This theater was too big - almost 3,000 seats, and somewhat sound deadening prior to it extensive makeover a few years ago. I have been told George Eastman didn't like bright sounds.The former music director likened it to a closet stuffed with coats. The renovated hall is now smaller by over five hundred seats, and has much brighter sound,making for an improved experience. The hall is mainly used by the RPO, which is a much better orchestra than one would expect for a city the size of Rochester. It is good enough to attract first tier soloists like Ashkenazy and Josh Bell. The new music director is off to a great start.
There are many free and low cost concerts at this venue offered by the Eastman School of Music - one of the nations best music schools. I especially enjoy the opera they put on twice a year.
