There are several things which make this Inn a distinctive pleasure. First is the certainty that Michael, the owner, loves his place. You can feel it. From the wall treatment to the unique breakfast servings to the artwork and furniture, he knows what he's doing. The person who said that the Copper Penny is run-down simply doesn't have a clue what he is talking about. There is TLC here from one end to the other. The dining room doesn't have prints on the wall...it has art. Second, Michael knows the town. We were able to plan our limited time in Poughkeepsie to perfection. We went to a suggested small restaurant nearby and had dishes that were unique, scrumptious, and reasonably priced. M. tuned into our needs, got us where we needed to go, and gave us brilliant directions through the city and up to Hyde Park and then back to CT. Thanks, Michael. There's more to say, but, simply put, we're sending our friends to the Copper Penny Inn.

The rooms are lovely, breakfast terrific, and service really sweet. My room was large with old hardwood floors and an amazing bathroom with a large stall shower and a great old bathtub. All the little touches were spot on. All of this was a bit surprising because, aside from the large copper penny hanging from the sign on the road, the building itself looked like little more than a nice, well-kept home. I wasn't even entirely sure I was in the right place once I drove in the driveway because there was no additional signage on the B&B. When I checked in, I was shown where the night snacks were: homemade oatmeal and chocolate chip cookies (way too good), apples, hot water and teas, cold filtered watwr in the fridge. The common areas are great too. I've stayed in a few other places in the area and this is the best by far.

While the staff is pleasant, the facilities are seedy: NO internet access on wireless network; heater in room unplugged with outlet not readily accessible; Rooms are up a steep flight of stairs; porcelain lamps and bath fixtures cracked; At $200/night plus tax this hotel should feature nice soap in the bath. Instead, only commercial liquid soap and shampoo dispenser is present, with thin, worn towels. The hotel is NOT within ready walking distance of Vassar as advertised (which I interpret as a ten minute walk or less)-- rather 25 minutes walking at least. Breakfast is not served until 08:30 AM. If you have a 09:00 appointment for a tour at Vassar you are out of luck. Overall for this price the experience at this hotel left much to be desired.

Room Tip: This hotel should be priced at about $60/night per room for value received. Anything more and you ar...

My daughter and I have stayed here twice. Michael, the owner, couldn't be nicer or more welcoming. Friendly and full of suggestions for restaurants and things to do. The terrific breakfast and pantry with homemade cookies and tea and coffee were enjoyed. His assistant is always a student from the Culinary Institute which is nearby. The Copper Penny is an older home (especially compared to places in California, where we are from) with gracious living room, dining room and fireplace downstairs. The rooms we stayed in are upstairs - clean, well appointed, if on the smaller side.

This was our third consecutive year going to this wonderful bed and breakfast for our anniversary. Each year tops the last. Michael is an extremely attentive and warm host. Each year we are greeted with the most delicious homemade cookies and gorgeous fire burning. Michael is eager to help us get settled in and makes excellent restaurant suggestions. Our room is full of antique charm and spotless. Over the three years we have stayed in two of the rooms available, both exceeded our expectations. Most impressive is the breakfast. Each morning we are excited to taste Michael's creations. Every meal has been nothing short of perfect! The German Fluff pancakes happen to be my favorite :)
We could not ask for anything more! Thank you Michael for helping to make our anniversary special!

My 94-year old father and I just spent two nights at the Copper Penny Inn as an alternative to staying in New York City. We took the train down the Hudson to the city instead. We thought everything at Copper Penny Inn was just great... from the morning mango-pinneapple fruit salad to the copper shower to the adept conversation of our host Michael. We highly recommend this well-situated bed and breakfast to all.

My husband and I had the pleasure of staying in the Penny Room at this wonderful B&B.
We were greeted by Michael, who helped with our luggage, advised us on restaurants and showed us our beautiful room. Copper sink and Copper shower in the bathroom and a most comfortable king size bed. The entire place was spotless and comfortable and most welcoming in every way. Breakfast was the most incredible experience. The resident innkeeper, Tatitana, was the sweetest person, a Culinary Institute Student, presented us with a special treat for breakfast each day. Gourmet is the word to describe the best breakfast we ever ate. Everything was homemade and included fruits and vegetables from the outside garden. Quiet, great location, awesome food all add up to a great place to stay. Perfection!!!!

Room Tip: All rooms are wonderful.
