A recent entry to the Rochester dining scene, Furoshiki establishes itself as one of the better Asian noodle dining options here. This was our first visit, hastened somewhat by the Groupon that appeared the same day I said, "Hey, let's try the new ramen shop."
This is a small venue with both bar and dining areas sharing the space. It is reminiscent of what you'd find in many neighborhood bistros in Japan. We lived in Japan for nearly 10 years and ramen became regular fare for us, both for a quick lunch as well as for a nice casual dinner. The only drawback here is the din of neighboring conversations was a bit too loud.
We started with a wakame appetizer and warm sake then moved on to bowls of ramen with chicken and a miso ramen. We elected the optional spice ball to take the edge off the really cold weather that evening. Both selections were tasty and satisfying. The miso flavor was milder than expected, but passable with the spice ball kicker.
The wait staff were friendly and attentive at a comfortable level to keep things moving without feeling rushed.
I hope the management there will consider taking measures to dampen the noise to something more pleasant, but either way, I can see us returning to try one of the other ramen variations and various dishes. Did I mention, they have a wide selection of sake which, by itself, warrants another visit.
Oh yeah, they didn't say it was OK to slurp your noodles, but doing so is a compliment in Japan so I hope they interpreted my behavior that way.
