My wife and I were celebrating our 16th wedding anniversary, but we wanted to stay local this year. I told my wife I wanted to be surprised so I had absolutely no idea where we were going. When she told me to drive to Saugerties, I thought 'Saugerties'? I had never seen nor heard of the Renwick Clifton House B&B, but I was pleasantly surprised when we got there. The house, dating from 1812, has been exquisitely restored. Whether the furnishings are antique or reproductions, you cannot help but be wowed by the look of this house. As a continuing student of history, I was fascinated and amazed by this house. We stayed in the Mary Powell room which had an expansive view of the 5 acres of land and the Hudson beyond. The room was spotless, comfy and elegantly done. The bath has the modern touches of a hot tub and a double shower while the bedroom has antique furniture, including a big, comfortable bed. (Rather than being snobbish about the size of the room, we realize this is an old house and not a hotel.) There was wine and cheese in the afternoon (we weren't here for dinner) and breakfast in the morning, which was quite memorable (scones, strawberries, and eggs Benedict with salmon). In the Spring and Summer, you can have breakfast on the back porch, or sit and sip a glass of wine. The difference between 'good' and 'great' is the attention to detail and the owners have gotten it right. They were welcoming, warm and friendly and very knowledgeable about the house and the Saugerties area. This is a definite 'recommend' to all my friends and family. I look forward to returning here when it is warmer to take advantage of that porch.
