“Don't be fooled, it's a dump!”

When you visit Cooperstown, NY and are looking for a hotel nearby that is reasonably priced, don't be fooled like we were and stay here! Yes, the per night room rate is a lot less then the other hotels, and anyone you speak to on the phone will tell you it is 15 minutes outside of Cooperstown but its not. This hotel is at least 35 minutes away and that’s going 60 on back roads over a mountain. It is an old motor in, renamed Budget, rooms are small and fairly clean but a/c units are dirty and don't cool well. Parking is a problem. There are 18 rooms and only room for 14 cars, if you park on the grass, expect a call at 10pm to move your car behind the building where you can't see it. My room had no chain locks on the door; the shower floor was cement with mold on the edges; and, what looked like permanent residents partying in the parking lot till midnight. Stay away from this one!!!!!!

“Absolutely terrible”

Probably worst lodging experience I've had. no AC in mid July, dirty, towels so old and worn they were useless. We paid for 3 nights, but didnt stay that long as the place was so uncomfortable; Manager gruff and not helpful.

I recommend avoiding no matter what. No one should associate this place with the graciousness and pleasantness of Cooperstown

“Not worth it”

I too had a terrible experience at the Budget Inn in Sharon Springs. First off my family (wife, 4yr old and 11 month old) had been traveling all day and accidentally arrived at the Oneonta Budget Inn instead of the Sharon Springs Budget Inn. We called the SS Budget Inn to see if we could cancel and stay at the Oneonta Budget Inn. SS Budget Inn was another hours drive to the other side of Cooperstown. The man on the phone said he couldn't cancel the rooms and would charge me in full (3 nights @$90/night) unless he could sell the rooms. So, not wanting to lose the money, we loaded up and headed for Sharon Springs.

Upon arriving, the man behind the desk signed us in and immediately charged my credit card. Most hotels i've stayed at wait until your stay is complete to charge your credit card. I thought oh well at this point just give me a bed to sleep in. We went to our room and checked it out. The room smelled very bad. With a 4 month pregnant wife staying in this room was not an option. I went back to the office to tell the man behind the desk that we needed to cancel because my wife can't handle the smell. He said lets try another room. We did and it smelled also. He claimed it did not smell and would not let us out of the room. He said by turning the ac on for awhile the smell will go away. ooops i thought the room didn't smell.

After several minutes of arguing back and forth about the smells of the rooms, cancellation policies, etc, I asked for the manager. His reply, "I just work here".

I asked "Are you the manager or owner?" Once again "I just work here" Moments later he revealed he was the manager.

I asked if this was part of a chain... once again I got "I don't know, I just work here"

He tried every tactic in the book and would not cancel the reservations. I had enough and had my credit card company cancel the charges.

We then ventured to the Holiday Inn Express in Cooperstown. After telling Mike, the on shift manager, my dilemna, he knew which motel I was talking about. It wasn't the first time he's heard of bad experiences with Mr. I just work here. They had one room but was more than I wanted to spend. Mike asked "Can I call some other places to see if they will work for you". Mike called 3 hotels and finally helped make arrangements for our family to stay right in town.

I recommend driving past this dump and shiester, manager, guy that just works here, or whatever he is. I'd be ashamed to have his business in my community.

If you're looking to stay in or nearby cooperstown, there are a lot of people who rent out a unit of their house. We stayed at the Moxhams and it was clean, affordable, and right in Cooperstown.

“Low-budget lodgings, not $$”

Budget Inn

I cannot say enough about how wonderful the experience was in Cooperstown and at the hall of Fame. We went during induction weekend , so I expected accommodations to be a little tough to come by and expected to pay a premium. However, the Budget Inn at Sharon Springs (about 20 miles from Cooperstown) was a major-league rip-off. We were charged $550 (3 night minimum) for a single room (2 beds). The towels were threadbare, the carpet stained, the paint peeling in the shower. The TvVwas on its last legs, as was the in-room fridge (which we had not requested, but were told it was in the room at no additional charge." )The grounds had not been kept up at all. There was a sign on the Coke machine: "If this machine is out of order, soda is available at the front desk." But at the front desk, we were given directions to the market in town. To top it off, there was a sign in the room, warning that your license plate # will be given to the police if any items were missing from the room. Believe me, there was nothing you'd want to steal. Stay away!
