We had to evacute from the Battery Park area of Manhattan soon after the storm and we were
fortunate to get rooms close to JFK thru Bookings.com at HJI Queens village. Yes, the Hotel does need new interiors, rugs, furniture etc.. but under the circumstances (huricane sandy) the managment did a fine job to keep all functions & utilities going smoothly 24 hours through-out our stay. Kudos to the staff for services rendered during our stay.

I stayed here a few years ago and didn't have a problem. It wasn't fancy, but at least it was clean. I cannot say the same this time. I'm not sure what happened over the last few years, but this place has gone to the dogs.

I ordered a King room online and had to change rooms 4 times. The first room had soiled bedding and no working heat or air. The 2nd room reeked of cigarette smoke. The third room was a Queen (not what I ordered) with mold around the bathtub and crumbs all over the carpet. When I complained that this was a Queen and not a King, the clerk essentially shrugged his shoulders and said it's the same price anyway. While in the Queen room there was a large party of people yelling in the hallway at about 2:00 a.m. We called the front desk, but they didn't care.

The 4th and final room was a King, but part of the curtains were falling down. I had to wedge a towel between the wall to hold the curtains up so we could change out of the view of a busy street.

Lastly the replacement blanket the hotel provided us had a large cigarette burn hole.

Save yourself the trouble and spend $30-40 extra and stay at the Holiday Inn Express in Queens. I will NEVER stay in this hotel again. I recommend that you don't either.

Room Tip: Don't stay here.

This HoJo was my home for eight nights in New York. Bus and subway (unlimited week card for $29) gets you to Manhattan in about an hour, the much more expensive LIRR in about half an hour. Using the first option almost every day is quite a journey, be prepared. Queen's Village itself is a bit Western-like and residential, but with a few convenience stores nearby. Some people might feel that the area is somewhat intimidating at night, but I felt rather safe and had no unpleasant experiences at all.

Checking in and out is your standard procedure, and the staff friendly. This was however the first time I've seen a hotel reception behind a solid glass window.

The room was on the larger side, with a huge bed. A refridgerator was also provided. Storage space was however limited to a small cupboard, which shouldn't be necessary. The AC's temperature setting didn't help much, and was too effective – keeping in on before going to bed and then turning it off proved to be the best option.

What was quite annoying was a distinct smell in the room, which came from the bathroom – and most probably the shower curtain which looked unwashed since it was bought. Apart from that the room, furniture and the hotel itself could use some maintenance and was a bit worn.

Breakfast was about non-existant. Toast and cereal, bananas and jam added on some days, and that's it. About every other day the coffee was empty, and an enquiry was needed to have it refilled – but which then was done rather quickly. Providing such a breakfast, I think they should skip breakfast altogether or make it better and optional.

In total, New York hotels are expensive and this is a cheap option if you're prepared for it. Apart from some annoyances it is ok, although I would consider returning carefully.
