“Reworked Expanded and Restored”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2012

This theater was too big - almost 3,000 seats, and somewhat sound deadening prior to it extensive makeover a few years ago. I have been told George Eastman didn't like bright sounds. The former music director likened it to a closet stuffed with coats. The renovated hall is now smaller by over five hundred seats, and has much brighter sound, making for an improved experience. The hall is mainly used by the RPO, which is a much better orchestra than one would expect for a city the size of Rochester. It is good enough to attract first tier soloists like Ashkenazy and Josh Bell. The new music director is off to a great start.

There are many free and low cost concerts at this venue offered by the Eastman School of Music - one of the nations best music schools. I especially enjoy the opera they put on twice a year. There are two smaller theaters on either side of the hall for chamber music. The Ying Quartet is world clas..

“Amazing Place!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2012

This large performance hall associated with the University of Rochester's Eastman School of Music is nearly a hundred years old. But restorations over the past few years have only enhanced its grandeur and beauty, while making it a more functional concert hall. It is truly a pleasure to experience a musical event here, no matter what your musical taste. Much of the year the theatre is the home of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the best second-tier orchestras in America. They play both classical concerts as well as pops concerts, and even special events for kids. Often times there are world renowned soloists or special concerts. The ESM uses the hall for performances by its larger ensembles, often times for free. For one week in June the Eastman becomes the home of the premier guests at the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival, which was the last time we were in there. Do not miss this venue if you are visiting Rochester!
