“Good Food, but Atmosphere Lacking”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2014

My husband and I had dinner at Calico on a recent trip to Rhinebeck. The staff was extremely friendly and attentive. The food was delicious. The only thing we were a bit disappointed in was the atmosphere. The tables were candlelit, but even a tablecloth would have helped take the edge off of nothing but hard surfaces. There was nothing "cozy" about this restaurant. We also sat at the table by the pastry case. Couples come to the case to choose their dessert. This felt a little close. Upon returning to Rhinebeck, with so many good restaurants in town, we would probably check out others before returning to Calico for a romantic dinner.

“Calico Regulars”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2014

If you have been here, I am sure you will agree. If not, you are missing out on the best dining experience in the area. Granted, the staff could start preparing our meals as soon as we walk in the door, but we do occasionally try the specials or something different. Seating is limited, so reservations are strongly suggested. You will be greeted by one of the owners (who will later ensure that your expectations have been exceeded). The wait staff will anticipate your every need. The cost will be surprisingly low considering what you get. Save room for one of the desserts - the display case is also the menu. If you cannot easily decide (and this is likely), have one there and take one home.

“The Jewel in the Crown”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 22, 2014

Just came home from another outstanding dinner at Calico's and felt compelled to support the excellent experience we had. We have owned a weekend home in the area for about 10 years and have enjoyed dining in Rhinebeck, given the abundance of excellent restaurants in the area that can rival some of the top Manhattan restaurants in quality, without the pretense and the astronomical prices. There are many graduates of the CIA who have fallen in love with the Hudson Valley, given its superb locally grown produce and farm raised livestock. With a huge competition of culinary talent in the area, Calico deserves to be at the top of the list for a multitude of reasons - exquisite food, friendly and knowledgeable service, and a warm and inviting laid back dining atmosphere. Tonight we sat at a cozy window table with the warm glow of candlelight as we looked out onto the snow outside. Calico is a small intimate dining space with red paneling and lovely local paintings on the walls. The restaurant seats maybe 20-25 people, so make your reservations early if you want to get one on a Friday or Saturday night. Three walk-in parties were turned away because there were no tables available!
Our welcoming waiter, Anthony, remembered us from our previous visit in the late fall. There was a good wine list and my husband and I had no problems selecting a delicious entree. I ordered the Bouillabaisse and he went for the chicken breast with pesto sauce. They were both superb; perfectly prepared and beautiful to behold. Accompanying our meals were a fresh salad with mixed greens and a choice of dressings(Go with the creamy honey scallion, Anthony's favorite!); acorn squash, and scalloped potatoes, all perfectly prepared. We couldn't pass up dessert selected from the pastry case - one of a dozen offerings - so hard to choose - one better than the next. We decided to share the petite home-baked razz cake - white cake with raspberry moose dipped in chocolate ganache.Thank goodness we were able to scoop up the last one - total Nirvana! To top it off, heavenly cappucinos. As is typical at the end of the meal, Leslie, the chef/owner, came by to chat with us. It was like spending a romantic night in a quaint little 19th century West Village neighborhood gem, without the hassles of finding a parking space and then trying to hear your partner over the din of an overcrowed room. Let all of your senses enjoy the experience at Calico's!

“Best Restaurant in Rhinebeck”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 16, 2014

As native Rhinebeckers, we love Calico. Food is consistantly wonderful, they have a terrific wine selection, and wait staff is paying attention to your needs. Small place, but nice ambiance and so worth the visit. Make sure you check out the unique salt and pepper shakers on each table. I am a salad fanatic and their salad is always fresh and the dressings are delicious. Nice selection on the menu. There is a case full of desserts baked on the premises and they are beautiful to look at. Also a good place to go for just coffee and the lovely desserts if you aren't looking for lunch or dinner.

“Great owners great food!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2014

Drove up to Rhinebeck from lower Westchester to visit friends. They took us to their favorite place, Calico.
We were welcomed as we entered, seated and a beautiful evening followed. I had the rack of lamb perfectly cooked, the other dishes were duck in a berry sauce, flank steak, and a pesto scallop and shrimp over angle hair pasta. I samples everything and each dish was flavorful and perfectly seasoned. They also have good, well priced wine list but then came the deserts. Leslie the owner/ pastry chef came and explained her creations. Absolutely delicious. I highly recommend this place. Space seats about 20 so do get reservations.
