We had a truly magical stay over Christmas weekend. The lighthouse, built in the 1860's and renovated to it's former charming self in the 1980's, is a quaint, brick structure, furnished as it was in it's original time with antiques, coal burning stove, 1930's refrigerator, old gas stove/oven, claw-footed bathtub, etc...Upon arrival, be prepared for a 1/2 mile walk (with your belongings) to the lighthouse. We arrived just before high tide and Patrick met us part way down the path with rubber boots, a welcome sight as the tide was 1 foot higher than normal. We stayed in the West room, smaller then the East room but we felt is more welcoming with 2 windows facing the mountains of the Catskills and the other 2 looking south down the Hudson River. The bed was very comfortable and warm (heavy goose down comforter), but it was a double bed (no queen or king size beds in the 'olden days!).
The downstairs bathroom (shared) is a lesson in humility. Due to it's location (i.e. no city sewers), it utilizes a composting toilet. Thankfully, the compost is not directly under the toilet, but there is still somewhat of an odor and utilizing the spray wand to "flush" is definitely not something I would want to do in my everyday life. I found the odor to be contained with the toilet seat closed and the bathroom door shut. Water is provided from a sistern, and we found the water to be plentiful and hot. Electricity is provided by 1 very fragile line from the mainland, so blow dryers are not permitted.
We were able to barbecue outside on the gas grill (yes, barbecuing in December, "thanks" to global warming) and use the kitchen facilities (fully stocked) for cooking the rest of our dinner. We also were allowed to store our food in the refrigerator. We basically didn't wish to leave the island during our 2 day stay and being able to cook our own meals was just great.
Patrick's hospitality was just perfect. He is very pleasant, knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. Just the perfect inn (er....I mean lighthouse) keeper! And his breakfast's every morning were hearty and yummy! He was there when you needed him and "quietly disappeared" when you wished for private time.
We warmed up to the glowing coal stove in the living room after dinner, sipping a nice bottle of wine. Watched the sun come up over the Hudson from our bed. Watched the fog roll down the Hudson. Watched the Chickadee and his friend the Tufted Titmouse gobble up the seeds from the bird feeder. Watched the tides roll in and out. Picked out constellations in the clear, star-filled night sky. Drank more wine. Lot's of photographs. Read, talked, watched in silence. Drank more wine!
The lighthouse is 1.5 miles from downtown Saugerties and Patrick is full of recommendations as to places to eat and attractions to visit. Having visited the area many times we really just wanted to rest and relax.
We will definitely return, most likely in winter as it can be a little busy on the lighthouse island in the summer (the island is open to everyone). I would definitely recommend going with another couple so you can have the "whole place" to yourself. Our fellow guests were very nice, but I always have problems conversing first thing in the a.m. over breakfast with strangers.
Highly recommended, you will not be sorry!!
