We visited the hotel with my son's early teen soccer team. After reading some last minute reviews of the property, we almost cancelled . However, we decided to give it a try and once settled in, our concerns dissipated.
No, it is not the Ritz Carlton. However, the property and rooms were VERY clean( my wife is a neat freak who checks behind the toilet and under the beds), the staff was great bordering on fantastic-especially for Metro New York- and the services were above average. We were in a non-smoking section and did not experience any of the smoke complaints of earlier reviewers. The noise wasn't nearly as bad as previously reviewed but our teams had a section of the hotel and we kept our charges in check.
We had a two double bed room which was the size that we expected. The television was an older model with a slightly fuzzy picture. However, as stated above, we were there for a soccer tournament and only used the television for a few minutes at a time.
No, the rooms do not have a window that provide an exterior view. This is a former motor hotel that was updated in 2001 at which time the exterior catwalks were enclosed to create interior hallways. However, the exterior windows in the hallway provide just enough morning light under the door and at the exterior edges of the room's window shades that we knew it was morning.
The bed was very firm. The bathroom, consisting of a toilet and shower in one room and the face bowl at the end of the bedroom, was small and would not accomodate a pro football lineman( they can afford the Ritz Carlton for a kids' soccer tournament). However, it is more than adequate for anyone smaller than 6'6" , 300 lbs(the ceiling in the bathroom area was lower than the bedroom). The shower/tub although small provided a superior shower and was immaculate in its cleanliness.
There were adequate vending and ice machines on each of the two floors which was important for the thirty or so families from our soccer program.
The restaurant was good. The Saturday menu breakfast was well done and the Sunday Breakfast Brunch had everything that you would expect, except no made to order omlets. The food was of very good quality and I heard no complaints.
The hotel exercise room consisted of the usual assortment of aerobic equipment and weight machines. Although I didn't have an opportunity to work out there, I did not notice any dumbells or free weights. However, there is a commercial gym facility within yards of the hotel. Also, the unheated outdoor pool was very clean.
The business center consisted of one terminal. Our kids dominated the room between games. So, I didn't have an opportunity to use the room.
In closing, this is a very good hotel for familes on a budget and a great hotel for sports teams looking for a place to stay while attending weekend tournaments on Long Island. The staff was very accomodating and the facility was clean.
