“Elegant and cozy!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 12, 2014

We stayed at this hotel for two nights and loved it. They gave us a awesome king room at good rate because we went on an off season and not too many people were staying at the hotel. The room was spacious and clean. The staff was very friendly. The bar area was always lively and comfortable! The food at the restaurant was also great! The hotel is located on Main Street next to many shops and restaurants. We went during the winter time so it wasn't so crowded which is fine by me. I would definitely go back!

Was there for Christmas Day Dinner 2013...$85pp. With reservations required you would think they would not run out of food. 2 at our table had to change their orders and the patron at the next table asked the waiter "If you're out of food why did I drive here from Southampton?"...this was at 6:30, Portions were unbelievably small and nothing to merit anything out of the ordinary. Glad I wasn't paying for the dinner but felt sorry for my friend who did,,,total rip off.

The American Hotel never disappoints! The location is excellent - right on the main street of quaint Sag Harbor, near restaurants, shops and the harbor itself. The rooms are well-appointed, spacious and comfortable. Hotel guests enjoy an ample breakfast buffet and can also order off the menu, and the dining room is quiet and private. Service is friendly and excellent. We didn't dine at the restaurant this time, but I have in the past; the bar, while small, is lively and comfortable, and the restaurant is gourmet and 5-star. I have been to the hotel numerous times and it will always be one of my favorites, anywhere.

Room Tip: The room with the Hydrangea wallpaper is lovely (street-facing room, might be #12).

We had such a great weekend at this hotel! From the moment we called to book, Dawn was awesome! She was enthusiastic about us staying with them and hooked us up with the Suite.

The hotel…very clean. The bed was super comfortable, we usually travel with our own pillows but I used theirs because they were so cozy. The bathroom was awesome; marble, and all the amenities. The tub was great, could fit two people and the washroom was also equipped with a steam shower. There was a kitchen area, which we didn't use but looked like it was equipped with everything; stove, refrigerator, coffee maker, breakfast table etc. Also, there was a separate room with a pool table and radio system for entertainment. An added bonus for readers is there are books everywhere!

The restaurant….amazing, honestly one of the best meals that I have ever had. From the salads, to the oysters, our main entrees and dessert! Everything was fresh, seasoned beautifully and just plain fabulous. I had the scallops risotto, and my wife enjoyed the special of the evening which was halibut. We told the waiter that it was our anniversary and he gave us complimentary champagne. We also had breakfast there in the morning and it was great.

The staff….truly awesome! Dawn was very helpful for our entire stay, the bartender Paul was funny and also helpful, and our waiter Lorenzo I just adored. He gave us suggestions of places to visit being it was our first time in Sag Harbor. Everyone was so generous and courteous, they made the stay amazing.

Room Tip: Get the suite!

This wonderfully located, beautifully restored hotel is best viewed from outside. The rooms are small and full of ambient noise when the restaurant is busy; the staff acts as if it's doing you a favor. Best for movie stars, hedge fund managers and other tragically hip neurotics. If you're none of those, give it a miss. Just another reason why God created the North Fork, as a refuge.

Room Tip: Go to another hotel.

Ok, this is not the best, most luxurious place I ever stayed in, but:
- the staff is incredibly friendly and nice,
- the restaurant is really quite good (french cuisine with an american twist),
- the location is perfect,
- breakfast on the terrace on the morning of a sunny day is out of this world,
- the building is VERY romantic,
What else do you want?
Of course, apart from the above, its a little on the expensive side, the cancellation conditions are punitive, there is no room service, and the place looks more like a countryside b&b than an expensive hampton hotel, but hey, you're in the hamptons and you're about to have a great day...

We had the nicest room there.
The staff were extremely warm and welcoming.
The restaurant was outstanding: food, ambiance, service.

Located in town of Sag Harbor itself;
Waterfront and shops just short walk up the street.

Everything was fine...the details: sheets, silverware, bathroom fixtures, NY Times outside door in am, etc...

Excellent stay & would love to return.

Room Tip: The corner rm upstairs with the high ceiling was the BEST rm in the place (#11?)
