“A gem in the area”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2013

The food here for this area is one of the best. We had the pub food, but the restaurant menu is also broad and ample. The Beet Salad was excellent and portions adequate. Salads run about $7 and entrees $15-25 each. Ambiance even in the restaurant portion is more pub-like and can be noisy. Service was good but not great toward the end of the evening, as the restaurant had filled up. Worth the trip/stop-over.

“Great Mom's Day Brunch”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 12, 2013

Quaint, simple atmosphere and delicious, locally sourced food. We've been here before but not in a while but will be making this a more regular eatery. Highly recommended!

“What more could you ask?”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 30, 2013 via mobile

Four excellent dinners for $83 including tax and a Corona. No Sam Adams. Just the place for really good food and service. Historic hamlet and the venue and ambience fit right in.

“Never Disappoints”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 22, 2013

This place is a true community treasure. The dedicated staff really take pride in every aspect of the restaurant. If they have corned beef hash when you visit, don't even think of missing it.

“A great surprise for this first-time visitor to Rensselaerville”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2013

Fantastic food, a warm atmosphere and great service make the Palmer House, located in a quiet town set in the Catskills, something of a hidden gem. We sat in the tavern, in the rear of the restaurant, which was lively but not overwhelming, and enjoyed an excellent meal.

The restaurant staff is very knowledgeable about the selection of local draft beers, and the dessert selection (all of which are made in-house by their pastry chef) is very impressive. The dinner menu -- while somewhat limited in terms of selection -- provides a nice balance of variety. The portions (including the salads) are large as well, so be prepared to eat.

My recommendations for this visit: the savoy cabbage salad, served warm with a generous amount of local pancetta, a dijon dressing that was lighter than one might think, and just the right amount of gorgonzola (not overwhelming at all, but a nice complement to the bite of the cabbage). This salad is almost big enough to be an entree, so considering sharing it with your dinner mate (I wasn't able to finish it).

For my entree, I had the blackened red snapper, served atop creamed corn and sauteed vegetables. The fish was fresh with a good flavor, though it seemed the kitchen was careful not to over-season the snapper, and the vegetables were tasty. The creamed corn was an unexpected side dish with this particular meal, but added a nice taste and texture served alongside the fish.

The menu prices were a bit surprising, given the Palmer House's out-of-the-way location, but the quality and portion size created an excellent value overall.
