Tail O' The Pup is a roxkin', laid-back and TOTALLY cool place to go for an outdoor lobster (or other) BBQ feast! Located in Ray Brook, NY, which is halfway between Lake Placid and Saranac Lake, this place combines outdoor fun and great food with smokey BBQ pits and live blues music. There's even a playground for the kids!
The menu gives you a choice of almost anything that comes off a BBQ grill, but most of the people around us (including us) were there for the lobster. The are very, very good, although (in my opinion) they are a bit on the small side. The restaurant does all the shell splitting for you, so most of the hard work is done. However, my lobster tail was a "four bite" affair, so I'm not 100% sure about the 1 1/4 pound detail, but I guess it's OK, as they do give you a lot of other things to eat. There is also an option to get a 3 pound lobster, but it's very pricey.
The night we were there, the band was very good, and a large group of motorcyclists pulled in to enjoy the tunes too. (No, they weren't rowdy...they were all good folks, about the same age as us "seasoned citizens.") We sat out underneath the tents and enjoyed the fine weather as we consumed our food.
One other "down" point (besides the small lobster) was the number of items that they were out of. THey had run out of a number of menu entrees, as well as a LOT of the different drinks and beers. Seems like they'd be able to keep stuf like that in stock, especially considering the number of people they serve every night. But no worries, it was still fun.
I would gladly go back to Tail O' The Pup in the future, especially if they gave you a bit more lobster to eat (for which I would gladly pay the price). It is a fun place to get great food, which is a phenomenal combination!
