I went to Joey's Pasta House on Friday 9/20/13 with 3 girlfriends. We try to get out for dinner and talking once a month or so. We made a reservation for 6:30. I read all the TA reviews and kept them in the back of my head.
We got there right at 6;30 and waited a few minutes for them to set up a table. We ended up upstairs, but were seated by about 6:38 or so. We were given menus, and told our waitress would be with us shortly. The waitress came by quickly and took our orders. The soup and salad came very quickly. We all had salads that were basic salads, nothing fancy, but they were good. One of us had the Lobster Bisque that is only served on Fridays and she said it was fantastic.
Many of the other reviews commented on how loud it was in the place. Especially upstairs. It was extremely loud. We were trying to talk and catch up, and while we managed, it was difficult. We all were very parched by having to shout at each other. We kept the water boy busy, filling up our glasses. They brought bread as soon as we sat down, but no butter. After the fact, I noticed there was an oil bottle for dipping, but they should still bring butter. Not everyone likes oil.
The dinners took quite a while. I really need to start wearing a watch when I go out to dinner, but from what I could see of my friends watch, it was at least 7:40 before our dinners arrived.
The food was very good however. One had the lobster ravioli. She said it was very good. After she had it, I told her one reviewer said it was very fishy smelling and she said it wasn't at all. Another one had the gnocchi, she said it was ok. I don't think she loved it. One had the eggplant parm and said it was very good. Hers seemed to be a huge portion. I had the vodka penne which was very good as well. I have only started ordering that out, so don't have much to compare it to. My friend loves it and usually orders it where ever she goes to find the best one and she said it was very good.
The place was also very warm. As we got up to leave, we could feel a rush of cool air, just next to us as we started to go down the stairs. And downstairs it was much cooler. I don't know how, but they should get some better circulation upstairs and some noise absorbers.
So would I go back? Probably, I would try it on a weeknight. Definitely don't go without a reservation and don't go if you are on a schedule. If you have show tickets or are on your way to a movie....don't attempt it. The food was good, portions were healthy. I brought enough home for dinner tonight!
