“Edgy bistro in sleepy village”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2013 via mobile

Bistro 204 offers very good selections of food, wine, and beer. Norm and Jim, chef/host, have figured out how to provide excellent quality in every one of the limited number of options in each category. Everything is fresh. Atmosphere is modern and unexpectedly avant in a village known more for quaint. Great contrast in setting and cuisine with other options in town. Worth a trip to Sharon Springs.

“DELICIOUS!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2013

We loved this hip bistro for lunch! We both had the amazing tomato soup with creme fraiche as our first course. We've never had tomato soup that delicious before! Then for lunch we had the roasted pear salad with blue cheese and the fried rice. Delicious - we'll be back!!!

“Mo dern”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 16, 2013

Love, Love this place. The entire experience is chic and cool and relaxing. It's atmosphere is clean and the menu is affordable and healthy and not so funky you cannot relate. The almond stuffed dates are to die for. Portions are perfect and service is spot on. Attention to detail on every note. We really needed this in our little artsy area. Hats off to the guys, we love it.

“A taste of Cool Food and Hot spot !!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2012

I was so impressed with 204 as I walked up the cool stairs and saw a a new everything in an obviously 19th century building. The deck was open and inviting and the as I walked in the Front door I saw the entire restaurant as wide open and inviting. There was the ultra cool lounge seating under the giant window and across from the watchful eye of Warhols Mona lisa over the bar. I then was seated and the beet salad was a meal in itself. then came the Schnitzel and it was out of this world. perfectly done in a pan fried way. The service was friendly and attentive and the price was affordable/ cheap !!!!! I want to go back again and again ........

“A melt-in-your-mouth explosion of taste, with a very happy ending”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2012

It must be a blessing and a curse to run a restaurant in as remote an area as Sharon Springs, NY. A curse in that there’s not much else around for miles, but a blessing because all of the local ingredients are the freshest and best imaginable. Utilizing those home-grown items from the surrounding farms is one of the key reasons for the flavorfully rich dishes at 204 Main Street Bar & Bistro.

While it’s a bit of a misnomer to call the establishment a bar, only to offer only wine and beer, that is the sole minor drawback of dining here – and to be honest, when the food is this good, one really has no need for anything more distracting than wine or beer.

Being that this is dairy country, the salads are each augmented by a substantial cheese component. In the one I chose, a poached pear was filled with the pungent power of blue cheese and walnuts - and this blue cheese is no joke (if you’re looking for something milder but just as rich, try the goat cheese salad). As for the crumbly blue stuff, a little goes a long way, but when reined in with the grounding nuttiness of the pear and walnuts, it provided a perfect Fall pairing that set the stage for one of the most delicious beef dishes I’ve ever had the privilege of eating.

This braised beef was so tender it almost melted in the mouth – forget cutting it with a fork – this could be cut with your tongue. Served with a succulent portion of broccoli rabe and some equally-sinful mashed potatoes, it was a dish of comfort food elevated to something much more elegant, given the delicate textures and nuanced flavors at work.

For dessert, a richly-set mound of flan, smothered in sweet sauce, ended the evening with a smooth, creamy finish. Talk about a happy ending. (The explosion of tastes and textural choices is matched by the modern-yet-retro twists on décor, and be sure to check out the whimsical curio cabinet in the restroom.)
