just great. I can't say enough about how clean and more than we expected this was. Hopefully, we can get a few friends together and come back in October...Again thanks for everything!
