“Easter Dinner”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 14, 2013

For Easter weekend we reserved an early dinner at the Stissing House. We were seated in a more private side room based on the fact the tavern area was a bit loud. Being away from the main eating area didn't deter from our customer service experience or our wonderful meal. With the three of us we started with flashed fried mushrooms, the crab cakes and the charcuterie platter, all delicious and perfect portioned for an appetizer. For the meal we ordered a lamb burger, meat seasoned and cooked well(bun was much too large for the burger), french onion soup(broiled for too long, cheese was burnt), and the steak tartare which was delicious in its preparation. Nothing extraordinary about the dessert. For the price it is a bit more than other restaurants in the surrounding area, but for the menu items it is to be expected. I will be returning soon for lunch with the same people and I am sure I will enjoy myself as I had before.

“Never for food again”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 9, 2013

The only reason I'm even giving this place 2 stars is because in a pinch they are good for drinks. I went here a couple years ago, they sat me and my partner in what seemed like the red-headed step child room, although there was plenty of space in the main dining area. When i got my salad there was a long white elderly hair intertwined in between the lettuce leaves. I just about died. It belonged to the waitress serving us who was older.
They were offering a drink "special" that tasted horrible, i returned it sand a small sip, and I was still charged full price for the drink. Very greedy if you ask me.
We just recently visited last week June 6th, and had cocktails, and the barmaid was very nice, not slutty, which is refreshing. just a normal girl, however, the drinks were extravagantly expensive. The chef seemed drunk and speaking to an obnoxious group of people, one of which was a drunk female attention-seeker attempting to speak French. Slob crowd.
They won't see us there for a few more years, at least.

“ENJOYING THE STISSING HOUSE”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 17, 2012

Thoroughly enjoyed the Stissing House again, we seem to go at least twice a year. Picking up our Xmas tree @ the Big Rockfarm just down the road & shopping for art in Millerton from our artist friend Pam White in the summer/fall. Fabulous fresh oysters, french onion soup, pizza from the wood fired oven, great burger.Ambience to beat the band. Excellent friendly service, always a joy... We love this place. A great restaurant, party place, very warm & romantic. Highly recommend. Best, DLA

“Extremely Disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2012 via mobile

On a romantic weekend with my husband, who happens to be a chef, we were very excited to try Stissing House. When we arrived we were pleased with the warm ambience. The excitement ended there. From appetizer to dessert the food was awful. Everything was greasy and had no flavor. The duck was served skin down. Probably to hide the soggy duck skin. it was served in buerre blanc sauce which was basically creamy butter and was accompanied by frozen veg that was supposed to be farm fresh ratatouille. The pizza special looked like a tortilla wrap with melted cheese. This menu foes not resemble french food at all. I could go on an on but the only good thing besides the ambience was the wine!

“Quintessential Country Inn”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 17, 2012

A real weekend in the country awaits at the Stissing House, a two hundred year old charming restaurant in Pine Plains. The historic building luckily is in the capable hands of Michele and Patricia Jean. She has made a beautiful space of a grand main room and long bar with several intimate private rooms all furnished in country, Hollywood style like an old Cary Grant movie. Her French chef husband, formerly of New York's Provence, mans the wood fired kitchen where he excels with local meats and game, fresh, local vegetables and soothing food like choucroute, fresh trout with a caper butter sauce, steaks and burgers from local farmers, and pizzas, too, perfect with a Cotes de Rhone from the excellent wine list. Chic crowd of film people, hedge funders and polo players.
