We stayed here for 3 nights during Christmas week visiting our son and his family. So, we were off-season and enjoyed a very reasonable room rate. We were in the "G Building" which is across the street from the Main Hotel "campus". The room was clean and nicely furnished, plenty of towels etc. and very convenient to the village and our sons home. In reading reviews ahead of time I wasn't sure what to expect, but overall our experince was positive, and we'll certainly come stay there again.
So, let me offer some perspective on a few things that seemed to make other reviewers crazy.
Parking was available at no charge (off - season only) either next to/behind the G building, or across the street at the main hotel. But this is Port Jeff, so on-season expect to pay for parking. During the summer season valet parking is also available. Parking on the street during the on season is pretty much impossible. The lots are well lit, and safe. Not a big deal.
The restaurant breakfast buffet was fine, service was good, and the price ($14.95) seemed reasonable. We did not have lunch or dinner there, although the menu looked appealing and reasonable. Keep in mind that Port Jeff is 1) in New York, and 2) a huge tourist destination. So food and services will all be more expensive than your home town. At home (New Hampshire and Boston), we consider a reasonable dinner for two at a nice restaurant to be in the $125 - 150 range including drinks and/or wine. In Port Jeff the cost is more like $200 if you're at a decent sit-down restaurant. There are some small family restaurants in the area where you can eat far cheaper.
Service was generally good, everybody was polite and helpful and we were quite comfortable. Now, this is not the Ritz Carlton. Forget formal room service, there are no valets or bellhops and yes, you'll most likely be carrying your luggage to your room. The cups are plastic and aside from the G building there aren't any ice machines. Deal with it.
Generally the property seems in good repair. We had a loose shower door handle (so what?) but otherwise everything was fine. Our room had a small balcony, but no appreciable view. The only rooms with views are in the main building and the other buildings on their campus near the marina. But there is a parking lot between you and the marina except in the main building. If the "purity" of the view is important they have deluxe rooms available. But that all depends on how much time you spend in your room. We just sleep there.
Finally, the main hotel is in the middle of the village next to the marina and the ferry. So there's going to be noise all the time. On season expect it to be loud, especially above the bar or across from the marina. That's the sound of people of having fun, plan on dealing with it. The G building was actually very quiet, but again, we were off season.
Hopefully this sets some expectations for you. Enjoy your stay, it's a very nice property.
The G building is quiet, clean and very comfortable. The main hotel is the party place.
