“excellent motel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 9, 2013

I was delighted with the motel, the rooms were excellent.
Having been disappointed by another hotel I the area, tried this motel and was delighted.

Rene and all the staff were so friendly and welcoming.
They kept a lone Scotsman heading in the right direction by recommending places to see and to eat.
I recommend this motel to everyone, come and see for yourselves how a good motel should be.

After being rudely bounced due to staff screw-up at America's Best Value Inn - 2 weeks before college commencement! - I was lucky enough to find accommodations at Rip Van Winkle. The desk lady was attentive and courteous taking my name/number and calling back a few days later as promised if rooms opened up which they did. We had 2 rooms; an efficiency and regular both next to each other which was great. Had a nice talk with the owner who advised as funds permit, he continues in his progress for upgrades and renovations of all rooms. The efficiency was terrific! One of those recently remodeled, it was excellent. New laminate flooring, very clean, roomy, and more than comfortable. Slept 4 with one private bedroom and other bed in main living quarters. Large flat screen TV's in both rooms and full size kitchen; controlled heating made for a cozy stay on a cool night. Beds must've been fairly new and they were very comfortable and clean giving us a great night's sleep. Only suggestion for improvement would be addition of shelf in bathroom for room to store toiletries and hair appliances and some metal hooks on bath door, main area and bedroom to adequately hang coats and clothing. Maybe something that's already on the list of things to do. The room next door where my Mom stayed was one of the older rooms on the list for remodel but truly it was just fine the way it was. Spacious closet for hanging clothes, mini fridge, comfy beds and nice bathroom and above all - clean and comfortable. Staff was attentive and friendly. Also got a chance to view one of the 2 cabins on the property. Older, yes, but very cool with 2 bedrooms, full kitchen, and cute front porch, slept up to 8 people. The Rip is very convenient right off the highway, exit 39, with nice view across the street of park on Lake Champlain. Restaurant right next door with other fast food and gas places within short distance. A short 2.5 mile direct shot ride to the college campus. Pity I didn't discover this place earlier than my daughter's senior year. If you want to pay double or more for "pretty", go to the big hotels then, otherwise, you can't beat the Rip Van Winkle for affordability, comfort, and most important-cleanliness.

Room Tip: Room 113 (efficiency) was choice and 112 (regular) was great and quiet. Maybe stash one or two over...

I come up at least twice a year to go fishing, and there's no place I'd rather stay. the staff treat us like family, and the grounds are excellent if you're bringing a boat. my friends and I bass fish all over the country and everyone love staying at the Rip.

I stayed here as a get away for a few days. The staff was great and the rooms very clean looks like the property owner is still doing more upgrades. I have stayed here before and i have noticed the changes. The cost of the room is much better then other places near by. What i really liked is that all rooms are non smoking. I will stay there again and recommend this motel to anyone looking for a great price and clean room.

Room Tip: The rooms with kitchens are a great way to save money

Stayed at the Rip Van Winkle motel only because most other places were booked. The room was run down (large hair in the bed, candy wrapper on the carpet, bathroom dingy). From what I understand, the place gets some questionable characters as well. There were two positives to staying at the Rip Van Winkle Motel: the room had working air conditioning and the proprietor seemed like an okay guy. He at least allowed me to check out early without charging me when I changed my plans. But it was mostly a bad experience. When returning to my quarters at night at the Rip Van Winkle at nighttime, it was a little scary. I did not want to spend any lengthy period of time outside. I just preferred to get into my room and mind my business until it was time to check out the next morning.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else. You're better off.
