We stayed at the American Hotel for one night in December 08. We were up in Sharon Springs to visit family. We had driven by the property before, and thought it was a beautiful building. We were a little early to check in and the room was not quite finished yet, so we walked around the town for a few minutes. There is a very cute shop across the street from the hotel, with fun knicknacks.
We came back to the hotel and were shown our room (#4, upstairs), which was very nice. It was immaculate! The bathroom was much larger than I expected and was also spotless. There was a small flatscreen TV on the dresser facing the beds, and cable TV was available. I was pleasantly surprised with the hot water and the heat in the room - obviously December in upstate NY is very cold, and this is an older building, but each room has its own heat dial (which we didn't need to use because the temperature was perfect the way they had it). The hot water came right on as well, and they had luxurious Gilchrist and Soames toiletries! The beds were just a bit too hard for our taste, but we still slept pretty well. We always sleep with a sound machine, which we brought along, and we didn't hear any noise after we went to sleep (which is SO refreshing at a hotel - even the large modern hotels usually have some noise keeping us awake).
I agree with the other poster who said you didn't feel like you were intruding. The hotel is small enough to be personal but large enough to be incognito if you want. There is even a separate (locked, but you get the key) entrance that does not go through the lobby if you prefer that.
After checking in and hanging out for a little while, we left to go hang out with the folks. When we came back at around 9:30pm, the parking lot had 5 times as many cars, and there were lots of people in the dining room. You could tell that this was THE place to go to dinner on a Saturday night. We were upstairs but couldn't hear any noise from the dining room. We heard a little bit of noise at around 11, which may have woken us up if we were sleeping, but it was a one-time thing and we didn't hear any more noise after that.
The next morning, we woke up and went downstairs for breakfast. As we sat down, we saw them bring out someone else's food. It looked amazing!! We actually double checked with the waitress because we could not believe that all that yummy food was included in the room price - but it was! We both ordered the cinnamon-nutmeg french toast and got some bacon and eggs as well. I ordered my french toast with whipped cream and maple syrup (locally made), and it was absolutely delicious. I think it even had raisins in it, and I normally do not like raisins in my food, but it was incredible. The eggs tasted so fresh and the bacon was perfect. The coffee was strong like we like it, and you had endless refills. The service was great, the waitress was all by herself, but she still came by every 5 minutes to see if we needed anything.
After we checked out, I felt like I wanted to come back and spend a week there! It just felt so relaxing, and the area is so beaufitul. I really recommend this hotel and I'm sure we'll come back soon!
